    Nastia and Shawn were such stars that we forget how amazing Yang Yilin was during those games, such a classical looking gymnast, great knees, toe point, straight legs.

    From the perspective of being older now and seeing things that have come to light from 2019, I have to say that for the sake of Nastia’s emotional health and relationship with her father, Valeri “Gold is the only color that counts in medals” Liukin, it’s very fortunate for her she won the AA gold medal. There are many stories of how harsh he was when disappointed.

    @@maureenkelly738 yeah I often watched and felt so had for Nastia, especially that being her dad. I'm sure her training was rough and he did alot of putting her down because hes her dad and could get away with being more harsh with her. I was so happy for her that she won this. I'm sure her dad would never have let her live it down if she didn't.

    HB - I think so too. Too bad for Shawn, but Nastia NEEDED it more and Shawn had the emotional maturity to handle disappointments. All that being said, you can clearly see that Valeri truly loved his daughter. I don’t know as how he would have wanted her to surpass him in gold medals though. He did an emotional number on Katelyn Ohashi by body shaming her and probably gave the same treatment to all his athletes. Good thing Nastia has a naturally slim body type. Sometimes though she looked a bit too thin. Someone else pointed out that many of his athletes, except for Nastia developed serious injuries ie Katelyn and Rebecca Bross. Still, Nastia deserved her win. She did a tremendous meet.

    I used to think that Shawn had been robbed, but I've come to appreciate Nastia's amazing elegance. I still feel so bad for Shawn after watching her KZread videos about how upsetting it was to come second. She wore a huge grin on her face and supported Nastia through it all with such grace when she must've been hurting so much inside. Two legends indeed.

    @rusgymqueen lesenkia they werent overscored. They had a 2.5 composite requirement and a completely different CoP with much higher values and higher CV values and d scores. Also they were more lenient like allowing a step out of landings on the floor. That isnt allowed now without deduction.

  • @emmsy9295

    @emmsy9295

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@aubreyolmstead5551 They were overscored in a sense for execution, but the idea of Shawn being robbed is absurd. Yang Yilin and Semenova were robbed by Shawn who had her 2.3 twist "Amanar" credited, instead of downgraded to a DTY. In fact, the B panel judges debated for a long time about awarding her the 2.5 and Nellie Kim gave it to Shawn. Even Tim Daggett mentioned how dangerous it was for Shawn if they downgraded her. Nastia was also given an unearned 0.1 CV bonus for her onodi+wolf jump that Nellie Kim also had to overrule the B panel judges, but that doesn't compare to Shawn's 0.7 unearned DV.

    nated0gggg - but Shawn could handle winning a silver. Nastia would have had to forever live with her father’s disapproval and disappointment if she did not win a gold. There are stories about how he acted if a gymnast was expected to do well, yet did not. Having said that, Nastia had the performance of a lifetime and deserved the AA gold medal.

    For Nastia, I think it was strategy and good coaching. She could never catch up to Shawn in terms of difficulty and power due to Nastia’s height. So they attacked in terms of near flawless execution, and showcased her near perfect lines in every opportunity she can. It was power vs beauty. This may not be a question when it’s Simone vs the world but during this era, beauty won.

  • @francish6695

  • @DudeEM

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@francish6695 those are indeed true. But we all know that gymnastic scoring can be partly subjective as well. Some may score a gymnast for being able to accentuate finesse and form with physical beauty aka beautiful lines.

    What really did it for Nastia was having 0.550 A score advantage over Shawn. Shawn had 0.9 and a 0.1 difficulty score advantage for vault and beam but Nastia had a 1.550 difficulty score advantage thanks to bars. For the Floor, Shawn had some of the worlds most difficult tumbling but Nastia worked to close the gap with increasing her tumbling difficulty to where it was only 0.3 behind in A-score for four tumbling passes (Shawn had five), but made up for it in her dance elements. So minimizing their fight as beauty/grace vs. power isn’t that accurate. Shawn may have been a “power” gymnast but she had some of the best form on her elements. She had her issues hitting complete 180 degrees on her split leaps at times but Nastia actually had more deductible form issues than Shawn did. However, on this night, Nastia was totally on while Shawn’s Amanar wasn’t her best. Nastia ended up beating Shawn by her A-score advantage plus one-tenth extra…thanks to bars (they changed the bars rules after this Olympic which hurt Nastia and the Chinese’s extreme bar score advantage), working to close the difficulty gap, and having the best night of her life with her landings and minimizing deductions while Shawn had better nights before…except on floor. Shawn probably gave her best floor performance of her career the night of the all-around and she tied with Nastia there, despite being the power to Nastia’s “beauty”.

    If this was the entire all around with all competitors it would be 2+ hours long. Just looking at the time of the video would tell you it’s a greatly condensed version.

    I was so happy with this result, but I hate how so many fans characterize it. With the way some people act like, it was as if they’re telling the story of Beauty and the Beast. The truth was it was all down to planned content and Nastia hitting it. First off, this code really helped Nastia (and the Chinese) big time as it helped them gain such extreme A-score advantages thanks to bars. Had the following quad’s bar rules applied, Nastia wouldn’t have had such a strong bar advantage. That being said, I can still see Nastia winning thanks to the way she closed the difficulty gap in beam and floor. To summarize this competition, Shawn had a 0.9 and 0.1 A-score advantage on vault and beam. Nastia had a 1.550 A-score advantage on bars. Despite Shawn having some of the most difficult tumbling in the world and even now, her tumbling advantage over Nastia was only 0.3 and Nastia made that up having more difficult dance elements so they ended up tying in A-score on floor. In the end, it wasn’t a battle of beauty v. Power but the fact was Nastia had a 0.550 A-score advantage and needed to hit her routines to win. This night, she had the night of her life. Shawn was close but lost her advantage thanks to not having her best Amanar and having a break and step on beam while Nastia was near perfect (and getting a generous connection call thanks to Nasty Nellie Kim swooping down from her perch to force the beam caller to give Nastia that connection bonus on her Onondi-half-wolf jump combo). Regarding “beauty” v. Power, the truth was that Nastia actually had more deductible form issues on her elements than Shawn did. Shawn actually has excellent form on her elements with the exception being having difficulty hitting 180 splits consistently. Nastia had more form breaks throughout. But tonight, Shawn wasn’t quite drilling and sticking her landings while Nastia was on point with hitting her landings. But the scores do show when it came to execution, they were close and Shawn gave away a bit more than usual thanks to her less than ideal Amanar and unusual break on and step on beam. Nastia unusually stuck everything.

But I also appreciate thoughtful, informed commentary, like you hear from Shannon Miller & Amanda Borden. (Nastia is still getting comfortable, IMHO). I know it's a former gymnast doing the commentary here. Anyone know who this is??
