Women In Construction | Julie Kuklinski | TEDxJacksonWomen
Skilled trades offer tremendous opportunity for women that have been trained for traditionally female jobs or outside with workforce altogether. The Hurricane Katrina recovery effort was so massive, it began to change cultural attitudes about construction and manufacturing jobs and who should be doing them.
Julie Kuklinski is the Program Director for the Moore Community House Women in Construction Program. Julie came to the Gulf Coast in May of 2006 as a hurricane relief volunteer rebuilding homes affected by Hurricane Katrina. During this time, she led all-female crews in mold remediation work, demolition work, and all other types of residential construction. Julie’s experiences working in east Biloxi led her to the Women in Construction Program in 2008. She was recognized by the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission in 2010 and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Women’s Fund of Mississippi and the Faith in Women Coalition. Additionally, she serves on the DOL Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs Mega Project EEO Committee, DOL Office of Apprenticeship Secretary of Labor’s Advisory Committee on Apprenticeship ad hoc committee for women in apprenticeship, and the Mississippi Apprenticeship Program planning council.

I roll iron. Heavy equipment. Scrapers, dozers, loaders, rollers, water pulls. First job interview I traveled out of state for it. 25$ in my pocket. Not enough to get back home with. First was told that the office wasn't hiring, and I informed them that I wasn't there for an office job. They told me that they would call if they had an opening. I said I wasn't leaving without a job. I sat outside that office until closing time and he looked surprised to see me and asked why I was still there. I repeated what I had said earlier. I was told to come in for work the following Monday. I started in a dump truck and worked my way up. It's hard work, but I think my dad would have been proud.

I’ve been in the trades for 33 years. I now make more than 40 dollars an hour. I don’t even know cause I haven’t looked at a pay check in four years. I know I make enough and I don’t take days off. I would recommend it. I’m a boat builder and love it

Julie ended her talk triumphantly with "I am a tradeswoman." A very substantive talk about the value of trade jobs and particularly how women are under represented for no good reason.

Any advice for a woman looking to get into trades with no experience?? I live in southern CA and have no experience in trades. I have been a grocery manager for years and I am looking to make a jump.. Seeking guidance. TIA

I wish there were more women like this in the comments that brang home the bacon for men tor a change. We have all this so called progress where kids can be men or women but men cant flip the switch and stay home

Men can stay at home if they find someone willing to provide for them. It’s rare to find that but it’s possible.

No bady hire woman in construction I know from my own experience. I pay for George Brown College study there 2009-2012. Totally qyalufaid nobady want to hire me was to 300 interviews maybe. Man was laughing in woman who want to get their job ok...... Is terrible discrimination in Canada against WOMAN!!!!!! On Construction job ok!!!!!! I want to. Opan school for girls in construction.

@@hashimahhassan8601 Where in which country you work in construction? I a coming from Europe and in Europe do not have any restrictions to work in construction. I finish 3 years of College as a Building Renovation Technician in Canada but do not help me because of discrimination against women in construction in Canada.
I've painted/sandblasted bridges and tanks for the last 20 years. I have yet to see a woman want to get up high or hold a blast hose for 12 hours. And that's fine. Just stop acting like you can do everything we can. You can't.

That's an insult to women who actually worked twice or thrice harder in the trades, just to have men telling them they're physically weak and incompetent. Women are not there to prove anything. They're there because they respect their part in the society and had their choice just like you do.
