WKRP IN CINCINNATI 🧡 THEN AND NOW 2021

Ойын-сауық

WKRP in Cincinnati, a subtle masterpiece with 8 well-balanced characters that enjoyed 4 stellar seasons. This show was extremely authentic. Some of that goes to creator Hugh Wilson, who based the show upon his experiences working in ad sales at a radio station in Atlanta. WKRP didn’t pull great ratings, but did earn ten Emmy nominations and was heralded by disc jockeys for its accuracy.. This show had a cult following and enjoyed huge success in syndication, eventually warranting the spinoff The New WKRP in Cincinnati. The cast of WKRP, made this one of the most compelling sitcoms of the 70s and 80s. And with stand out episodes like Turkeys Away, w hich was actually not entirely made up, we’ll get to that later - This show remains a classic.
I’m your DJ Nostalgic Nick, and today we’re heading back to the station to see what the staff got into after the video tape filled up. That’s right, This show was videotaped instead of filmed, because rights to rock songs were cheaper for a taped show than for a filmed one. That’s Genius. If you enjoy this video, please give it a thumbs up for us, and subscribe to the channel so you don’t miss any of our premieres.

My favorite episode was “The Consultant” it was when Mrs Carlson hired a consultant to improve the station’s ratings. That’s when Andy has the staff act in a different personality. It was hilarious! Bailey was drug addict, Jennifer was a dumb blond when she actually runs the office and so on. I could watch that episode over and over again.

One of the most brilliant pieces of satire ever was the episode with Rev. "Little Ed" Pembrook offering things like Dead Sea Scroll Steak Knives and The World Is Coming to an End Lawn Furniture in exchange for your donation. I worked at a Christian radio station for a while and was both amazed and disgusted at how men who were supposed to be ministers of the Gospel were in effect nothing more than glorified pitchmen begging for money and getting it from poor widows who really couldn't afford those "donations". Little Ed captured their spirit perfectly.

I was an entertainer at Mammoth Mountain, California working at the Ski Lodge as the Pub Guitarist and Singer. One night Frank Bonner walked in and sat down, and when i took my break I went over to talk to him, not knowing it was actually HERB from WKRP...so I opened with, "You won't believe this, but you look just like Herb Tarlick of WKRP in Cincinnati!", and very much like Herb, he looked up and said. "...that might be because I AM Herb Tarlick!" There was no mistaking that voice. We became fast friends and went out skiing the next day. Because I was living there and Frank was new to the Mountain, I explained to him that if we took the tram to the peak, and if we got into a racers stance going down the slope, we could actually get enough speed to go up to the top of the next run without having to take the tram. Frank agreed. We had just gotten into the racing stance flying down the run when I looked over and Frank had bailed out. I already had too much speed to just bail, so I kept the course. When my skis suddenly angled up, and I realized that I was unintentionally doing an airborne back-flip. All the trees were upside down, up was down, and I had just enough time to realize there had been an avalanche and a big chunk of the run was just missing. With arms and legs going in every direction, I dropped about 30 feet and landed on my head. I just laid there for a minute when I heard Frank laughing!! He held out his hands to help me up...which was good...I was sure i was dead. So we skied several more runs before I realized my neck was pulling to one side....Turns out my neck was broken. Not good. Frank was very cool about spending some more time with me to make sure i was alright. If you can picture this...Herb Tarlick was in the room, and I was playing guitar and singing with a neck brace, in front of a room full of skiers that had come up for the week end and a good time. Not a good picture. I was told by the Manager that they loved what I was doing but the whole neck brace thing wasn't a good look for the first time skiers. Good point. There is more t the story with Frank, but this already looks like a small book...if you want the rest of it...drop me an email and I will send it to you. I like what you are doing...sorry for the length of this. The rest involves his most embarrassing moment ever...and I would rather talk with him first, before I repeat it...it's a very funny story.

WKRP is a great show. I was able to get my hands on a dvd collection which contains most, if not all, the original rock gems they used in the course of the show. All the characters were well acted and the writing was so funny. Best episode features "Scum of the Earth", the up and coming band with a penchant for chaos and destruction.

    3 жыл бұрын

@@larrylamphear8473 That's true, particularly for the first several years in which WKRP was released as video cassettes and later dvds. A company named Shout painstakingly got as much of the rights to the original music from WKRP as they could. I have rewatched many episodes on my set and so far, have not noticed any glaring examples of generic session studio music replacing the original songs. Music rights are very expensive for most published music. I have a friend, who with his wife, has done a lot of karaoke over the years and it's a somewhat similar situation. There are a few musical artists who won't allow the rights to their entire song catalogs to be released to karaoke music companies, or in some cases the rights are way too expensive to purchase. The three biggest examples he gave me were The Eagles, The Stones and The Beatles.

This show and the New WKRP- is very accurate to the wild experiences and challenges in radio... and each personality is quirky as ever. Yes- tis true. As a kid (born in 73), I watched these episodes (likely re-runs) and never thought one day I'd be on the airwaves and in Radio. Alas, here I am, and it is a joy and pleasure every Friday morning to be on air. Save and preserve Community Radio!! Keep it alive- it is an invaluable resource. A treasure to be kept in the world. I'm re-watching the eposides with new eyes as an adult and on air personality. Thanks for this video. Brought tears to see where everyone is now. ♡

@@ronoakes1131 Funny you say that as those two were my favorites also. I was 12 when that Who concert tragedy occurred and remember how that event really shook me. I felt REALLY touched when they did that episode. Fever's paranoia about "the phone cops" bit was one of the funniest skits I've ever seen!

In Concert was a very touching tribute to that horrible event on Dec 3, 1979 when 11 people were crushed to death and many were wounded before The Who concert. This episode brought tears to my eyes. The writers of this episode did an amazing tribute to this sad day in Cincinnati history.

The Consultant was great. For as cold as Momma Carlson seemed, she had a lot of feelings and respect for Jennifer and Bailey, so when he attacked the two of them as bimbos, it was like he had attacked her.

One of my favorite episodes besides Turkeys away , was Scum of the Earth , I liked when they did the show about the WHO concert. I couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next on the show . I bought the Complete Series on DVD a couple of years ago just so I could ENJOY it all over again !

A great show with one of the best ensemble cast's of all time. One of the best episodes was from the second season entitled "Jennifer's Home For Christmas". Everyone brings Jennifer a Christmas tree because they thought she would be all alone for the holidays. Very good little Christmas tale.

I was a kid in the 70s and tuned in every week to watch WKRP. My favorite episode was one where Johnny Fever's apartment was being fumigated for Lizards. I haven't seen it as an adult yet, but I remember that as being the funniest episode. Turkeys was my #2.

Favorite episode [Doing this as a script] Scene Opens: Johnny Fever is leaning back in his chair & relaxing while playing Pink Floyd's "Dogs" [from their "Animals" album] (Arthur Carlson walks into the D.J. booth & starts looking at record albums as he hears the dogs barking on the record with a confused look on his face, then he walks over towards Johnny Fever & waves his hand in front of his face, then Johnny Fever opens his eyes as Arthur Carlson walks to the turntable as the record is playing, trying to see what record it is, then tries to grab the record) [Johnny Fever] "Don't touch that!" [Arthur Carlson] (surprised)"I'm sorry I was just..dit...ahh.." [Johnny Fever] "gripping music, huh?" [Arthur Carlson] "Yeah, that's good alright ...what's the name of that orchestra?" [Johnny Fever] "Pink Floyd" [Arthur Carlson] "Ooh that's Pink Floyd" (He leans towards Johnny Fever) "Do I hear dogs barking on that thing?" [Johnny Fever] "I Do...' [Arthur Carlson] "Good aren't they (He pauses & looks at the back of the album & points) "Hey, there's a thing called "Pigs On A Wing", what does that sound like?" [Johnny Fever] "I don't do requests" (He pats Johnny Fever on the arm) "Well...just keep up the good work" [Johnny Fever] Givin' it all I got... (Arthur Carlson put down the album cover & starts walking out, then turns) So I see. (He opens the door & walks out) Scene Ends. Classic episode, reminds me of my teen years.

Unfortunately, that scene gets hacked to death in the more recent reruns and video releases due to problems licensing the Pink Floyd music. It's a total shame considering that is far and away the most popular "WKRP" episode ("Turkeys Away").

OK,maybe WKRP was inspired by a station in Atlanta, but the origin story matches WKRQ in Cincinnati where I grew up. WKRQ was a classical station that, one Sunday morning, suddenly became a rock station, ala Johnny Fever.

My dad was a rock DJ in Detroit, WRIF, in the 70s and early 80s. Me and my sister grew up in radio stations. This show was on the air at tha time, and we always watched it with my did. He was a single parent. The show was pretty accurate. To an extent. A compressed and more dramatic account so to speak. My dad had a big rock and roll afro, and his shirt buttoned down with a gold Scorpio emblem on a necklace. This was the disco era. So he was into motown, rock, but went to discos and cool parties. It always felt cool when we'd be out shopping and radio listeners would recognize him from live broadcasts and promotional events, and want to meet him. Sometimes he'd put me and my sister in commercials if it called for children's voices. Once we were cruising in his 1970 Cadillac, and our commercial came on the air. We felt really proud and like a brief moment of fame. Dad taught me how to cue up records and start commercials on tape. Sometimes if he had a stretch of music, what you heard on the radio was little boy me who picked Kiss, Boston, Fleetwood Mac, RamJam, etc. Great times. I miss the 70s and 80s.
