Preview for upcoming Eyewitness News featuring Joel Daly
Promo for the Thursday, January 11th 1979 edition of AM Chicago featuring Sandi Freeman and Robb Weller
Commercial: A&P

WLS Eyewitness News bumper promo (voiceover by Al Parker)
Opening of Eyewitness News at 10pm (voiceover by Al Parker) featuring Joel Daly, Terry Murphy, Tim Weigel, and John Coleman. Top story is on "The Freeze of '79". John Coleman reports on the record-breaking 13 days of temperatures of zero or below expected to be met that evening.
Story on some high-rise burglaries at Belmont & Western, reported by Fred Villanueva. John Baggett, Nathaniel Havis, and Gregory Wallace were the suspects and all lived in an apartment at 1159 North Cleveland.
Jay Levine reports on John Wayne Gacy's first day in court, with courtroom sketches by Andy Austin. Joel Daly also reports that reputed mobster Michael Antonelli was convicted for his part in a bombing of a Lyons tavern in 1975.
16-year-old Jerry Kavinsky sentenced to 40 years for the murder of 11-year-old Roger Myers of Westmont, whose body was later found in a Willow Springs forest preserve. I wonder if he will still be getting out of jail when he's 56?
An Explosion rips through the Dolton Village Garage and fire ensues at 14020 South Park. Investigations are underway.
Commercial: Amoco
Commercial: The 1979 Lincoln Versailles
Commercial: Color Tile - "A Galaxy of Cosmic Values" (1978 Copyright)
Commercial: Jewel Food Stores & Jewel Grand Bazaar - "Poultry & Bananas Sale" - "Where People Like To Go" (voiceover by Joe Slattery)
This aired on local Chicago TV on Wednesday, January 10th 1979.
About The Museum of Classic Chicago Television:
The Museum of Classic Chicago Television's primary mission is the preservation and display of off-air, early home videotape recordings (70s and early 80s, primarily) recorded off of any and all Chicago TV channels; footage which would likely be lost if not sought out and preserved digitally. Even though (mostly) short clips are displayed here, we preserve the entire broadcasts in our archives - the complete programs with breaks (or however much is present on the tape), for historical purposes. For information on how to help in our mission, to donate or lend tapes to be converted to DVD, and to view more of the 4,700+ (and counting) video clips available for viewing in our online archive, please visit us at:

One minute in and I'm already awash in a sea of nostalgia. I used to live a block away from the Color Tile at 7100 W 79th Street. I could see it from my front door.

Wow! What a flashback The News, and those commercials!! I was in grade school when that cold front came through. But for a kid it was exciting, I was happy because all that snow wasn't going anywhere.

I remember that well! Our thermometer at home showed -27 on one of those days. I had installed dual batteries in my van, and was one of the VERY few people out on the roads. Went to my girlfriends house and tried to jump start her and many of her neighbors cars, most with no luck. Moved to AZ in 1982. Now, I freeze at anything below 70. I've become a major wuss!

Hated the blizzard of ‘79. I had to get to work every day. The blizzard of ‘67 was much more fun. No school. We built forts in the alley out of the mountains of snow the plows left. Then we’d run home and defrost with moms home cooking. Heaven on earth!

Wow! My dad always watched channel 7 news when we lived in Aurora. I remember the Big Freeze mostly because I have a recording from KQX mentioning the weather. The DJ said that the temperature was -26° in the middle of the afternoon and that he couldn't take it anymore. I also remember driving around on "square" tires until they warmed up and the flat spot defrosted.

When did A&P go out of business? Also, the annoyed man in the LaChoy commercial is the same man who gets annoyed in the right guard commercials, when some guy on the other side of his medicine cabinet greets him in the morning. He would call for his wife, Mona, at the end. Those commercials are on KZread.
