    Margaret Hamilton did a SENSATIONAL job. Fully half of her footage was cut out. The studio was afraid her performance was SO POWERFUL, it would terrify the young viewers. Years later, Ms. Hamilton reprised her role on an episode of Sesame Street. That episode was banned after only 1 showing. Because parents reported how their pre-schoolers were terrified. So, Mr. Rodgers invited her onto his show. To let the kids see she was really just a person. An actress, playing a role. That in real life she was a kindly old lady. Like a loving grandmother. I grew up seeing her as the snoopy neighbor, on "Sigmund and The Sea Monsters". Saturday mornings. EVERY time I hear Judy sing her signature song, I CRY. And I am a grown man of 65 !

    Andrew Lloyd Webber (yes, the man who created the stage versions of the Phantom of the Opera, Cats, etc.) created a full length stage musical of this movie in 2011, and this scene was included. The wicked witch and the winkie guards had a big dance number and the witch had a reprise of her solo Red Shoes Blues (written specifically for the musical); it was like a big celebration of Dorothy being captured. After the number, the witch took Dorothy to her "prison" and gave her the "See that? That's how much longer you've got to be alive" spiel , after-which Dorothy would sing a short reprise of Over the Rainbow. There wasn't a jump to the three friends finding the castle, Dorothy would sing the reprise and then here would be a transition to the three friends finding the castle . en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wizard_of_Oz_(2011_musical)#Musical_numbers

    Great job! Thank you for making this. I think this is so much better than what made the final. I really wish they had not deleted this and the celebration/Wicked Witch Is Dead reprisal at the end. It's somewhat interesting how different eras will view the most minute of things differently. Two hours is a normal movie run time today, not at all strange. By deleting these scenes, I feel the movie never reached its full potential even though it is a beloved classic. As a kid, I of course didn't notice it, but as an adult, I realized how much the film lacks cohesion in so many areas. Having researched it, now I know why. In your other documentary, you mentioned using animation to complete the lost scenes. In today's world of CGI, this is entirely possible to create. I don't know what studio would bother to take on the task, but I would absolutely buy a version that re-added in these lost scenes and musical numbers using CGI animation to recreate the footage.

    I'm going to play devil's advocate here, and say that I can understand why this was cut. In one way I think including a reprise of the song at this darkest moment in the picture is an inspired idea, showing us Dorothy thinking fondly of home so-to-speak, trying to find some comfort in her situation. However on the other hand as she is crying at the same time as she's singing, I found it rather hard to make out what she was singing beyond the first phrase or so. Also, Judy acts this scene so well, I think very very few actors/actresses can cry convincingly, and for her to do it at such a young age shows the remarkable extent of her talent. But she does act this scene so well that it's actually a little bit upsetting, at least I've always found it so. Sounds daft given it's a fantasy story, but to me her fear and distress are so palpable. I can therefore understand not wanting that scene to overrun given it was a childrens' film. Or am I just a big softy? haha

    The cut scene that I'd really love to see is the "rainbow bridge" sequence, in which the witch creates an enchanted rainbow reaching from Dorothy's tower to another and lures her out onto it by showing her an apparition similar to the Auntie Em crystal ball appearance of her three friends in the opposite window urging her to come to them. There is a deadly mass of thorns and brambles under the bridge that Dorothy is in danger of falling into when the witch makes the bridge start to disappear under her feet, but the ruby slippers glowingly come to life and carry her over quickly enough to reach safety in time. I don't know if it was ever shot, or cut from the script before that point, but it's certainly a creative scenario.

    @MrJamieMurph4141969

    WOW, I’ve never heard of THAT deleted scene! That I definitely have to see sometime, if it’s ever available! You know, for so long I could never understand how the witch was able to quickly replace Auntie Em in the crystal ball, once Dorothy responds to her aunt’s call. Then after I was grown up and saw the horror movie Sometimes they come back-the scene where the one ghost punk, or greaser, imitates the dads voice when he calls for Jim’s(Jimmy’s) young son Scotty, and Scotty realizes it was a trick(it was not his dad calling him, but the punk disguising his voice), that’s when I thought,”Hmm..maybe that’s what the witch of the west does in wizard of Oz when Dorothy hears and sees aunt Em in the crystal ball, then the witch cackling like crazy seconds later-the witch may have “decoyed” herself as Aunt Em so as to play a sick joke on Dorothy.) Possible and plausible, considering the witch’s evil supernatural powers, but I think what really happens is the crystal ball first enables Dorothy to hear and see her aunt back home in Kansas calling her while looking for her, and then once Dorothy desperately responds to her calls, is when the witch plays her sick mind game on Dorothy.

    The tearful reprise of "Over the Rainbow" track was NOT for playback. It was recorded on set (as you can hear the clapper and Victor Fleming saying softly "action") to a softly played live piano accompaniment. That live take would have had a post scored orchestra added to it. Because of the emotion in the scene it would have been difficult to lip synch to that track.

    I think it would have been too depressing to have kept the scene of the imprisoned whimpering Dorothy singing Over the Rainbow, a bit too overly sentimental and a bit tragic on Dorothy's part, you have to be careful not to make the Characters come across as pitiful & Powerless, the deeply emotional scene might have been seen as self pity, not in keeping with the rest of the Movie. She doesn't really need to be singing as well.

    @@mikep5335 You have to understand it from a dramatic perspective; in Kansas, she's singing wistfully of an unknown place she'd like to visit. In Oz, she's singing specifically about home, where she knows who's there and that she is loved. It shows her development thus far in that she's already learning that her heart's desire isn't "any further than my own backyard." A friend of mine in Canada co-created a musical, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," in 2000. It was more closely based on the book than the MGM movie was, but he used the same device of Dorothy singing about how dull and gray Kansas was in an early scene, and later when she's the Wicked Witch's prisoner, she sings a lament about how home is very special to her. In both scenarios, the precise point is to have the audience not get "depressed," but to sympathize with Dorothy, who they've been traveling with the whole time.

    This is not completely accurate! MGM was one of the few movie studios who saved all of the deleted scenes and song and dance numbers from all of their movies! I have done my well-documented and reliable research on my favorite movie of all time! Filming began in early 1938 on 27 soundstages at Meto-Goldwyn- Mayer Studios located in Culver City, California. All of the songs were recorded in 1938 for the movie! The Technicolor scenes in Oz were filmed first and the sepia tone Kansas scenes were filmed last. Director King Vidor directed many of the scenes in Oz and all of the scenes in Kansas. He should have been given credit. Both King Vidor and Victor Fleming directed the movie! I was born and raised in the United States of America. I don't mean to be unkind! However, the narrator is overbearing and loud. His narration is too long! His editing and reconstruction are good. However, it could have been much better! A professional would have done a much better job! Noen of the footage should have ever been deleted!
