That's a really good question. I do not have an answer, but I suspect indefinitely. (I hope I am wrong, but I fear I am not.) No marginalized community should ever be obligated to show grace to someone when he or she transgresses against a member of that community. At the same time, I do not know what good alternative exists. Should a community just not forgive and hold onto resentment? I am not sure that helps anyone, either.

African Americans (or other minority groups like Asians or Latinos, for that matter) are caught in a conundrum in this case. When they are oppressed but respond with grace and forgiveness, that is misconstrued as weakness (emboldening racists to continue in their persecution). If they respond however by fighting fire with fire, then the oppressors will claim justification for their behavior. There is no middle ground unfortunately because the only element that is supposed to stand between the oppressor and the oppressed (system of law and order) is in itself broken. One only has to look at the unfortunate case of George Floyd to realize this. Yet, there is hope. The fact that racial discrimination is being exposed on a regular basis in popular media and the issue is now front and center in meaningful discussions in the seats of power will expose racism for what it truly is - a social cancer that has to be aggressively stamped out. Meanwhile, those of us who can speak must do so at every opportunity and if we are witnesses to any form of racial discrimination, we mustn't allow it to remain unchallenged.

This could've ended bad, she should be charged idk about laws but this isn't right.

Both liberals and conservatives can be racist. I think that was the point she was trying to make. I went to a very conservative university my freshman year in college then I transferred to a very liberal one. My professors were racist in both universities. They couldn't stop pointing out how smart and well spoken I was for a Black person. They didn't even pay attention to their racism while saying it.

This seems to be happening all the time now......something needs to be done, like arresting these idiots who make these false claims. That man is a saint for showing her grace but she deserves to suffer the consequences. Those are serious allegations that have serious consequences for his life so why shouldn’t she face the same? Plus, I’m glad they took the dog because she is obviously a terrible owner.

A Harvard educated birder who sits on the board of the Audubon society. But as awful as it was, she did not identify herself as white on the call. She was identifying the person she was arguing with. Unless we know for a fact that she meant for it to play out that way--with a murder of an innocent blackman-- we cannot put words in her mouth. We should learn from the graciousness of Mr. Cooper, who did take the high road and accept her apology. He sets a new standard that hopefully others will so we can try to move forward together, rather than tear the country apart as people have been doing this week in so many cities across the country. Violence is never the answer.

There were no fear, she knew exactly what she was trying to do.

She got in more trouble for choking the dog than for placing this man's life in danger.

But mental instability is not the cause of racism, and I don't think anyone was suggesting that. Mental instability merely prevents certain people from hiding the racism they always kept within.
