It's subconscious. They don't even realize they are doing it. Several years ago out at a bar I was sitting next a few 'kids' having a conversation and every few words out of their mouths was the word like. I politely butted in and pointed it out. At first they were mildly indignant at the audacity of me doing this, but once it was pointed out and they started paying attention to it their minds were blown. They immediately started trying to catch themselves after that. Now I'm not sure if they woke up the following morning continuing the effort. This also comes from the same place that they are compelled to finish every sentence with an upward inflection and an improper question mark. I also think it's a subconscious way of not leaving an opening for the other person to reply. I started paying attention to it years ago myself when a friend from Germany pointed out that us Americans "sound dumb" when talking because we try to fill every void in our speech with sounds like "uh" and "um" and "like".
