Women and the Priesthood (Priesthood is Not What You Think)

You can watch the full discussion here:
• Priesthood Is Not What...
When church culture/doctrine debates pop up on social media, I like to take some time to understand the different perspectives on the issue, but if my search for truth ends on instagram or google searches I don’t actually learn what’s true.
John C. Pingree in this last general conference outlined the building blocks for finding eternal truth:
1. God is the source of eternal truth.
2. The Holy Ghost testifies of all truth.
3. Prophets receive truth from God and share that truth with us. (Scriptures/General Conference etc.)
4. God expects us to seek, recognize, and act on truth.
Social media is great for sparking questions and providing me with interesting topics to study. But I understand the doctrine of Christ not by following more influencers online, but by going to the source of truth, God, in prayer, asking for understanding, and then showing Him that I want revelation on the topic by studying His holy scriptures and studying the words of His living prophets. I then rely on the Holy Ghost to testify to my spirit what is true.
If you are having internal turmoil on this subject, here are some recommendations to better understand the priesthood, what it does, why we’ve been given keys on earth, how we as both men and women can access its power etc., feel free to drop other recommendations in the comments.

Seeing the priesthood as a source of worldly power is the exact OPPOSITE of the intentions of the priesthood. Excellent video.

There is a quote from President Joy D. Jones in her talk titled, 'An Especially Noble Calling' (April 2020). They are very clear and uplifting on this matter; These are her words; 'Brothers and sisters, we all seek God’s power in our lives. There is beautiful unity between women and men in accomplishing God’s work today. We access the power of the priesthood through covenants, made first in the waters of baptism and then within the walls of holy temples. President Nelson taught us, “Every woman and every man who makes covenants with God and keeps those covenants, and who participates worthily in priesthood ordinances, has direct access to the power of God.” My personal admission today is that as a woman I didn’t realize, earlier in my life, that I had access, through my covenants, to the power of the priesthood. Sisters, I pray that we will recognize and cherish priesthood power as we “cleave unto [our] covenants,” embrace the truths of the scriptures, and heed the words of our living prophets.'

AMEN!!! I have know since childhood that the priesthood is given for individuals to become heirs of the kingdom of God. That in the endowment we as women are heirs if we follow Christ and his everlasting gospel.

I didn't expect that. Not only was Greg Madsen speechless, but my mind had only appreciation for solid truth being taught. I had many things going through my mind while this man spoke, and all of his words checked out logically.

I was quite shocked by the women demanding power all over latter day saint site. The priesthood isn't something man can just give to whomever asks, it's God's power. When he walked the earth he loved and served both equally but still, only the men were ordained. I'm so grateful men have that gift and ability to unite and serve their families. Even when men use the priesthood as a form of power and authority it's "Amen to the priesthood" so those same rules would apply to women as well making it irrelevant. Single women can hold local and general callings like primary, young womens and relief society without ever having been married while men cannot. We're all equal with different roles and I'm grateful for that.

Given men and women benefit equally from the priesthood being on earth I’m more than happy for just men to hold it. It is a mantle of service and as a woman I have sufficient service opportunities in administering and nurturing home and family, and Church callings, to fill my days.

As there is no precedent in scriptural history I'm happy to leave that one to God. My identity and worth is not defined by it so I'm good with that. Seeking power is the opposite of Priesthood power so I have no desire to hold it, unless God were to determine otherwise. @@jmut714

@@jmut714 There is a reason, because we have womanhood. It's in our natures to nurture. It goes along with our natural gifts. Have you ever played sports with a ball hog? It's not fun. Same with other areas of life. We don't need to have it all, nor were we created to. We can be glad the men also have something equally wonderful to inspire and motivate them to be like Christ.

Thanks, Parker, for putting this edit together. Since I first heard this explained in a different video by Todd Mclaughlin about a year or two ago, I was surprised and a bit cautious about the doctrine, not because I didn't want to it be true, but because it was a different paradigm than I was used to. Since that time however, I've noticed it all over in the scriptures (becoming clean) and general conference talks (equal access to Priesthood power), especially by President Nelson and some of the other Apostles and more recently by some of the Sisters. It makes more sense to me now compared to my past paradigm, and has excited me to try to better understand my responsibilities in "becoming clean" through magnifying the different priesthood offices I've been ordained to. It's also exciting to me to think that my wife and I have equal access to Priesthood power, on conditions of faithfulness to our covenants, though our responsibilities may look a little different.

  • @patrickjohnson3671

The priesthood offices that men hold are conduit to the priesthood and not the priesthood it self. Men and women have equal opportunities to the priesthood once they are faithful.

I think women aren't too different from men, in that we also need to become, holy, clean from the blood and sins of this generation. I do think the priesthood helps men do that, and that motherhood and other service as women does the same. Proper interpretations of the endowment are backed up with scripture.

I am not sure what endowment McLauchlin is talking about however it certainly is not the LDS one. Men are "pronounced clean" or they "may become clean". Sisters though are never made clean. The initiatory and 2nd anointing are not book ends either. The 2nd anointing is just another ordinance that doesn't guarantee anything. This is really just another way of saying we need to "ordinance" our way to heaven only through the LDS church.

There is no priesthood in the church until the age to come. Revelation 20:6 KJVS Blessed and holy is he that hath part in the first resurrection: on such the second death hath no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with him a thousand years.

Traditions, traditions created by the Satan. If you. Look at Christ, he treated women as equals. That was one of the things that upset the Jewish population and led to his demise - which of course lead to his ultimate and infinite glory. Can women be witnesses? Yes, Mary, his mother was a witness, the woman at the temple both witnesses of his birth. The first witness of his death, a woman. I believe it was i. 1996 but could be 1997, at Woman’s conference, President Hinkley gave a clarion call to all women in the world to take their rightful place in the world. To me it was like a key was turned. That is when real changes started happening. I have watched it come to pass. AND I have watched the adversary fighting with all his might. The alphabet thing, I believe, is his attempt to cheapen womanhood. Women fighting for the right to be ordained is a sad misunderstanding of the truth. They do not need to be ordained. They need to attend the temple and find out their true role. They need to read i. The scriptures and understand their role. No woman needs a helpmeet. Men need a helpmeet. There is a reason for this. It is there, we just have to open our spiritual eyes and truly see ourselves. Over the history of the earth since Adam and Eve, womankind had been oppressed. We are the greatest threat that Satan has. He has done everything he possibly can to keep women oppressed. When they, the oppressors, go before the judgment bar of God, they will have to answer for their actions. This is what I think. It is my opinion and I do not put it out as church doctrine.

It's like saying let the women be the breadwinners and the men take care of the kids. Women are better at that, and men get the fulfillment of providing for a family. Not that it's a women problem. If the women are put in charge, and I can guarantee membership going down the drain. That's because men NEED these roles. It distracts us from all the bad things. That's why men shouldn't be alone, lol. That doesn't mean I'm right, but it just makes sense to me.

I mean Adam is given preisthood keys at the creation of man, so this isn’t really a policy thing in my eyes, it’s been assigned this way by God. Also women have the authority and power to create life, so women bring the spirits from their to here, and then men through the keys they’ve received help bring those spirits from here to there. (make covenants) This is equality.
