In this video, I teardown a set of water damaged Withings WS-50 bathroom scales and look at some of the components used in them.

Thank you so much for your video! I had to open mine because of erratic measurements and a loose part that I can hear when manipulating the scale. But had no idea how to open it. I manage to open it, which was not an easy job. I found out that there was a small metal disk loose in the case that had gone from under one of the load cells. Now it is working fine. Thanks again.

Thank you for making this video. My buttons recently stopped working and now I know how to take it apart and look for corrosion.

Thanks for this without it I wouldn't have had the confidence to take my apart to try and fix my broken display! Mine didn't have a wire soldered to the metal button, and the PCB was a lot smaller than the display

Thanks for the teardown and repair video! It was very illuminating to see what happens inside.

Thanks ever so much for this video. Our scales stopped working after getting a dousing with bath water the other night :) I was disappointed to see that the newer model Withings smartscales at the same price (~£90) don't feature the body fat measurement or air sensor. The same feature set costs another £30 now (and I got mine on sale for £80!). Anyways, any excuse to buy a new tool, so my scarily cheap (£13) and lightweight Chinese heat gun came from Amazon today. I was a little too impatient waiting for the adhesive pads on the base to soften up and wound up bending the casing trying to lever the glass plate away as it had softened with the heat (the mountings for the weight sensors can also become mishaped if you apply too much pressure). I eventually got the glass plate off and cleaned up the underside of the board and had it working fine. Reassembling the device I heated the casing and sensor mount points up again and bent them back into place. It's also handy to heat up the adhesive pads a little before you put things back together, as they're stickier this way.

Thank you for sharing, my scale had no wire soldered to the center button. It was best in my case to only heat the glass to ease the adhesive tape because the scratches with the pry tool do not look good with a black scale. I had the "HW FAULT 899 - 32K not OK" and I think it was gone after resoldering the two Quartz.

Thanks a lot for the video ! My scale stopped working (only the display lit when inserting batteries or then stepping only the scale, but no text displayed at all). Dismantled it following the video, just cleaned the bottom of the PCB and it's working again ! What you could add though, is how the "buttons" on the bottom of the scale (to trigger the Bluetooth connect) are working. Seems that I can trigger it on my scale only when touching "A" on the PCB itself (when the scale is disassembled).

Great news that you got the scales working again! The buttons on the bottom are capacitive and very sensitive to the distance between the PCB and your finger. I believe the manufacturer used double sided tape to stick the PCB down to the base keeping the distance as small as possible. Perhaps this would help if you have some double sided tape to hand?

I just bought some of these in non-working condition... thanks for the tips on getting them apart. Mine show 50.0kg upside down when started! Not sure if that is a firmware issue or if the display is actually installed the wrong way up!

I wonder if you could tell me if it's possible to replace the LCD screen? I'm trying to search for generic LCD screens in the right proportions but idk what the connector type is called

Thank you, I was interested in where air quality sensor is placed and as I can see there are no proper ventilation holes fot this, apart three tiny holes between two buttons. This means that the measurements of the air quality can be quite poor.

Just what I was looking for. Any idea how to fix the screen not lighting up? I mean I can see the screen but is very dark. This happened after water got in. Any clues to where to look would be welcome. Thank you!

Spilled a glass of Zinfandel on my scale. Took it apart per your instructions isopropyl on both sides of the board and dried the insides. Works great for 24 hrs and then batteries dead. What could be putting a load on it?

Hi i have a scale which shows low battery. But i have changed to new batts n still the same. Could u knw wats faulty pls? The scale does not work as in wat ever i put on it the display shows 0. I even changed a new load cell. Im at a dead end.

I rubbed/pressed my foot on the silver disc in the middle. The scale started measuring the body fat percentage again. If it doesn't work, I would still try removing and cleaning just the disc first before opening the whole package. It's worth trying if it's just a body fat measurement problem.

Do you know which sensor module is used for Air quality? I do not recognise it by the image of it :(

MetaImre I'm pretty sure they designed a custom sensor based on an LED, photodiode and their own algorithm I'm afraid. The closest off the shelf parts I've seen are devices like the CCS811.

Think mines in the same boat (water damage) - the screen randomly comes on and changes the weight measurement unit. Very annoying. Everything else works but it's a pain to weigh and see that it's in a different measurement to what I'm expecting, plus the batteries die faster. Do you think I could get the adhesive loose with a hairdryer?

Hi Alex, A hair dryer should get it more than warm enough, just take your time with it, it does take some patience!
