WMAR Magic Moments of Memorial Stadium special (1991)

After 38 seasons by the Baltimore Orioles and 30 by the former Baltimore Colts, Channel 2 News Scott Garceau memorializes the many magic moments of this great venue on East 33rd St. in north Baltimore, from the championship performances, great plays, personnel, and even a fan who had lived nearly his entire life in the surrounding Waverly neighborhood.

Wow. I never even knew this special existed. Good stuff. I spent my Wonder Years at the Grand Old Lady of 33rd Street, as it was called. Wonderful memoires of days and times gone by. I miss this place. I remember walking to the games because dad was always too cheap to park on the stadium lot and seeing those huge light towers when we got close. Even as a kid, seeing those towers sent chills down my spine. Thinking about it still does.

City College defeated Polytechnic by a 20-0 score in the final Thanksgiving Game ('92) played at Memorial Stadium to complete the second of back to back undefeated seasons in the MSA A Conference. Also City broke their 17 game losing streak to Poly (34-22) (The Play RB Paul Williams pass to QB Chris Smith) to seal the victory in the 99th game in 1987 to cap an unbeaten season and #1 ranking in the area. The next year was the 100th game in the series also won by City 20-7 with former City QB and then Mayor Kurt Schmoke throwing out the first pass. City also won the final game at Memorial ('97) playing inspired defensive football the entire game, sending retiring legendary coach Augie Waibel out with a loss (7-0). Personally , I was on the field at Memorial in 1978 in the 90th edition as a team manager / photographer for the Black Knight football team the last for City as an all male school. To watch those two schools battle under the lights made the game feel really monumental.

Just like old Yankee stadium, a ballfield now stands in its place, and the current iteration that looks just like any other ballfield in your typical city park honestly almost gives off a "Field of Dreams" feel when visiting today, especially given its distance from downtown. Thanks for sharing your memories!

I went to two O's games in 1990-91 and a Ravens game in '97. The more residential neighborhood gave it more of an intimate feel compared to the downtown stadiums today, but its sad being an O's fan understanding that they last played a World Series game in Baltimore in that building.

@@chrispierce1739 The Baltimore Stallions, who were originally the Baltimore CFL Colts. The Stallions played during the 1994 and 1995 seasons. This was an unsuccessful attempt to bring three-down football to the United States. Shar Pourdanesh was a standout All-CFL lineman.

@@armorybrunotjr.3204 I think the CFL would have had a home in Baltimore if not for Modell or another NFL team moving in. The Stallions had a dedicated fan base and on the field the team was successful. They had 2 Grey Cup appearances losing the first season and winning the Cup the final season in Baltimore.

@@chrispierce1739 they probably could have stayed here too but I don't know how that works if you got a NFL team. They had their own fan base
