Fun fact: WKRN in Nashville and WATE in Knoxville both have been owned by the same broadcasting group(s) since 1994. WKRN was owned by Young Broadcasting starting in 1989. WATE was then owned by Young Broadcasting starting in 1994, making Nashville's and Knoxville's ABC affiliate sister stations. From 1994 to 2013, the two were both owned by the same broadcasting company. Through a reverse merger, WKRN and WATE were now owned by Media General, from November 2013 to January 2017. However, Memphis affiliate WATN, formerly WPTY, also joined Nashville and Knoxville in November 2013 following Media General acquiring of Newport Television. Since January of 2017, after Nexstar acquired Media General, WATE in Knoxville, WKRN in Nashville, and WATN in Memphis are all owned by Nexstar.

Actually, there was a time in 2010 where Gray was going to buy out Young Broadcasting and it’s stations during its bankruptcy. Gray bought KWQC from Media General after the Nexstar merger in order to allow Nexstar to keep WHBF. As of 2020, Gray has a presence in Tennessee in Knoxville, Memphis, and the Huntsville market which pokes into Tennessee, as well as Bowling Green, KY, in which that market hangs down into Tennessee.

@@rileysmith9843 Prior to WATN in Memphis going to TEGNA and WREG in Memphis going to NexStar, WMC was with Raycom and the only other station in Tennessee owned by Raycom was Knoxville's Fox affiliate WTNZ 43. Then, after WATN going to TEGNA and WREG going to NexStar, WMC became sister stations with Knoxville's CBS affiliate WVLT and Knoxville's CW affiliate WBXX. In fact, the big 3 in Knoxville (WATE-ABC, WVLT-CBS, WBIR-NBC0 and the big 3 in Memphis (WATN-ABC, WREG-CBS, WMC-NBC) are all sister stations with the other. Nexstar has WATE and WREG, Gray has WVLT and WMC, and TEGNA has WBIR and WATN.

@@rileysmith9843 As for Fox affiliate WTNZ in Knoxville, they don't have not had their own news broadcast since 1998. The other three (WATE, WVLT, WBIR) have aired their news at 10 O'Clock called "Fox 43 News at 10. First WVLT had it in 1998, the WATE eventually aired their news until 2011, and now WBIR has their news on it. Additionally, Fox 43 added a two hour news broadcast weekdays from 7am to 9am in 2011 after WBIR got it. And in 2017, they added a 30 minute news broadcast weekdays from 6:30pm to 7pm. Although the big 3 in Knoxville aired their news broadcasts at some point since 1998, WTNZ never was owned by the same companies as either WATE, WVLT, or WBIR.

WKRN (ABC) in Nashville and WATE (ABC) in Knoxville have both been owned by the same parent company/companies since 1994. WKRN once used the slogan "On Your Side" as shown at 3:13, which is what WATE now uses. And around that time when WKRN used the "On Your Side" slogan, WATE used the "Coverage You Can Count On" slogan, which is what WKRN now uses themselves.

I'm not so sure about Memphis and Knoxville, but when you think about it, Nashville and Knoxville are not very different. They have more similarities than differences. In fact, I have said for so many years that Knoxville is Nashville's little brother.

WKRN was never owned or operated by LIN Media. WZTV and WUXP were the LIN-owned stations, and WNAB was the LIN-Operated station (then-owned by Vaughan Media). If LIN did own it, they would have been in violation of FCC rules, which say a station group can only own up to two stations in a market, if it has 8 or more owners/9 or more separate stations.
