@@EricKarlAnderson Oh, yes, thats true, hadn't thought of that!
I don't read a lot of literary fiction, it's not really my genre, but every once in a while i like to pick one up. I've had my eye on Stone Blind and The Marriage Portrait. I got a lot of good suggestions from this video
Thank you for showing the covers. I only buy on kindle now as its cheaper, easier to house - we own a lot of books!- and also as i get older i cant hold big books in my arthritic hands!! So yes, i love me a gorgeous book cover. Interesting list. I don’t know what to make of it yet.
Really enjoyed Memphis and Copperhead. Plenty here I would be happy to explore.
Wandering souls is amazing and very emotional. Hope you enjoy it!

Oh and I ordered Trepasses too so I’m looking forward to reading that. I also want to read Demon Copperhead but I don’t have a copy yet. Yet. And I’ll probably have to buy whatever wins this and the Interntl Booker Prize as well. Now I’m going to see how many of these you’ve read & which were your favorites!
The way you describe books is honestly mesmerising, I just want to read them all! I think I’ll start with black butterflies, bandit queen, fire rush & wandering souls though. I want to read all of them for sure.
This is the first year I have already read a number of books on the list, and they are among my all time favorites. I ADORED The Bandit Queens and really hope it wins, but I am also especially eager to read Cursed Bread and The Dog of the North, which don't come out here in the US for a few weeks. This is such an interesting list and I am so excited to investigate all the titles that are new to me!!

I've read Demon Copperhead (5*), I'm A Fan (4*). Tresspasses (3-3.5*). I'm keen on The Dog of the North as I loved the Portable Veblen by McKenzie.
My book club has decided to read Demon Copperhead. You have sold The Dog of the North to me 😂

Your coverage is wonderful! I’ve read several of these but more will have to be added to my TBR. Thank you! What is less wonderful is that once again “women” only includes women writing within the narrow confines of literary fiction. Many of the more difficult and nuanced stories being told are by women writing scifi, fantasy, and even mystery. Where are the nominations for: Akata Woman, The Way Spring Arrives, Sea of Tranquility, The Candy House, The Final Strife, Prayer for the Crown Shy, Nettle and Bone, Siren Queen, Other Birds, Babel, and The Maid? None of the books nominated, including Demon Copperhead (which is fantastic) covers topics any more difficult, complex, or heartfelt than these books. None of the nominated books, including The Marriage Portrait, uses prose any more effectively than do these genre books. The difference is only genre. The so-called Women’s Prize is for women who write…certain kinds of books. For women writing in SFF or mystery or romance for that matter, those women are somehow less than. I have a hard time with the other big book prizes but the Women’s Prize? Shame on them. They should know better.
@EricKarlAnderson
Жыл бұрын
Thanks you! I hear your point and it'd be interesting if they nominated books in different genres. I assume this might be because publishers only submit a limited kind of book but that's probably because of what books have traditionally done well in the prize.
I'm excited about this list! I have not ready any of these yet, but several were already on my TBR. Others I had not heard of, so I'm excited to follow along.

I have read 4 of the longlist. Wandering Souls is the one I want to start with. Pod would have probably been the one I would have overlooked, but there were people mentioning how much they loved The Bees!! So it has made me rethink how quickly I will get to it. It’s a great longlist 📚❤️ Thank you for nattering about them Eric 😊

I am keen for Stone Blind and The Bandit Queens. I liked The Marriage Portrait but didn’t love it; I enjoyed the start but it petered out for me. And Demon Copperhead I have not read yet, it is my most anticipated book so I am saving it because I don’t want it to be over. I want to set aside time to savour it.

Hi Eric, I also agree that Kingsolver will win....I loved Marriage Portrait and Homesick and am now headed into the rest....Love your enthusiasm and I am sneaking all these in between War and Peace (my Jan/Feb read) and Brothers Karamozov (my March/April 2023 read) because I think it remains imperative to stay true to my classics and all they teach. Demon Copperhead was my Christmas week read and I wish I could go back and start it all over. Wondrous!

🤯 So many books that I’ve never heard of! I just went back and looked at the predictions you and Anna made. A lot of popular books weren’t included. Good news for me on some of them. I just received I’m A Fan in the mail yesterday and ordered Cursed Bread in the middle of watching Simon’s Women’s Prize longlist video today. I have Memphis and Trespasses on hold on audiobook at the library. And I have Stone Blind and the Marriage Portrait here ready to go also. Glory feels like this year’s No One is Talking About This to me. It just won’t go away. 😉😂 I have some research to do! Not sure what else I want to read. Definitely not the full list!
@EricKarlAnderson
Жыл бұрын
You’re well prepared to start! 📚And it’s true Glory keeps popping up but I think it deserves it. 😁
Natalie Haynes' Stone Blind was riveting. Her reading of the audiobook is fabulous. (It's horrifying when people blame victims!) I stopped 1/2 way through Demon Copperhead for a sort of 'cheat-sheet' viewing of several David Copperfield films (oldies through Dev Patel) then finished and enjoyed it even more. Cursed Bread soon to be released in US :^) Thanks, Eric.
As you mentioned some of these weren’t really on my radar of those Homesick as it sounds interesting and I like Crofts translations. I also enjoyed The Portable Veblen so I will read the Dog of The North. But I’ll kept the list handy as it sometimes takes me years to get to some
Hi Eric. Read Memphis late last year and liked it enormously as a familiar story well told; the neo- Orwellian novel, Glory is on my TBR list, I am hoping to also read along with Demon Copperhead as the premise of the novel fascinates me.

Great vid Eric! My reserve list is full now at the library. I intend to read a few after I finish reading The 2023 Australian Stella longlist (just picked up 7 of them today, I've read 4 and it's a brilliant longlist). Yes, Demon for the win! I've also read The Marriage Portrait and Stone Blind, sadly neither of the novels lived up to my expectations, I prefer their previous novels. I've been going to read Glory for a while, it didn't immediately grab me from the start so I'd put it down waiting to see if it was on this list. No Horse from Geraldine Brooks is a bit disappointing for me, I was hoping to include it in reading for this list. Anyways, Happy Reading!

Last year I read the longlist with mixed results-some were gems I never would have read otherwise; a few stole hours of my life that I can’t get back. Although all I’ve not read sound interesting, I’m currently * most curious about The Pod, Bandit Queens & Stone Blind. I’d hoped Demon Copperhead would be on the list & would be hype if she won, but can’t say I think she SHOULD unless I read all of them. I can say it was in my top 3 books of the year & is an unfiltered & accurate depiction of Appalachians & their plethora of exponential & generational, cyclical plights. Corporat3 greed, environmental destruction and environmental racism, exploitation and oppression, racism and bigotry, big pharmA th3 corporat3 dru5 dealer in bed w governm3nt, broken foster care system, jail time not for crimes but for inability to pay fines, false narratives like American pie it’s my time has ppl divided who’ll never get a piece bc That pie’s been gobbled up & gone long ascribed status generations before, wealth=health, business of treating sickness not wellness, red v blue but all the corporat3 party, polluted police, sh** schools, and so on & on...... that’s America all over but mannnn she got Appalachia’s experience with it down. Plunder & ravage the land for finite resources, jobs and financial stability, black lung cancer chronic and acute adverse effects, collapsed mines, deaths, widows fatherless kids , etc.but a farce of Americans do thissss ; pride for it. Then big business sucks all that’s left and leaves. No jobs no stability no pride no options. Depression & alcoholism etc . Left w bad backs and knees and pain and mining’s upheaval and removal of earth ugly & toxic byproducts left behind . Here’s some pills for your back ...... pain clinic$ addiction death generational trauma and a stigma that criminalizes/blames the addict & an isolation bc all the rest of Amurika sees you as a hillbilly bumpkin. Blahdiggityblah that was excessive I’ll be surprised if anyone reads this whole thing but if yay if so ... or sowwie?
Probably my worst predicting year ever (2/16), but I'm excited for the new titles and in deep anticipation for the shortlist! One thing I'm really hoping for this season is that more reviewers give Glory a fairer shake than they did during Booker season. Lots of shallow and frankly racist takes that reduced it to being nothing more than "the African Animal Farm," like it had no other redeeming virtues to it. Let's see if those same people are as charitable to Barbara Kingsolver this year, since Demon Copperhead is just "the American David Copperfield," right? But I already know the answer to that.
I started reading Glory today and I am liking the writing and the theme though I didn’t like Animal Farm.

@@EricKarlAnderson, I like the shorter version more than the longer and it is truly an epic telling of how a child loves his memory of it all, but the ending truly blew my mind away at how all those scenes were taken away from the public, but the child remembered all of them in his mind and cherished looking at them all strung together as a memento from his great boss from long ago.

Demon Copperhead and the Marriage Portrait were automatic selections, a few books I haven't heard of. For whatever reason I feel like both Demon and Potrait not gonne be winner. The women prize do loves their surprise and usually the most hyped one missed out the win. Last year Great Circle and Island of Missing Tree, and Vanishing Half for 2021. I predict if Demon gonna win something, it gonna be the Pulizer.
I read I'm a Fan and really found it tiresome. I was disappointed by The Marriage Portrait. I have to start reading Kingsolver including her backlist.
