Wollongong Fishing Barcrusher 615C - The Salty Badger

Absolutely horrible day out there today. Fishing was awful, but it was a chance to test the sound / video setup.
I think the audio is definately a big step up using a dedicated Microphone

Thanks for making this effort. Did you use an anchor winch in that sloppy weather? If so, how well did the anchor hold? Did you get a lot of water coming over the bow? Cameron

Hi Cameron. Thanks for the comment. I did anchor up. The key to Anchoring safely is to ensure you pay out enough line according to the depth and the conditions. Here I was in 20m of water. To anchor safely in these conditions I had 80m of line out. That’s a lot ! But it means that your boat rolls over the swell rather than having the bow pulled under the swell due to the anchor being directly under the boat. A good rule to remember. In calm waters your line should be 3x your depth. In really rough seas X5. I was at X4 here. Hope this helps.

Thank you. How do you know much anchor line is released when using an anchor winch? And, with all that anchor line out, does your boat then splay out wide in different directions with the anchor as the pivot point?

@@Camh1968 To answer the first question, you can splice a different coloured thin line into your anchor line at 10m intervals, or just wrap some waterproof tape if you cant get the splice in. As for the second point, if you have a steady wind and tide is going in the same direction then you should be pretty stable, but wind against tide, or a cross wind then yeah you are going to pivot a bit, but you will be much safer

@@thesaltybadger really interesting to know. Thanks a lot. I guess the many apps out there with wind direction and tide can be used to great effect here - to prepare the boat trip out in advance… Have you found fish catch rate increases or decreases with wind/tide in same direction - or visa versa?

@@Camh1968 there are so many variables in ocean fishing I could not tell you on wind and tide alone. There’s time of tide, water temp, moon phase just name a few.
