Wizard of Oz Graves / Mayor of Munchkin City in Hayward

Charlie Becker was the dwarf actor who played the Mayor of Munchkin City in the classic Hollywood movie, "Wizard of Oz." He is buried in the Lone Tree Cemetery in Hayward, a portion of the San Francisco Bay Area.
Jeff takes this episode of History Hunters to the gravesite, tells you a little bit about Charlie and his actress wife, as well as show you the grave of William Dutton Hayward, the founder of Hayward and the final resting place of Robert McDonald, Congressional Medal of Honor recipient who faced off with Crazy Horse at Wolf Mountain, Montana on Jan. 8, 1877.

Growing up in Hollywood with family working in the industry I'm always interested in how supporting actors supported themselves outside of acting. They didn't earn enough acting so they usually had side gigs. Margaret Hamilton worked in film and TV before and after WofOz. Though she was a teacher early on, she later worked in TV. You can see her as the neighbor in One Day at a Time and other sitcoms.

Soooo cool. I was fortunate enough to be in the Music Circus production of The Wizard of Oz in Sacrament in 1981 with Kathy Rigby starting as Dorothy. And I got to be both the Mayor of the Munchkin City AND a Flying Monkey. Such a seminal film that will always have a special place in both my nightmares and my heart!

@@jbenziggy As you said in your video, I think you are the first to visit his grave. I had no idea he was there. I visited two other munchkins on my road trip last year that I still haven’t edited and shared. I’m hoping to make a trip back up to Sacramento this spring to visit my brother. I also have a cousin in Fresno I want to visit. If I’m able to make the trip I will let you know. It would be fun to do a collaboration video together if possible. I’m turning 70 years old this year, so I’ve decided to cut way back on visiting gravesites in the future, but I’m sure I will occasionally go grave hunting. Mostly though I think it’s time for me to start enjoying my retirement while I am still 6 feet above ground, rather than spending all my time filming and editing videos lol. 😂

I was scared really bad. I am pretty sure I was 5 years old and we were watching it on our B&W TV. So this would be back in 1959. Now I watch the movie about 3 or 4 times a year since I recorded it a couple of years ago. It was such a great movie. MGM took their special effects to the next level. Crew members mention this especially with the tornado where they put extra money and thought into it. Look at Warner Bros Special effects of the same period,, kinda hoaky in comparison,, but worked nonetheless.

Another terrific video J&S ! Wow what a nice spot that looks to be. Have you ever wondered how many years it might be since some of those older graves have been visited by family members. We get forgotten pretty quickly eh

Cemeteries can be quite beautiful and peaceful. There can also be a lot of history as well.

Very interesting, I guess growing up with a mother that always took care of cemeteries in our town and still at 83 takes care of them and the town historical society. My wife's family is all in Bonaventure cemetery in Savanah Georgia where we'll end up, if you ever get done to Savanah you'll have to spend a week or more to see all the history in that town. Great video 👍

Mornin Jeff, yes sir speaking of the Wizard of Oz, Mervyn Leroy who produced/directed the 1939 epic flick is laid to rest at Forest Lawn in Glendale Ca. (perhaps you have covered this topic as well) however if I remember correctly I was able to gain access to his grave behind a usually "locked gate"! At the age of 65 I still watch the Wizard of Oz on different formats altho quite a difference today with modern technology as what it was like gathered with my 4 siblings around a small B & W tv......that was in the 60s. Thank you for another grand video presentation! Greetings from down south here in Arizona

Unintentional laughter from me this morning. Every time you say he was 3 foot 9, in my head I keep filling it in with a lyric by Joe C who was also little person who used to sing with Kid Rock. Joe C was 3 foot 9 and anybody who was around when Kid Rock first made it big probably knows the rest.

Thanks for your Sunday vlog Jeff & Sarah! It has always amazed me how this movie has lasted so long from generation to generation. The wicked witch always scared me the most with her flying monkeys. I had to back up the story when you first mentioned Robert McDonald's death date of '82 vs '22... Great and informative research too - thanks for all the work you do to present this information each week.

The Wizard of Oz was filmed entirely within the boundaries of MGM Studio in Culver City. Nice that some of the cast is also buried in culver City. Growing up, I always looked forward to Oz being broadcast on TV about once a year. I admit the film had scary things , i. e. the flying monkeys , and the "oo-EE-oo..." guards were a little scary to me. My grandmother, who was prominent in Old Hollywood and lived a block away from MGM had a friend in the cast of this film, but I never heard her mention it. After my grandfather died my grandmother remarried and years later I read the newspaper announcement about her 2nd wedding. several famous people were in attendance including "Flo Ziegfield's Billie Burke" (Glenda the Good witch of the North)!
