In my opinion, doctors saying "You have to be an advocate foe yourself" it's a way to put the blame in the victim, a cop-out for lawsuits. If you go to the doctor and they say the tests results were normal, it wouldn't even cross my mind to think they were wrong because you expect them to be right. They made a bad call clearly not investigating it further. I hope this lady doesn't blame herself, it's really one of those cases that someone with expertise told you something and you went for it. Incredibly sad and infuriating.

You're completely right you shouldn't have to be your own advocate at all. Sadly, though I've had to push to be mine. One time I said to them the pain is so bad 'I would try to knock myself out'. Their response was 'your just empathetic, and therefore feel the pain more than others'. I had to pushed for them to investigate, result; organs damaged, heavy internal scarring and had to have a large section of muscle removed across my stomach. I now take daily meds to stop this from happening further. While two years ago I was rushed to hospital with severe stomach pain, my local doctor had already dismissed this and just said it was stomach flu, thankfully paramedics believed otherwise. I was in hospital one week, and all the time the nurses and interns kept saying it's appendicitis, but the specialist ignored them and said it didn't fit. Finally he agreed to do keyhole surgery to investigate; acute appendicitis with peritonitis. Adding insult to injury, and highly embarrassed, he discharged me less than a day after surgery, and though I told him my bladder no longer worked, he said it was a "home issue", I was rushed back in two days later with 1300mls. Yet, the bladder is designed to hold about 400-550ml. My bladder had stopped working. It took a long time and several infections for this to recover. Always push to be believed, you should never ever have to, and I hope you have someone who supports you. Listen to yourself. Ask for another opinion. Challenge them. It's you that suffers, and sadly too many don't care. I've also worked in hospitals on the wards and had to do the same for my patients, and helped save two because of it: severe sepsis, rushed to ICU, the seniors just thought they were quiet. Help others, and be there support to when you can.

Well doctors that tell you to be your own advocate are exactly right! Just had this conversation with a friend who is a surgeon and they tell me how many patients come in that don't even need their services but because they were not treated properly the first time around by the appropriate doctor word is spreading that my friend can help. So now they are getting all these random folks showing up asking for help. This is beyond sad! Not sure why some doctors aren't taking the time to even speak and truly assess their own patients. I know HMO's are offering huge incentives to just churn folks in and out the offices.

I agree completely and I’m so glad somebody else realizes that because that is so detrimental to put the blame back on her for no reason for just asking for help. How are we supposed to know completely what to look for and what to pursue if they say everything is normal what are we supposed to do I guess get second and third opinions nowadays

Well, she is not to be blamed, for goodness sake, but she is suggesting, from her lesson learned, that women be advocates for themselves when medical people are not responding. Does not absolve the medical provider, but she wants to get the word out. The reason is because women (and others) will not think to challenge the doc, exactly as you say you would respond.

This is disgusting to me. I had a good friend who passed away from Breast Cancer at the tender age of 26. She, like this woman, was told "not to worry about it" because she was too young at the age of 22 (when she found a lump). When she finally got a doctor to do something about it, she got the devastating news. Ladies, please, _please,_ always advocate for yourself. Raise all the hell you have to in order to be heard and seen. It might just save your life. ❤

Stage 3C Ovarian Cancer here as well. I knew something was wrong and really advocated for myself for a long time. But since all my CT scans were “normal” drs refused to give me the CA125 tumor marker test. Said it wouldn’t be covered by insurance and I even offered to pay out-of-pocket. I had a transvaginal ultrasound in January 2016 which was normal again. If it wasn’t for me getting flu like symptoms in February and getting another CT scan, that is when I was told I had cancer. I went from being told it was lymphoma, colon cancer to finally after a pelvic biopsy being told it was estrogen based. Then told it was either breast or ovarian cancer. Diagnosed with Fallopian Tube Cancer. No family history. No BRCA gene. And to this day I am still fighting for my health. The drs now want me to have the tumor marker test every 6 months instead of every 2 because according to the GYN association or whatever it is called, they are making the decision that testing too much can cause anxiety. Waiting 6 months to see if my cancer has come back will cause me greater stress. This test was the only indicator that my cancer returned in 2017 when the numbers doubled within 3 months. Not even a scan nor the surgery I had to look around showed that my cancer was back. I am so done with having to explain myself to drs and them fighting me on everything when it’s my life.

I too was told I was too young, but I refused to listen to them. It was later discovered that I had stage 2 going on 3. I’m now in complete remission (6 months of chemo, 30 days radiation, 2 years of Herceptin and I demanded a bi-lateral mastectomy with implants when diagnosed the second time). I will forever have to take Tamoxifen and get scanned annually. Being diagnosed sucks, but if caught early, you can kick it’s ass and only makes you stronger.

The lady proceeded to take my income information and also asked for my child support income. She denied me because she said with the child support I didn’t qualify. Her supervisor saw I was crying and informed her not to use my income from child support since that was not for me. I then qualified for funding. Once I got my mammogram they informed me I had fibrotic cysts ( I think that’s what they said) I had one the size of a large grape. I still continue to get mammograms and I’m 36 now. I even refer to a breast surgeon on top of the diagnostic Mammogram and US that are ordered for a potential biopsy (regardless of the results) . I caught mine too at 31 and I went to the ER to get it checked I was told it’s a cyst and told me to follow up with a Dr but the lady didn’t make a big of deal of it. A year later after I relocated to a new city I felt the discomfort and got it checked again. This time I had an ultrasound and a mammogram and it showed it was stage3. I had a mastectomy and chemotherapy last year. Last year so rough for me but am so grateful to be alive.

I worked at a surgical center. There was a 24 year old woman who needed a mammogram. I had to speak with a medical doctor at her insurance company. We got into a heated exchange. Frustrated and angry, I said, “If it was your balls we wouldn’t even be having this conversation.” He told me to tell her to head to the hospital as he had approved her procedure. She was pregnant and opted not to do any treatment until her twins were born. She actually passed away when they were 6 months old. We have got to advocate for younger women to have a baseline mammogram!! This is just another example of how crazy it is when it comes to women’s healthcare.

I insisted that I get ultrasound it took me a few weeks before I could convince the insurance company and I did have cancer and they had to take half of the breast. You know, I watched one of those "what shocked you the most when you went to live in another country" TikTok videos and there was a chick living in Italy who described what her experience was like getting her biopsy. She came in did her test and was about and was instructed not because unlike in America where they make you wait and come back weeks later, she got her results the same day and fortunately for her they didn't find anything. So she got to leave with a piece of mind and no worries of having to pay the hospital

The tumors have shrunken down to a period. It is almost non existent. So maybe your doctor can place you on that medication. For my mother's bone cancer they are giving her vitamins and minerals through an I.V. to see if that helps. God bless you and see if the medication will help you.

At 28, I found a lump. My PCP said it was most likely a benign lump but would refer me to get a mammogram. The Hoag center denied me a mammogram bc of my age & no family history of BC. My PCP office fought Hoag to get me scheduled, they finally agreed to a ultrasound. At the ultrasound the doctor (a woman) laughed and scoffed when she did my ultrasound, even brought in a colleague another woman into the room, they thought it was amusing that I felt the urgency to have an ultrasound. They minimized me to feel smaller than what I was already feeling. Both ladies are disgusting & should have more compassion. They discriminated me bc of my age & though the whole situation was entertaining. This was the Newport Hoag imaging center.

I returned in 6 months and the cyst had grown but was told not to worry that I probably don’t have cancer and to come back in 6 months again after the mammogram and ultrasound. The cyst had grown but is still very little so doing a biopsy is not on the table at this time he said. I’m a bit confused. I probably don’t have cancer?? Who says that?!! When a doctor refuses to do a test for you, tell them “okay, then I want you to write in my medical records that I have explicitly requested this test, but that you have denied it”. It’s rare a doctor would be willing to write such, they’d rather schedule what they personally think is a useless test, because it’s fuel for medical malpractice lawsuit if/when it shows up the test could have lead to an earlier diagnosis giving the patient a higher chance for survival. It shouldn’t have to come to that, but unfortunately some doctors don’t truly care about what symptoms a patient has, they just stay focused on statistics listed in a text book. Illnesses don’t care how old you are, if they want to attack you they do, and you deserve proper care if one ever hits you. Wishing good health to anyone that reads this. 🙏

Insane, unfair, but not shocking. I’m glad she’s bringing awareness to this issue, though. Would she have even progressed to stage 4 had they done that biopsy and caught it early? We can’t know, but either way, it’s unacceptable. I’m glad she’s in remission now. I hope she lives a long and healthy life and gets passed this immense hurdle. When a patient advocates for a biopsy/further testing, they shouldn’t be denied and turned away. I had a cancer scare when I was in my early teens and found a lump in my breast and got a mammogram; thankfully it turned out to be nothing. Cancer rates are skyrocketing and affecting people younger and younger. This isn’t pure genetics; this is environmental. Toxins in our food, our household products, our air, our environment in general.. You shouldn’t be turned away just because you don’t have a proven family history of cancer.

This wacko starts scaring me about my complaints saying oh we're going to have to do surgery and open you up find out what's going on in there. When it got to where I couldn't walk anymore or get rid of the pain she finally suggested a CAT scan and we found an 8 and 1/2 cm abdominal aortic aneurysm imagine that! Year's ago, back in the mid 1960s, my middle sister had a lump on her thigh. She was 11. The doctor said he was 99.9 percent certain it was a benign cyst; but added he was not taking any chances on that one percent chance it could be malignant. He removed it, and of course it wasn't. The point: ALL lumps must be removed and biopsied to be 100 percent certain. This poor young woman has been grievously harmed by negligent medical personnel, and should absolutely sue. Because unless there's a miracle, she is eventually going to die of breast cancer metastases. Let's call it exactly what it is: murder. I NEVER put my trust completely in doctor's and what they tell me about test results and such. I read all of my records, and test reports. In my own case, I was dumbfounded about what I was never told. Extremely serious condition's that have, over time, severely damaged my body because of being left untreated. Too much to tell entirely, here. Two words: FIGHT BACK!

10 years ago after I had my second son , one day I felt a little lump on my right side stomach. I went to see the doctor . They did ultrasound, told me nothing wrong . Few months later the lump was bigger and they did ultrasound again and told me nothing wrong , everything is normal . This was in CA when I found out . Few months later I moved to NM , my lumps had grown so big , I was so skinny . I eat so much but did not gaining weight but my lump kept growing , I didn’t feel pain or uncomfortable , but I knew something was wrong . I went to see the doctor and they did the same thing . Ultrasound again and told me probably my liver is just bigger than normal but they did not find any wrong to me . I told them I know something is wrong with me. So they told me ok they will do CT scan. That when they found out they see something big but wasn’t sure it was in my liver or in front of my liver so they did biopsy. Few weeks later I had a phone call while I was at work . The doctor told me I had cancer tumor . I had a big surgery to remove that tumor and also my 3 ribs . Now 10 years later I’m healthy but I have to wear my waist trainer everyday to support my stomach because I don’t have ribs on my right side . I hate it but that’s my life now . I glad I’m still alive and healthy to be here for my kids and family . But sometimes I do think if the doctor found out earlier then I don’t have to have my ribs removed and went through all that . It took them 2 hospitals from CA to NM a year to find out what happened to me . I’m glad I was pushing them to do something else instead of ultrasound. People know their own body . Anyone could make mistake .

Why does age matter when it comes to getting a checkup that might be life changing before it gets worse?

Probably money. Sadly I suspect if they allowed younger ones to get it, they might be able to catch it and treat it. That should be how things work. Since we live in an upside down world, they probably are making women get them at a later age because by then whatever possible cancer they have will no have to be treated and the docs will get paid more for the treatment. I hope I'm wrong.
