Spell Substitution is much better than being a budget sorcerer because you tap from your whole spellbook. It enables wizard to finally use the really niche spells that are way too situational to prepare (unless you have a lot of information gathering of whats ahead). now the wizard no longer needs to prepare the out-of-encounter spells. You dont have to lock a slot for Locate, better have another Fireball

yeah that felt like a very silly segment. "why not be a sorcerer" and have a fraction of a fraction of the spell choice? prepared casters already have amazing "big picture" versatility, and spell substitution cranks it up to 11.

Agreed. When (for whatever reason) you find yourself needing a particular spell for the next few encounters, you swap a spell. If you have perfect knowledge of what you will encounter, no need. Most games I’ve been in the opportunity to research an opponent or challenge is limited.

Yep he missed the main advantage of spell substitution. It isn't RP, even though that works. The main reason to take this is in the case where you walk into a dungeon and have the wrong spells prepared for the monster types/challenges in the dungeon. I have seen situations where the party had to rest until the next day so the wizard could juggle his spells to match the dungeon. Its not earth shattering but none of the Arcane thesis are but its pretty much like a wizards insurance policy. Instead of losing a day, you lose an hour fixing your spell list (ie: swap 6 spells).

I'm surprised he didn't mention the obvious combo at 4th level. 1. For 2 actions, cast Magic Weapon on your staff. This makes it a +1 striking weapon (+1 to hit, +1d8 blunt damage). 2. For a free action cast Bespell Weapon on your staff for the extra +1d6 blunt damage. 3. For your final action cast Hand of the Apprentice. You throw your staff with a mighty 2 handed overhead throw at a target within 500' using your base spell attack roll. I'm not sure if the +1 rune helps in this situation or not. You are attacking with the weapon but it is a spell attack? Regardless, If you manage to hit with that attack you will do 2d8+1d6+INT (probably +4) blunt damage or 4d8+2d6+2(INT) on a crit. For a 1st level spell, a feat, and a focus spell. At level 4. Just don't miss.

"You deal the weapon's damage as if you had hit with a melee strike". If it doesn't work like you said, I'm totally house-ruling it. As a bonus, crits also get you the weapon's crit specialization effect! Unfortunately, I don't think the +1 rune helps with hitting in the first place, but it's still a great combo.

I wish Hand of the Apprentice was AUTOMATICALLY given to Universalists. It's stupid that it's not. Not sure it's worth a feat to get? Haven't tried it, though. But if you make True Strike your staff bonus spell and are willing to wait a turn (or preo before combat), then you can cast it for 1 charge to get two attack roles and double your chances at a crit, with no cover or concealment penalties. Not half bad.

Been playing D&D decided to give Pathfinder a shot and I’m almost always some form of caster. It does really suck that you have to prepare spells into slots and wizards kinda seem a lot weaker at the first couple levels but with all the stuff they get it seems like it balances out mid and higher play when it really matters. Awesome guide and really is making me excited to try out a few builds. Still a little confused because I don’t know the full terminology yet and what’s realistically possible but I love the idea of the staff crafter machine gun wizard, necrotic debuffer, “no you” counter speller, or some combo of these. Thanks!

Nonat, I think you missed one detail about Staff Nexus that will make you like it more. For something like spell blending, you sacrifice 2 spells to get a spellslot 2 levels higher. For Staff Nexus, yes, you can sacrifice a spell of higher level for more charges on the staff, BUT you can also sacrifice multiple low level spells for enough charges to cast a higher level spell from their staff. I know that's poorly explained so here's an example: at lvl 8, if a wizard has a Greater Staff of Fire, they can sacrifice a 1st and a 2nd level spell to be able to cast a 3rd level spell (fireball or flaming sphere), whereas a spell blending wizard would need to sacrifice 2 1st level spells for an additional 3rd level spellslot. So staff nexus actually becomes a more flexible form of spell blending, since you can still "trade up" just as you can "trade down". The major weakness to staff nexus though is that crafting your staff is expensive, you need to know all the spells on a staff when you craft it, and you're highly limited in the spells you can cast by your staff. This is countered though by being able to craft your staff into ANY kind of staff without the formula, so if you have the money, and your campaign goes high enough, you can get that staff of the Magi, and cast that 9th level "Summon Dragon" up to 2 additional times by sacrificing 3 lvl 6 spells, or even 1 additional time by sacrificing 3 lvl 3 spells. It's much, MUCH more flexible to get additional castings than with spell blending, but the staff's "spell list" is your major constraint. I really hope you see this Nonat, I think this will change your mind about staff nexus.

Another Great Video Nonat. I too will miss these types of videos. Have you considered going back and doing class addendum videos for classes that have gained feats and/or sub-classes from other source books? How about spell analysis/alchemy formula analysis videos? One thing I'd really like to see someone do is build/play style guides for different classes. Maybe take a class and do a breakdown of how it's sub-classes inform play style, what feats (Skill and Class) would enhance or be beneficial for that style and maybe even what Archetypes would complement the styles? That sounds like a lot of work/research but also really interesting.

Hey Nonat slight disagreement on difficult Terrain. Action economy is the name of the game, and any thing you do to deprive an enemy of an action is 1 less attack they can do to you. It’s better if you can deprive multiple enemies of action. A very mobile party could really take advantage here. It’s not flashy, but it is very effective.

Regarding to some things like conceal spell, bespell weapon, counterspell, second chance and other more low profile feats I think Nonat needs experience playing a wizard. These feats are almost mandatory in certain builds. Im Dming a lv 20 adventure and the wizard just humiliated a Pit fiend by not letting he casts. They managed to kill the combat in two rounds and the 10th level spells that that gigantic and cruel devil was trying so hard to cast and destroy the life of the entire party was denied for a wizard with the right feats.

I came up with a fun little feat combo for my wizard in age of ashes, meant for people who like summoning creatures (like me) First turn: Cast Summon normally, for 3 actions Second turn: Using effortless concentration as a free action to sustain a summon, cast a second summon spell for 3 actions Third turn: Use effortless concentration again to sustain one spell, sustain the other spell for 1 action, use quickened casting as a free action to reduce the number of actions for summon to be 2 instead of 3, cast summon Turn four: Spend all 3 actions sustaining summons, or use effortless concentration and 2 actions to sustain and leave 1 action for movement or recall knowledge or whatever 1 action you would like. I found that this would allow someone to have multiple summoned creatures at a time for example a level 20 wizard with archwizards might casting summon dragon could summon two adult gold dragons and an adult black dragon giving 2 actions to each because of their minion trait

16:20 I actually have a level 5 Spell Blender Conjurer Gnome and it is insane... counting his innate spells, the guy has 12 Cantrips prepared at any given time. He also has an extra cast of his highest level summons along with his Bond recast (which is *very* impactful). As long as you intend to play the character into mid-to-higher levels (5 or higher), Spell Blending is a clean win. 23:57 Hand of the Apprentice is definately not the only reason to play a Universalist... Universalists can drain the bonded item/familiar a numer of times per day equal to the highest level spell they can cast; so a 7th level Universalist is getting to use Drain Bonded Item four times a day (and so on). That is very significant. 30:24 Actually, Steady Spellcasting saves the spell on a 15, so that is a 30% chance... still not great, but better than you suggested.

I think you might want to rethink the usefulness of some of those feats by considering multiclassing. A rogue with the wizard archetype would likely have good skill in both Deception and Stealth. A fighter that took Wizard archetype could cast Shield and get an extra d6 Force damage on the following attacks. Yes, it is feat intensive. Still, some feats are best used when you are mixing classes.

You missed two benefits with the Nexus Staff wizard. First, they get to put an extra cantrip AND 1st level spell on their staves. Second, staves get their own spells they know. Together, this means is that the staff you create will have three 1st lvl spells, plus 2 per higher level. Staves have to have a "theme." But the extra 1st level from Nexus does not. Oh, and second-and-a-half, actual staves (not the starter makeshift one) get their own charges per day, too. So what this gives players is a wizard that can effectively know *SIX* 1st lvl spells, and five to six for each level above. Now, you can still only USE a number of spells equal to the slots plus charges in the staff. But you effectively get on the spot Spell Substitution for half of them from charges in your staff. Now couple that with Universalist's Bond Object refreshing 1 spell per level instead of once per day and you get a mage that has an incredible amount of diversity in what they can do. They aren't any "stronger" than other builds. But they get A LOT of leeway on how they spend spells and charges.

So for exemple if im a 11 level universalist wizard and i use drain bonded item for my 6th level spell, i get an use of drain bonded item for my 4th level, then from that on my 2nd level. Now I use it on my 5th level, then i get a use for 3rd level and 1st level, and so one and so forth. At high levels, when you have power word stun, maze, slow ,haste etc. this is so good.

They'd be trickier but what about a series of ancestry guides now the class guides are done for the moe? They're more nebulous but ancestries have definite strategies in their feats.

I'll elaborate a bit more here, but other people have made great points as well, I just want to add three things. 1: **Is spell substitution gonna help you in combat ?** Answer: Yes, it absolutely will.... indirectly. Exemple: Let's take a standard unknown dungeon. You go in with your standard array of spells picked, and now realize its filled with nasty oozes, plants and trolls (potentially mind controlled by the plants. You decide to spend immediately 30 minutes to shift spells around to have a heavy ref targeting array of spell, with some light will targeting. Let's say 33% of your spells were fort targeting, by deducing the theme of the dungeon and the kinds of creatures you'd encounter there, and making a guess as to what their strong and weak saves were (and as a wizard your RK checks should be high enough to make this a very educated guess) you've made all of your spells much more adequate to your combat situation, and since you are targeting the correct defense, they are now anywhere between 10 to 50% more effective (because of the disparity in strong vs weak saves in monsters). 2: **Spell edging**: I refer to spell edging as the practice of hyperfocusing on a timely basis for which spells you have at the moment. Most casters I see always prepare a bit of utility to go along with their main combat spells, detect magic, light, read aura, etc. etc. Spell substitution wizards laugh at this. Light? Cast it and swap it out. Read aura ? If you need it, swap it in. Since you will almost never not be in a situation where you can have the perfect spell if you take some time, you don't need to try to prepare the perfect spell in advance, you just need to make sure that it's in your spellbook. 3: **Spell dumping**: Here I refer to the practice of swapping out spells at the end of the day to make travel more efficient. It's the end of the day, you've been light on your spellcasting, you have a lot of spell slots left? Use them! Cast 4 alarms, cast 3 glyphs of warding, shape some stone to make a house, protect your camp from hostile divinations, make the place weather controlled, learn comprehend language to decipher that hard to break scroll, etc. etc. etc. There is so much you can do if you remember to do it. You will almost never get attacked during rest because frankly it will be so discouraging to your GM to try it that they might very well decide not to.

NB: You can also use the flexible caster class archetype with a spell substitution wizard to be the ultimate flex caster. 3 spells per spell level, all of them signature, you can swap out any of them within 10 minutes. Longstrider level 2, cast it, swap it, Max level mage armor, cast it, swap it, contingency? Cast it, swap it, etc. etc. I'm very excited to play it in Blood Lords!

Minor correction on Spell Blending. You don't get a spell slot 1 level higher, it is of up to 2 levels higher. Meaning the level 5 Wizard can sac 2 1st level spell slots for s 3rd instead of a second. (and then 2 more firsts for a 2nd... if you are a specialist... but you are better off just using a 1st for 2 more cantrips at that stage.)

A note on the conjuration wizard focus spell, sure it's one action, but you also need to sustain a spell which is also 1-action, limiting your next round to 1 other action, and the +1 isn't that great, and depending on the party composition, and GM choice it could be irrelevant, like Bard's inspire courage is also a +1 status bonus to attack rolls, and if the GM decides to not attack the summon, the +1 AC isn't doing anything. Then there's also the whole round from when you summoned until you can boost it, if the enemy has AoE's they can include the summon and possibly destroy it before you can buff it. I was in a Fists of the Ruby Phoenix campaign and I tried summoning, and it worked for 1 combat, but after that it went from meh to outright losing my actions and spells. Part way through book one I asked the GM to let me switch some spells and my wizard school which he allowed. I became so much more effective buffing my party members instead of summoning new weaker ones, though I did know some of the wildlife enemies that we came across because of my knowledge of the summoning spells (black scorpion, is nice but a 10th level slot also has time stop). Maybe it works better at lower levels of play since the creatures are also closer in level to the player instead of being 3/4 levels below as is the case in higher levels

I thought the same thing, but you don't have to sustain it! Nowhere in the spell does it say "sustained". Normally spells (like bless for example) have "Duration: Sustained up to 1 minute", but Augment Summoning just says "For the duration of it's summoning."

NEXUS STAFF you become part of your staff. You can cast spells from your staff without needing to be touching it. Tie it behind the barbarian and heal or abjuration protect him without ever needing to see him. Give staff to familiar See thru familiar Fire all ranges of YOUR spells from familiar Position as YOU COUNT AS YOUR STAFF. Always get new staffs to get more charges and new better spells. MIGHT AS WELL BE A POKEMON NOW.

Spell Substitution becomes god tier when you want to play a prepared "silver bullet" caster. As is known (since DnD 3.5 at the very least), wizards become the most powerful class when they can gather info and prepare for fights beforehand. But that heavily depends on whether the GM allows players to actually get some useful knowledge beforehand. My GM never really liked to give us info beforehand. I assume he thought it more dramatic and... fun... when we learn about what's happening only when it's already happening. With that GM Spell Substitution was a godsend. I would spend almost all my money on learning spells (I also got crafting feats because I also knew he would never allow me to buy what I wanted - knew that after spending a whole Starfinder campaign trying to buy artificial wings, which are, I think, level 4 item) and then, whenever we were yet again put into random circumstances, I would take the first short rest my team wanted (and they will want that, you know that) to reprepare something actually useful in the situation, thwarting his attempts to block everything I could do. That was smart on my part. Until I realised he realised that too, to which he reacted by raising all enemy saves by at least 3. Fun campaign. All in all, Substitution can be really cool, but might be absolutely useless if your GM is not afraid of letting you prepare because, for instance, his fights have more going on than just dealing damage without plot or narrative weight.

Staff Nexus has charm, but +1 Cantrip and +1 1st Level spell on a Stave isn't that big of a deal. Like you said it is really about adding lots of charges and machinegunning lesser spells with almost a spontaneous casters level of flexibility. An extremely small additional benefit is that this is allowing you to Craft a Stave. In most campaigns with the usual availability of magic items this is probably not actually a concern, but I always keep Staff Nexus in mind when I hear about a PF2 group with more frugal magic. Its a class feature, you are making that staff as long as you have the gold, the skill, and the DM hasn't screwed you over. IDK its not a big deal, but it amuses me.

A few notes: Firstly, spell substitution...it might seem more valuable if you consider preparing combat spells at the beginning of the day. With that, you are prepared for combat and can edit prepared spells for out of combat, when you have the time. Secondly, staff nexus...when the starting stave is changed into a standard stave the new stave has all of the spells of the standard stave in addition to the cantrip and 1st level spell of the starting stave. Thirdly, hand of the apprentice...it uses whatever weapon you have in hand, regardless of whether you are proficient with said weapon. The spell doesn't care if you are proficient, it still works. In addition, this is affected by bespell weapon if you cast another spell before casting hand of the apprentice. Fourthly, bond conservation...it feels important to note that while you can cascade drain bonded item, a requirement of drain bonded item is that the spell must have already been cast. Lastly, for many of the wizard's thesis', drain bonded item, some feats, and maybe even school interactions, these do not necessarily only interact with wizard spells. These abilities can interact with spells gained from archetypes/dedications. I hope these notes were helpful.
