I own and throw both types of javelins. Men’s 800 g and women 600 g. The woman’s javelin is shorter and much narrower in diameter. This definitely impedes it from floating better. Makes the carry on it much less than the men’s spear. I think the woman’s spear should have more diameter to it and perhaps more length while maintaining the weight.

I don't know about crying and feeling bad after you beat her personal best by a LOT to take the lead, and then the German girl doing a career throw, beats you on the final throw. You know? It means you were hoping the final thrower would do poorly. Anyway. Javelin is a GREAT event. 73 yard throws is super amazing for a football quarterback. The interesting thing to watch is how they try to build up with their footwork leading up to the throw and then burst on the release. The leg they throw off of goes 'straight' which is counterintuitive to any person who doesn't know how to throw like this, because they're moving forward kinda fast and these are BIG girls, and instead of spamming a throw, they compress into the ground and the leg goes straight instead of bent, forward, or too 'up,' so they're working with a purer upward force which they can channel. One of those women, the off leg went straight up and backwards and it was a great throw. The final throw was amazing because there was this difference between hers and all the other throws shown on the clip. It had a much purer horizontal force, so the German girl had some sort of leap in how to channel the upward force from the straightening of the throwing leg, through the arms. She could spend a LOT of time learning what she did, because it was totally awesome. The Chinese girl spammed emotion from the crowd to break her personal best. Glad the German won.

I just noticed something. In agility, reflex or eye-hand coordination sports like fencing or ping pong, there are a lot of left handed athletes. Here, in a sport involving more strength than agility, I see only right-handed athletes. Is this just a coincidence or my imagination, or is there something behind this?

Left handedness gives an advantage to players who are hitting balls to an opponent because your backhand is switched. In the javelin throw, handedness gives no advantage.

I think it could be just coincidence, because the most used arm is also the stronger one... and training the already stronger arm is probably the best. But lefties are generally more creative. The right half of the brain coordinates the left hand and is also the creative part. For activities that require creativity, the lefties should have a certain advantage.

Can someone explain why the women's throws are 30m shorter than the men's? Is it different equipment or throwing technique/power?

Less power of women. The spear for women is 2,2 -2,3m long, 2cm thick and weights 600g. Record: 72,28m Men‘s spear is 2,7- 2,8m long, 3cm thick and weight 800g. Record: 98,48m Edit: I suppose equality is here not possible: men will trow the lighter spear into the audience, and if women get to trow the heavy spear it would look kinda funny... 😂🤷🏻‍♂️

It's because this patriarchal society is so unfair that the meter used to measure women's throws is longer than the meter used to measure men's throws, believe me, that was told to me by a femnst.
