Woman living in tiny home claims her eviction is rooted in retaliation

Taura Brown loves her home, but she's in a bitter battle over the tiny house with Cass Community Social Services and its executive director Rev. Faith Fowler.

If y'all did a little digging you'd know the real background story....that this is not Ms. Brown's primary residence, which violates the terms and conditions of this Tiny Home program. More than two years ago Ms. Brown's lease was not renewed because of this violation. For two years Ms. Brown has dragged this through the courts multiple times and every single time the courts have ruled in favor of Rev. Fowler and CCSS. Ms. Brown has filed many complaints with state and federal agencies and all have been dismissed. Rev. Fowler and CCSS have not accepted rent from her for 25 months because she was supposed to leave two years ago. The courts have had it with this lady and on March 22nd a judge wrote an order of eviction with 10 days to vacate.

@@itsallfunandgamestil .....Agree. Ms. Brown was legally evicted on April 4th and did not go willingly, creating an unsafe environment for protestors. Ms.Brown's tiny home sat unoccupied more than 50% of the time. Her name was discovered on a lease on another residence where she spent the majority of her time living. The Tiny Homes program was not designed to provide a second residence. While she dragged this through the courts for two years, she alone effectually denied low income individuals waiting for a tiny home (seniors, homeless, et al) the opportunity to rent and eventually become homeowners. She is not a victim. She is a skilled manipulator who knows how to play the system. The system has had enough of her. I'm glad that her tiny home will now become available to someone living in poverty...who has been gifted the opportunity of low rent and eventual home ownership.

I’ve been in mortgage banking, since 1999. Something is missing from this story. For a landlord to go through the court system and have a judge sign off on eviction means the tenant did something that breaches the lease/rent agreement. Since there are a myriad of things that could cause the breach, it isn’t necessarily something like not paying rent. It could be something really minor, like agreeing to not smoke in the house but the tenant was smoking in the house, as an example. I’d just like to know what was brought to court as a means to evict this lady.

I think the issue is that Taura Brown has more than one residence, and that the Reverend feels that Taura’s intent is to pay the rent for the minimum time to become the owner and then to immediately sell it and cash out. Maybe the part being left out of this is the original lease contract required that the tiny house is to be the tenants sole residence. I dunno.

I think you’re right...but then I also think this mentality is the reason welfare is such a problem in our country. If it actually works, people like this women will eventually get a leg up and advance themselves. To get upset that someone you helped builds wealth is problematic. Penalizing people for becoming independent is about power. I see issues with both parties. Eviction was the best solution here. They need to make it clear that if you outgrow the need that you will be moved off the program. It's best not to take welfare in the 1st place.

Yes! I do not know this case and what is actually going on, but I do know that if renters (be it apt, home, or trailer space ) don't "fit in" you will be retaliated against until you move. The clique of the area actually runs the area, not management . (Because where I lived, if management did not get rid of the renter, the clique would make calls to the LLC that ran the place and managment would be replaced.) If you are not one of them, they won't like you. I know of people hounded for years to make them move because they weren't christian, others who had medical handicaps. Every little thing they could complain to management to, they would. Flowers were called weeds and those people had to remove them or get kicked out. If there was a spider web attached to their home, they had to remove it on threat of being kicked out. One poor guy who was recovering from a stroke fell one day in the club house and instead of the "good" people helping him they told him to get up on his own or they would call the cops and have him removed. People are really evil out there! And in a lot of states, like AZ, the laws are on the side of managment not the renters.

The women acted innocent, of course, and like I was a horrible person. They had no right to free housing; free food and clothes. The media has to paint this woman as a victim ... for obvious reasons. I had a couple of former co-workers who had totally legitimate complaints about the apartment there were living in. I told them they would be better off moving. It was about mold so they could probably have broken the lease and the management would back-off on any lease break fees. Did they do that? Nope Instead they complained and complained. I warned them that they will probably not re-new their lease. She said, "That would be illegal!" I told her, "Only if they tell you they're not re-newing their lease because they complained about the mold." So now, they had to move anyway. Why did they want to continue to stay somewhere they were already unhappy? Some people just love being victims. It's like a job for some people.

A Landlord has a right to evict you/terminate your lease when or if (for whatever reason) they want. The landlord is only required by law to give notice. Even if you pay rent on time - but there has to be a “legal” reason in order for the court to sign off on it.

They can run back to "their personal space" until it's okay to go back to their friends house. So most of the time, the house is empty. There's people that would like a home that they can live in EVERYDAY and EVERYNIGTH !!!! But they're in the streets on a waiting list while people like to play the "I'm homeless games". I see this right outside of my window and all that I can do is pray for the real homeless people.😡

So let me get this straight- you watch the coming and goings of all of your neighbors? You would really hate me. I own my home, but 2 weeks out of the month my job sends me to the headquarters. If you just so coincidentally came over during those times then you would assume that I'm never there. You would be WRONG in your assumption. This is what happens when you don't mind your business. Besides she said that the retaliation started after she refused something food related from the reverend.

People behaving like her (talking surly) make me so glad I am no longer a landlord. When people are talking nicely, paying their rent on time, so I can pay my bills, and not leaving junked cars and trash in the yard, they will have no trouble with me. I'm so glad I'm no longer in the landlord business. It's one of the most ungrateful jobs in the world.

You cannot do what you want when you do not own a home! What is wrong with these people? Go rent somewhere else and fight this lady if you believe she is wrong. This is all out entitlement. SHE LOST IN COURT FOR A REASON. THIS IS NOT THE WAY TO GO!

I totally agree, why pay for this woman housing if she's not even living in the house the majority of the time. It's always the people that get discounted section 8 housing that complain about the living conditions. Give up the house for people that really need it.

Sounds like the owner decided to not renew the lease which is in her right, no matter if the tenant pays on time or not. That's how contracts work. If you don't want to sign a contract to live in someone else's residence you can legal buy and/or build your own home. If this owner has decades of negative interactions then why would you rent from them?

Corrupt property manager thinks her role is to dictate people lives & has people thrown out when they say "mind your own business". That Judge wwho ordered the eviction should be ashamed off themselves too & properly disciplined.

the bad thing about being in a housing agency like this one is that in most cases you need them more than they need you. and what is being said about the worker doing what they are doing doesn't shock me one bit. I dealt with it myself over the years. but in this lady case it looks like she has less rights in not getting evicted. best advice i caqn give. is that if you can avoid a housing agency like this one. avoid it not worth it when the agency has the power to destory your life at a snap of a finger with no recourse you can take.

This woman clearly states that she does not spend the majority time in this house so is she treating it like a weekend house or vacation house? I’m not sure that was the intent of this community. I had thought this place was to be for homeless people, to be able to buy a home and if this woman has another place to stay the majority of the time I’m not sure she would be homeless? It is confusing and I’m not sure what sort of a qualification process was in place. I guess we’ll all have to wait for the facts to be made clear. I’d like to hear all sides of the story.

Trying to figure out why she has to be lying? Why? Because she is well spoken? Because she knows her rights? Landlords are KNOWN to be on BS but I wonder why question her. I mean if the woman had any real bases shouldn’t she denounce her? Plus the other neighbor saying the same thing so what’s unbelievable about what she is saying? I want say it’s because she a black woman. It’s because she a black woman that she lying huh? Go figure
