    Didn't know this was going to happen but, when I heard the theme tune, I smiled. I smiled because of a memory from the late 70s, early 80s. That is so freaking unlikely, that it is worth writing down.

    There are multiple moments in that staff meeting sequence where it inches towards being overly heartwarming or even syrupy, and then there's a perfectly timed joke to cut against it and "reset" the scene. Stellar writing, impeccably performed.

    I am so very glad to be able to see these old WKRP shows on You~Tube. They still have a way of turning my bad moods and even bad days into better ones. This was absolutely true and real comedy. Nothing at all today can compare with these old shows. These actors of today just try acting funny and look more stupid than anything. Thank you You~Tube and the uploaders!!!

    11Stucat, I really doubt that. MTM was known for the wide creative latitude it gave shows. Grant Tinker’s philosophy was to get really talented people and then get out of their way and let them do wht they do best. Regardless, MTM had no control over either the show’s scheduling or cancellation. Those are entirely network decisions. CBS did it to other popular shows and would do it again. I often think that television executives often create issues and make decisions to justify their jobs.

  • @inkyguy

    @inkyguy

    11Stucat, in fact, in an interview creator High Wilson stated that it was, in fact, a new CBS executive, Harvey Shepherd, who decided to scrap the show. He decided to keep "Alice" and axe "WKRP" instead. He left CBS four years later saying that the pressure to maintain ratings was too great.

  • @inkyguy

    @inkyguy

    Edward Bliss, yes, indeed. I just commented on another video yesterday that the casting was absolutely superb. According to Hugh Wilson, the creator, CBS’s only requirement be that Gary Sandy be the lead. Other than that they could cast whomever they wanted. They made it an ensemble cast show to which Gary Sandy did not object at all.

    I think the creators must have consulted with the then-owners of WEBN. The transmitter on the hill in the intro was WEBN's, and the building used in establishing shots as the WKRP HQ is the building on Hyde Park Square where WEBN was located. I was always half expecting to hear gag ads for Tree Frog Beer or the DeLorean Snowmobile. The latter fake ad was recorded and put in rotation about 20 minutes after John DeLorean was busted for smuggling the white powder which was insanely popular at the time. Yeah, his attorneys were successful in defending him on the basis of entrapment, but the fact he was an idiot remained.

    I know this is slightly off topic but watching this reminded me of something that happened during the run of the Seinfeld show. They had Gordon Jump appear as George's boss at PlayNow for 2 episodes I believe. In the entire run of that brilliant show, they didn't make many mistakes, but letting that guy go so early was a big one! They could have gotten a ton of mileage out of that and Jump was hysterical, far funnier than the boss from the industrial smoothing company, that's for sure.
