The rape scene/episode was huge. I love the moral conflict that weighed on Bracco’s character. When I first watched it I definitely wanted her to confide in Tony and have him handle it in only a way Tony Soprano would’ve handled it. But it made me view her character through a staunch view with her sincerely being committed to helping Tony navigate through his own personal struggles and having him become a better version of himself.

Agreed - the unsung moral heroine of the entire series Charmaine; her stupid husband didn't realize she was trying to save him from Tony and himself. She was amazing. And what about Drea de Mateo's character - Chris' gf - amazing too. She's a younger version of Carmella Soprano - selling her soul for shoes and trinkets and diamonds and not facing what her bf/spouse does to get them. Amazing cast of women. They stole show from the men.

Charmaine was outstanding. She and Melfi were the only people who Tony never corrupted. But to suggest that the women stole the show from the men is ludicrous. You don't have a show without Tony Soprano and the violence and the blood. The women make it more interesting to be sure.

I see why some viewers hate Janice, but I don't quite get why Richie is so widely hated. Is it because he's a threat to Tony, the protagonist who the audience empathizes with and relates to? Is it about who Richie is? Do some people see in him out of anybody something special that makes them angry? I don't see people express the same sentiments about Ralph or Phil. With those characters there's usually more affection, I find.

  • @hutch1197

@@officialgoogleyoutube Every character on the show at least had an empathetic side that made you, at times, like them, even though they were otherwise criminals. Richie had no such side. He was a perpetually angry, abrasive, hardened character. We enjoyed Phil because he was just so ridiculous. ("20 years in the can!") And his whacking was the best of the series. I don't think anyone was sorry to see Ralph go.

Interesting women characters on the show? Carmela, Adriana, Janice, and above all, Livia, the greatest villain in TV history. It's one thing to be Jennifer Melfi, a character who gets to think out loud with Tony, her partner, and Elliott Kupferberg. We know what she thinks and feels. But it's another thing to be Adriana and Carmela, who are compromised, trapped, and suffocated in the world of wiseguys all at the same time. We can Only Guess at the depth of their loneliness and regret, and that's what draws me in.

Check out 3:03 how Carmela (forgot her real name) rolls her eyes extremely at what Melfi is saying, and then they have cut the footage and pasted it to another moment!! So something happened there, that they obviously didnt want to show.

Mengele went home and hugged his kids too. I don't think anyone was rooting for Tony. The Sopranos was a great series that a US audience had never seen before, and broke many rules about what can be done on television, but ultimately it was about America and Capitalism.

I also think that it's arguably the best show ever, I wouldn't want to align myself with the 'great majority' of its fanbase though. I can certainly remember the Melfi rape scene, and the one later in the episode where she has the opportunity to set Tony upon its perpetrator. If you weren't intrigued by them, fair enough. Same goes for your opinions on Carmela et al, but they don't need prefacing with some hyperbolic aspersions about the interviewer.

maybe you wanted something unambigious but david chase has no regrets and knew that’s how he wanted it ended, ambiguously (if you want to think tony and the family lives) or clearly final (if you want to believe the symbolic cut to black/tony’s whacked idea)

@@Bonobanos He actually never did get whacked. In fact when Tony came close to death he saw a lot of family members when he was in a coma. This contradicts the concept of the lights turning off when you die

You don't find the women the most interesting? Tony doesn't have to have much self-conflict as a man of action, he can justify what he does through the culture he was raised in. But the women on the show are expected to fulfil the nurturing and obedient functions and the whole inner conflict that comes from that (knowing what they are complicit in) makes their dramatic jeopardy that much more powerful. Tony never has to doubt... Carmela does, every waking moment.
