Wolves chasing deer in northern Minnesota
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
This past year, we captured several instances of wolves chasing deer. Such footage is quite rare (at least for us!) but as we get more cameras our ability to capture and share footage like this is increasing, which is exciting!
We do not know what happened in any of these chases (i.e., did the wolf catch the deer or not?). We suspect that wolves were not successful in most of these instances because 1.) wolves are unsuccessful much more often than they are successful (lots of research shows this to be true), 2) the deer in the videos appeared to be moving well (except the one deer that was limping), and 3) the wolves in most of the videos did not seem to be moving fast enough to overtake the deer, and in many instances the wolves appeared to be lagging behind.
That said, wolves often rely on outrunning and outlasting their prey. Wolves are persistent and have excellent stamina allowing them to chase deer for miles while waiting for deer to become exhausted.
More often than not, however, wolves initiate a short chase before giving up because they realize they cannot catch the deer. That is, wolves realize it is not worth expending energy chasing prey they have no chance of killing.
Note: we want to extend a big thanks to our friends at @NatureSpy for donating cameras to our project that helped capture this footage!

Great footage of wolves chasing deer
Too many wolves in MN deer population in northern MN is down so much due to hard winters and predators.
beautiful.
Cool Video
Didn't see any signs that said deer crossing 🤔
Cool Video cool KZread 👍🏻
I like the way how wolves hunt in packs, because they're really social animals and they come up with a strategy of how to take down prey. 🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺🐺

Knows exactly what he/she is doing. Pack members split off and will redirect the prey by rounding it towards waiting pack members.
Weeee
Hope they got dinner
Hmmmm, was always told wolves only eat the weak and sick deer.

40% of all hunts fail in general which is the case with this video. When you are an apex predator, you do not want to spend excess energy on most creatures that can have a good chance of getting away. It is simple survival logic.

@@longforgotten4823 how on earth would you know if those hunts were successful or not?

@@Trythis837 because I follow the Facebook page where they analyze the interactions of the animals in the video. The researchers whom have been studying these Predator prey relationships for years pointed out that the wolves were not very into this chase and that the deer most likely had gotten away.

@@longforgotten4823 a person with limited understanding of how canines hunt would assume that.. not one single location in that video looked suitable to make a catch.. wolves like hounds do not stay seconds behind their quarry the whole chase.. ground conditions dictate the distance between predator and prey during a chase.. wolves pressure the game until they find themselves on an icy lake or in deep snow at which time they make their kill.. the likelihood of there ever being a close chase or kill at those camera locations is slim to none.. the conditions just don’t favour the wolf there..
Damn... them predator wolves chased that deer for many days n nights. U gotta be tired, but theyre hungry like a wolf, no ??
