HIGHLY RECOMMEND - If you want more information about the wolf/raven relationship please watch this amazing video - Project Darkwolf gives you a deeper look with thorough research, as well as many other interesting wolf facts. • Ep.1 - The Wolf and Ra...
All life is linked in mysterious ways and relationships between different animals prove to benefit the species as well as ecosystems. Mutualism is a relationship between two species in which both species benefit. Symbiotic relationships between what appears to be unrelated species are absolutely fascinating.
Ravens and wolves have developed a mutually beneficial relationship in Yellowstone. It has been observed that ravens will favour wolves, and associate themselves in accordance with hunting patterns. Ravens often eat the wolves open carcasses.
Carrion is the decaying flesh of a dead animal that is visually unpleasant and smells foul. It is an important food source for many animals and plays a big role in ecosystems, for example, a coyote can feed on the dead flesh of an elk that wolves have left behind.
Carrion can be viewed as nutrient packages, it is an important food source for large carnivores and omnivores in most ecosystems but equally many invertebrates such as beetles and maggots eat carrion, which also plays an important role in recycling nitrogen and carbon in animal remains.
A biologist confirmed an intimate relationship between wolves and ravens in Yellowstone and found that the ravens found wolf killed prey within a few minutes after the kill was made. Biologists found that the average number of ravens present at a wolf kill is 30 - and up to 135 have been recorded to eat from the leftovers. Ravens are also known to circle above herds in the distance informing the wolves where they are and are sometimes known as ‘extra eyes and ears’. Where one species is weak the other is strong. Sometimes when the ravens fly, the wolves will follow. They can even lead wolves to animals carcasses that are too tough to penetrate. Wolves and ravens have also been observed to play with each other, the ravens dive at the wolves and then quickly fly away. Ravens may entice wolves to chase them. They also play with the cubs.
It is interesting to learn the relationships that form between different species, as the whole carcass is consumed and nourishes many species. Wolves give life to many more animals than they kill, and this is often overlooked. Wolf scavenger relationships are beneficial to both parties, importantly on behaviour and ecology.

Probably not, since wolves are shy and prefer to stay away from humans, and if they did plan a coordinated attack against.. Idk, some toddler, the entire group would just get wiped out by humans, which would only make nearby wolves and ravens even more wary of people, so either way, not really something to be fearing.

It always made me sad how bad of a rap wolves got, especially in fiction. They're almost always seen or written as evil, when in truth they're just living their lives and playing such a big role in keeping our planet alive and well without even knowing. Truly beautiful creatures.

In Jungle Book they are depicted well. In fact in most media they are depicted as social, but they are still carnivores so it's easy to see why sometimes they are "bad". I wouldn't wonder in the woods if a pack of wolves lived nearby. They are beautiful, but are still dangerous if you aren't part of their pack/social group.

So what I see here is mutal benefit between animals, bordering on the ravens accidentally taming wolves. This doesn't actually surprise me too much since some species of raven and crow can become as intelligent as 8 year old children and both of these are highly social animals capable of forming attachments outside of their own species easily and the ravens are smart enough to recognize wolf pups are young and can be easier to create bonds through play. This is now basically just a raven playing with its pet hunting proto-dog.

I cant remember if they were ravens but I saw a documentary on birds in the desert that would eat ticks off of many animals at watering holes and such. And not one animal would try to attack the birds. Absolutely incredible how there is a level of intelligence displayed from both animals involved.

First of all, a raven peck would do little to no damage to a grizzly bear, secondly wolves don’t usually go after other predators because the taste is nowhere near as good as the taste of herbivores like elk, but also because they don’t want to risk injury, you’d be surprised how many wolves a bear can kill in one sitting, so the risk usually isn’t worth it and wolves won’t go after a bear unless it’s a cub (which they usually only kill to remove competition) or unless it’s eating their food.

Never really considered the smaller invertebrates that benefit from carrion, yet it's an important point when considering ecosystems. Out of interest, did you come across any direct evidence of ravens guiding wolves to prey or carrion? At the time I was researching this topic, it was still theoretical - but I seem to remember there were some ongoing studies attempting to prove the link.

Hello, Thanks for your comment :). Dave Mech has studied wolves 60 + years and has discussed this relationship “It appears that the wolf and the raven have reached an adjustment in their relationships such that each creature is rewarded in some way by the presence of the other and that each is fully aware of the other’s capabilities.” ‘The Wolf: The Ecology and Behaviour of an Endangered Species’. Also, Bernd Heinrich of the University of Vermont - his research from Yellowstone Nation Park revealed that ravens were located near wolves up to 99.7% of the time. Ravens alerted wolves of nearby injured animals, like elk.

in nature, wolves have family. Wolves only form packs when in captive areas... Kind of like if you have to join a gang if placed in to jail. Please keep in mind, just as humans are diverse, so are animals. Therefore your question can never be answered. Just as there are humans who get along better with cats than they do with other humans... So why should all wolves be identical to other wolves? Some might like ravens more than they like other wolves. Until you sit and talk to each individual then you will never really know

Not completely beneficial relationship as ravens will play, sleep, anoy wolves that are apart of the pack its in, actually ravens will pick young cubs they want to hunt with and will train them. So yeah at first it was about both getting food but over time it's turning into a bond, just like humans did. We fed wolves because they helped us hunt and scare of predators but then over time they became are best friends.

Thanks for commenting! I have limited footage/images of ravens unfortunately. I’m pretty sure I’ve only used one or two images of crows. I will add something to the description! I should have added a title. I’m so sorry if I offended.
