My grandmother always told me I wasn’t her son’s daughter and treated me badly because he married my mom after I was born. I felt extremely vindicated to find out my siblings and I are all full siblings. Too bad she died before I could show her this evidence.

I'm sorry that happened to you. I have a similar story with my family. My mother accused my sister-in-law of being pregnant with someone else's baby before she married my brother. I fought with my mom, defending my sister-in-law. I said to myself, please let that child look exactly like my brother. When her first grandchild, my first niece, was born, not only was she born a good 9 months and a week AFTER they got married, she looks so much like her dad, with her round face and almond eyes. Of course my mother didn't apologize. To this day, she doesn't get along with my brother and his family, and favours some grandchildren over others. Being older doesn't always mean becoming wiser. I’m sorry you were treated poorly by your grandma. My mom was treated the same way by her father and his family. They didn’t believe she was his because she had her mom’s darker coloring vs his red hair and blue eyes. DNA eventually proved that she was his daughter all along.

I once sat in a meeting at school with a boy and his father. The boy knew that the man was not his biological father but the man had raised him. The boy said at one point in the meeting "you are not my father... (pause) but you are my Dad, and I love you..." There wasn't a dry eye in the house afterwards.

My son ordered the DNA test..the day he got the results he called me. He said.."Mom, is there anything you want or need to tell me before I open this?" And then he added if he shared it with his sister was there going to be anything different she needed to know..would they both match? At first I was insulted..but only for a few quick seconds. I assured him there were no hidden secrets and he and his sister would match 100%. They did but after reading several of these stories he said he had seen I am greatly impressed and appreciated that fact he waited and came to me first giving me a chance to tell him just in case.

Very good on you! I totally understand feeling insulted but I'm happy he gave you a chance. I took at test earlier this year and just this week I find out I probably have a brother the same age as me on my dads side. My parents have been apart for over 30 years so if it turns out to be true I hope my mom isn't hurt by it too badly.

I would only raise one point. It's important to know who your biological parents are to see if you are predisposed to certain diseases. In this particular case it was her mother who failed her. As far as the man who raised her as his own, well, if there was no need for him to know then let it be. Why ruin a man's life near the end of his days?

I am thankful the man who was her real dad, who raised her, did not ever know. He was an honorable man, lived an honorable life, was good to his family and believed the best in them. To repay that devotion with pain would have been destructive and reprehensible.

My ex always suspected he wasn't his Dad's "real" son, and was treated different for that reason. Ancestry verified he's his sister's half sibling at 60 years old, and it brought him closure and forgiveness

My X was adopted & our daughter tested to see what that half of her dna held. In the end I was able to determine the identity of her dad’s birth parents & family. Maybe a year ago a new very close match appeared for her & her dad’s half sister. Turns out he is a half brother, given up for adoption, the 2nd baby the birth mom gave up. He didn’t know he was adopted & both parents have passed. He is still coming to grips with it all.

The man who raised her was her dad.

Well, the kids wouldn't look different because the two men look almost like they are the same person!

The same thing happened to me. It’s so shocking I’m still in denial sometimes. My husband said he wished he’d never talked me into getting the test. I don’t regret it at all. It really messes with your head when all involved have passed away and you can’t ask questions. You feel your whole life is a lie.

We went down to get our blood typed to receive emergency cards. The poor nurse nearly fell out of her chair when I didn't match. She thought she had revealed a terrible secret. My parents laughed and said, "She's adopted."

@Honeysuckle Blossom but don't forget that a family where everyone has brown eyes, one child CAN have blue eyes,if for example there is a grandmother or grandfather with blue eyes. Many people think that two browneyed parents must get all their children browneyed but that is not true at all. I personally know a family with four kids where all the kids are copy of their dad. Mom and dad has brown eyes and three brothers have brown eyes and one has light blue eyes. the mums grand mom has same lightblue eyes,but noone else of their relatives has blue eyes,all other uncles and grandparents and aunts has brown eyes.

I worked with an older man yrs ago, who told me he'd been married 38 yrs & after they had their 2nd boy, when married 2 yrs, his wife slept in the other bedroom as she was done having children. He said he'd had affairs with women over 50, so he didn't have any more children & cause a "scandal."

I'm glad her father didn't know. Why put him through the pain? Sometimes it's better not to know the truth.

We really don't know if he knew or not. I had friends there were in a similar situation. With one friend her dad knew. But no one knew he knew for 30 years. He always knew. Another friend similar situation and learned had dad married her mom when she was 2 and her sister was a baby. They back dated their marriage date 3 years and never told the kids. It is what it is. In both situations the kids thought mom cheated...but both neither did.

Like what she says, its hard to know if its better to know the truth ... Sometimes the truth can tear an otherwise happy family apart, like in this case she can potentially detest her mother so much for the affair that it overrides all the great memories they shared together ... If there's no hproblem within the household, only happy memories, why seek out something that can probably cause upheavals within the family ?

God allowed this to become revealed after all parties who could have experienced hurt had passed. Only her mother remained who fully knew the truth anyway. It seems it happened this way for a reason to spare much pain, especially her real dad who raised her, who did not deserve such pain at all.

I went thru same thing. Ancestry dna showed that my father was a young man that hooked up with my Mother one night only at age 23. MY mother was 23 and single. I was raised by my wonderful grandparents. Unfortunately, my birth father had passed away at 83 before DNA. I have contact with a half brother and sister. They are all good people. My dad had a total of 8 kids. I waited until I was 80 years old to find my truth. I now feel at peace and so thankful for DNA testing. I am a mix of many nations.

Even though my parents aren't my biological parents, they are still my parents. They raised me after all and should get credit! I found my birth mother a few years ago but we have not met yet.

I loved my parents, they are my only mom and dad even though I was blessed to find my birthmother and have her In my life for 30 yrs. they are all in Heaven now. Meeting her and my siblings was a really good thing for me and some of them also got to know my adopted parents. Lots of love and respect was shared.

Your parent doesn't always mean biological. The parents who raised you are the ones who changed your diapers, stayed up with you when you were sick and waited for you when you decided to break curfew.

Every child DESERVES to know where they came from...100%! Honesty in this area of life is paramount.

A lot of these older generations will realize their mom lied about who their dad was after getting these tests. Children deserve a right to know who their biological family is, so it's selfish of the mom/even step parent not to let them know at some point. They could of had a chance to reach out to that family to bond before it's too late.

My aunt was the result of an affair and my aunt found out from ancestry dna. However both my grandparents were having affairs at that point, and ended up divorcing when my aunt and mom were kids, so there was trouble in paradise between both parents for a long time. However my aunt was still so shocked and saddened to find out her “Daddy” wasn’t her bio dad💔

Oh I talk to my mother about it regularly and she would never give me the name of the guy who got her pregnant… She said it was a person not worth knowing… And I guess she was right. Oh and my sister were their child so she was my half-sister… And when she learned all of this she was about a hateful a person as you could meet

It's a long story, but....turns out, my aunt was raped and had a daughter, 16 years later my uncle raped the daughter my aunt had since it wasn't his child and he was a pig. The 16 yr old hid the fact that she was raped by her (step father) she had the baby, step father insisted it ( a boy was born, but said it was a girl to throw her off) be taken away and adopted, …. years later she looked for her daughter, found the family that had her(but it was really a boy unbeknownst to her) was told to go away and stay away, that the baby was not there (when it really was) she kept on looking until she died...…...5 years later that boy did a DNA test and so did my niece on the other side of the family....We find out my aunt knew all the time and didn't tell where the baby was.....there is so much to this story, but he never got to see his birth mother.....but the biological family welcomed him and he is close with all of them now. He has aunts & uncles that are really his half siblings...…...are you following this? It's really confusing. It all turned out well except for the biological mother, who was my cousin, she died without ever finding her son or knowing that she had a son and not a daughter. Bittersweet story

It could be; yes. My uncle was a disgusting man and there is so much more to tell, but it would hurt a lot of people. My aunt is already afraid of what is going to happen to her when she stands before Jesus. She's 85 now. I'm sure she's forgiven. But it is one heck of a story!

I totally understand what happened this woman ... it happened to me as well. Once I knew the truth i reached out to my 6 nieces who are now in my life and I am sharing the story of our mother they never knew about their grandmother ... but now they do and all the other children she had. This has helped me understand a deeper dense of our mother I grew up with her and all the dots connect.

Not a NPE story, but I found out in 2018 that I have a full sibling as a result of an Ancestry test. I was raised to believe I was an only child, and had no idea that my parents had another child prior to having me that they gave up for adoption. Once I asked my mom, she was finally honest with me.

My husband was told at the age of 14 his father was not his bio dad.He was so upset could not deal with the betrayal he turned to drugs and drink at a early age,he felt as if he didnt belong many tears and heartache was shared still to this day it hauts him.

Wow, the two men look somewhat alike, and she looks like both of them!

what I find interesting is that it is considered "normal" to advise adopted children that they are adopted but not children born to a coupe that they have half siblings. My four full siblings and I found this out in our twenties. Luckily our father knew of our mom's previous child and we all adapted quickly. I was so happy to have an older sister. I just wish I had met her sooner.

Ah! The “good old days” so many long to go back to, when “family values” reigned and everyone followed the rules.

I would dispute this. There have been many secrets, rapes and rules broken throughout time. Fortunately now they can be easily uncovered.

She looks so much like her real dad.. sad she never got to meet him.. there's just so many families going through this story

I found a first cousin last year who was a child of my rascally uncle. My sister knew her in high school. She's upset and I'm keeping her secret as it's her story to tell if she ever wants to. Her "dad" is still alive and she wishes not to tell him. My uncle has passed, but she has 5 living siblings. Things could change someday and she would be welcomed with open arms by everyone.

I know my Dad is not my father but he is Daddy and I love him to bits, I am 58 now but 52 years ago in my 6th birthday is when I started to call him Daddy and I still call him Daddy today, when Mom got sick we looked after her together when she passed away I noticed he was worried but he never said a word. One day we were at our new Dr getting to know him and he asked us when it was time where would I place my “Father” I looked straight in the eye and told him I did not care where my “Father went” but for my daddy I would be looking after him I heard a sob next to me and that’s when I realised he had been worried as to what would be happening in the future because he was not my biological father. At first I was stunned and then I realised this was what had him worried since Mom passed away as she was my biological mother. I told him that I know he was not my “Father” but I also knew at the age of 6 he “Was my Daddy” and that he would always be there for me and the day I called him “Daddy” on my 6th birthday I was making a promise to him that I would be there always for him. Dr was quite during the whole talk and afterwards he said we had acted more like Father and Daughter than so many of his patients. That was 10 years ago and we still visit the Dr together in all our meetings. Dad did say if I wanted to contact my Father he would help, I asked him what for, the man had nothing to do with me he was just the sperm that added life to an egg, but You my Dad are the one who brought me up and gave me values to following my life, his answer was I might like to get to know all of my brothers and sisters, whom my Father has quite a lot of due to his fooling around before, during and after my Mother divorcing him. I knew about them but I’m just not interested at this time in my life.I think this is why I have not done the DNA test yet.

Mine resulted in connecting with a man who's dna pointed him to me. Turns out my mom was adopted. NO ONE knew this. Probably even her. I went from thinking I was 75% German to learning that I'm 80% scots irish, with 3rd cousins all over County Cork.

My daughter just got a call from a woman about 8 years younger than she is. She had done a DNA test and had followed up with the family members that were on the test. In doing that, she got my daughter's name and got in touch with her. Apparently, my ex husband and this girls mother had a fling after we were divorced. But, the real surprise in all this is that the man my daughter's dad had grown up thinking was his dad, was not his dad at all. All the DNA tests being done did not mention his last name or any person with his last name as a relative of either my daughter or her half sister. Apparently, grandma was a "rolling stone." They did find out who his real father was. All are deceased now. This girl never got to meet her real father and her real father never knew that another man was his birth father. Grandma is deceased too. Kinda sad really! If he had known he had another daughter he would have wanted to know her and if his mom had known she had another grand daughter, she would have loved her. My daughter and her half sister plan on meeting in September. The family resemblance is amazing. I'm excited for them.

At least your situation with this child is AFTER you broke up with your ex. This is great that you are excited for your daughter. You can help her & this new-found sister gain greater insight into the GOOD aspects of who your Ex is. It may be a bit difficult to keep back the bad info, [maybe reveal it later] but for the child's sake it would be so EMPOWERING. Kudos! She was dating a man, got pregnant, found out he was married, and ended up giving the baby up for adoption because she just couldn't raise a kid on her own at the time. It was really sad, but she did what she could given the circumstances.

When taking these tests keep 1 old saying in mind " Momma's baby , Daddy's MAYBE " ! Also when at college my roommate told me he was adopted and this concerned him I then told him family is not what it's cracked up to be . Years later on the phone he told he reconnected with his siblings and well he told me I was right in what I said and why I said it , his siblings could not hold a job. And always wanted to borrow money , I met the people who raised him , they were his family . It's more important to know the truth than live a lie .

Yeah I knew a woman who was adopted. She got in contact with her birth mom in her early 20's. At first she thought her bio mom was the coolest person ever, so fun, they'd go to concerts together and stuff, but she quickly found out her bio mom was really dysfunctional and just couldn't adult. Sadly the woman who adopted her was a narcissist, so it's not like the family that raised her was any better, but at least they were more stable. Life doesn't always turn out the way we hope, but at least she has answers and doesn't have to wonder about certain things her whole life. I suppose there's some peace in that.

In a sense I am not so sure that there were so many lost opportunities. The man whom she thought was her father did a great job. It is unfortunate that she didn't get to meet her biological father because everyone is naturally curious.

Truth. Never too late. And family should be cherished.

That woman told her biological father’s widow he fathered two kids with her Mom!?! Man that’s cold. I would have waited until she was dead to approach my siblings as why destroy her memories? It was cruel.

Then there was this fellow who always called his children "mother of five". It so happened they were visiting friends and when it was time to leave our fellow said to his wife "come along, mother of five". His by now pissed off wife responded "coming, father of three".

That happened with my folks. Father came home after work and cheerfully called out ‘Hello Mother of three’. My mom, who had a rough day called out ‘hello father of two’. We joke about it all the time. I think her meaning was - in jest - the kids were so bad today, one is no longer with us. Pretty sure I’m Dad’s cause I look just like his sister. 😂🤣

Always be cautious when taking a DNA test. Be prepared for the unexpected. And remember Don’t blame anyone if you haven’t walked in their shoes. Try to have some compassion. It’s not always about us 🙏🏽

WOW!! I too am all about truth!! I'm glad your Mom was honest when confronted with this...

Secrets like that in our family didn't need a DNA test. Letters were found and lives were turned upside down.

NPE means “Non Paternal Event” NOT “Not parent expected”

I personally know of 3 situations where the test results that did not turn out well.

Truth is a HUGE priority. She is a wise woman.

My mom (RIP) died in 2022 at 75. But on her 70th birthday, I got an email from Ancestry and I was so excited that I opened it at 2:30 am and I never went back to sleep because there were first, second and third cousins of a family that wasn’t the one we knew about. So I told her on her birthday that her dad wasn’t her dad. A man who died in her arms. I showed her her great grandparents photos and unfortunately everyone on this new side wanted nothing to do with us. And I figured out which brother was her father after she had passed.

I know for some people this story is a big deal . For those of us who's father was a real piece of work all by their selves. We sit back and wish we had a man who loved us as much as any father would. He may not have been your real dad but he loved you and you never know he may have guessed you weren't his but didn't care he loved you anyway.we will never know the real truth once we loose our parents.we can only guess at the truth. I am so sorry the man you called father isn't still with you.

True, my dad was alcoholic and abusive, but he was my bio dad as I match cousins from his side of the family. No, I do not wish he was not my father, I just wish he had been a loving father and not addicted to alcohol. I am glad my mom did not cheat on him which shows what a good woman she was. However, as abusive as he was I would not have blamed her if she had.

My step dad found out he had a half sister he never knew about 2 years ago. When his mom was nineteen she got pregnant and the guy don’t want anything to do with the child. She couldn’t go to her parents for help because her dad would have literally killed the guy for abandoning her so she had to give the baby up for adoption. The sister took a dna test and matched with a cousin.

I went on a self-discovery journey that involved history books and digging through files in old archives, it was a fabulous journey that ends with me living in the World of created science fiction that we exist in now. I was raised with honesty and truth also and taught that it is in the pages of books that were written by the people who lived before us! DNA testing didn't exist when my father was alive. This was a great story to prove that the ones you have trusted your entire life, may be holding secrets that they will take the grave - IF, you don't question the events of the past! Excellent interview! Always question :)

On the plus side you gain family you didn't know. I'm seeing this happen with a family member that has the same issue. Her new found family is very nice & welcoming.

I’m 51 Grew up in a foster home The man who I was told is my father died when I was 19,,,, I met him three times. He always denied saying he wasn’t my father. My mother swears he was my father,,,,, when I was 12 I was told by a family friend my real father was an Italian chef. I really want to get a dna test now. I’ve been asked my entire life if I’m Italian.

NPE stands for "non parental event". It doesn't say anything about whether it was expected or not.

I agree. I notice that acronym has been usurped by other websites and it's a little distressing because NPE something different than not parent expected. A different moniker needs to be thought up for those who are misinformed.

A DNA test can't say whether someone is Swedish or not. If the results said she was Nigerian or Chinese, there would be a problem, but DNA can't tell Swedish from Norwegian, English, German, French, etc.

I knew from what little my mom told me… That he was from the USA possibly Illinois or Indiana… So when the DNA test picked up that area. I knew We had to hire a private investigator is to actually locate their address

I refer to my ex-husband as "SD" for sperm donor because that's all he ever was. Just because a man can ejaculate, it doesn't make him a father. Same with women. Just because you are able to give birth, it doesn't make you a mother. Mom and Dad are the people who hold you, feed you, comfort you, educate you, etc. etc. etc. Most of all, they love you.

I wonder how she feels about her birth mother who kept this secret from her and her oldest brother for so many years, and if this situation has affected their relationship. Also, has it changed her relationship with her other four siblings from her original family? I guess it is true that what is done in the "dark" will eventually will be brought to light, at least in this case it was.

It was not her eldest brother that is her full sibling. She was the 4th child and youngest. He was the 3rd. the older 2 (4 total kids not 4 more siblings besides those 2) were their Dad's bio children.

I’m glad she grew up with a Dad, however sad her dad wasn’t given the opportunity to decide for himself.

Camille looks just like her biological father.

Oh, that's rough. I have a friend whose biological father answered her letter by basically telling her he couldn't do it. Couldn't form a relationship with her, etc. Apparently his current family and even his parents and siblings didn't know he'd had a kid back when he was younger and he wasn't going to ever bother telling them. Sometimes people are hurtful and things are messy.

My mom has a fling with some guy while she was in the army got pregnant married another guy. Other guy didnt know she already pregnant. Well she claims shes pregnant by new husband, but math didnt add up by the time they were married and her husband being sent overseas. When their case went in front of judge for her to divorce him get child support for my brother. Judge told my mom she wasnt getting support cause apparently he was overseas at the time my mother got pregnant with my brother. This was in 1968. My brother born in may 66 they married in October 65

What is the name of the Facebook group for NPE (Not Parent Expected)? My brother-in-law made that discovery when he was 69 years old. He also discovered at the same time that the son he raised was not his own! Both his NPE and the mother of the son he raised had died before revealing the big secret.

I knew finding out anyone's DNA would reveal all kinds of secrets.

This happened to someone I know. She too discovered the dad she thought was her biological father... was not. But she is getting to know her biological father. He never knew about her either.

What a wonderful lady.
