'With Satan Himself By My Side!' - Jekyll & Hyde Comparison

Hello! So here's something a little different. A lot of people out there have made Musical Comparison Videos - where you take a specific lyric or moment from a song in a musical, and then compile various people who have played the role into a video to show off to the viewers. The viewers can then decide and comment on who they like best.
I've always liked watching these things, being a musical fanboy myself, and I decided - just for a lark - to make one of my own, featuring one of my personal favorite musicals: a flawed little gem known as "Jekyll & Hyde."
The comparison in this point is my favorite part of Hyde's theme song, "Alive!" Some of these I provided audio with pictures, others full video, gathered from various sources. There are 22 different takes on the line presented here for your viewing pleasure. What are your favorites? Are there any Hydes I didn't mention here that you like? Let me know what you think!
Not much else to say, hope you all enjoy!
Oh, and if you're wondering who MY personal favorites are?
IN NO PARTICULAR ORDER...
Anthony Warlow
Chuck Wagner
Rob Evan
Robert Cuccioli
Jo Seung-woo
Yun Seok-young
Drew Sarich
David Hasselhoff
Constantine Maroulis
Geronimo Rauch

    I love how Warlow shows the absolute joy Hyde feels about just being alive. Yun Seok-Young looked like he was having fun too.The other versions all feel like they focus too much on showing how evil and mean Hyde can be, and ignore his joy. I love them making crosses with the vial though👌

    It's because Hyde isn't strictly "evil" per se. He's just Jekyll's animal instincts/id given flesh, and these actors actually recognize that it seems. Just imagine you but with like no moral rules constantly doing the one impulsive thing you always want to do, but like... multiply it by 10. It's not strictly evil, more chaotic. I'm sorry, I just fucking love how this musical is like the only piece of media that actually got the message about Jekyll and Hyde right.

    Anthony Warlow IS A GOD. Geronimo Raunch has a very appealing voice and dramatic sound. And Yum-Seok-young stage preformance was fantastic and emotional with the acts of throwing his cane and hat aside and he looked like he had so much fun toasting the audience with his mischeif as Hyde. Very well done

    i mean the actors had no say in the choreography, but i don’t like the choreography in this song specifically for that reason, because realistically hyde is singing this because he’s so HAPPY about being alive and his murders shouldn’t of come in yet. I do think there are actors who show how happy he was better than others. Hyde was happy and demonic, that should of been portrayed apart from the murders

    3:06 Can we just talk about how actually awesome this performance is? The way the dude writhes on the ground is so perfect, and Hyde is just so down-to-business, yet carefree and fun at the same time? It's awesome! Plus, the way he dumps the alcohol, and then just tosses the bottle behind him? And they used an actual liquid instead of just faking it? I LOVE IT! Plus, the fact that they used real fire (I know some of the others did as well). The contrast between the blue ambiance with the bright orange flame was so contrasting, and breathtaking. An amazing job, truly.

    I love Warlow's rendition, too, but wish some of the purists in the comments would pipe down a bit - he's had the advantage (unlike most of the others here) of recording the segment this in a studio, probably with more than one take and definitely no violent blocking. Pity we never actually got to see him play the role onstage, outside of the occasional concert,,, he definitely made a lovely Phantom. Thank you for making this video!! As someone slowly getting more and more into this musical this is such a helpful and informative watch. So many different voices and takes, on top of the constant directorial changes this show has gone through over the years! A bit sad that Ethan Freeman isn't here, though!! aaa :(

    I’m gonna give a bit of context for the change they are talking about. In the Warlow Version, both parts of the song are in the same track- right after Lucy meets Hyde. This song is his celebration after winning a bar fight over Lucy. The Broadway version splits it into 2 parts with the part compared in the vid to be at the beginning of act 2 and the murder of one of the governors. So it’s not a difference of studio vs stage, it’s a plot and context difference.

  • @soomink

    @soomink

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@robertplattner1636 You're right that the context difference factors into it, but in general I meant that- no matter whether Hyde is winning a fight or murdering a governor- in a studio he doesn't have to be dealing with blocking / general movement at the same time as singing, as some of the other live recordings do!

  • @robertplattner1636

    @robertplattner1636

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@soomink Oh of course. But even if Warlow had been onstage, at least if I had directed it, this section would’ve been his celebration. So the way he sung it on the recording would’ve been perfect.

Now I love Korean musicals, evan if I dont speak a word there is something hypnotic about the language, ig that's why k-pops so popular. But not only that he really captured the passion and child-like-joy hyde has, just to be alive and for his actions to have consequence. Incoming longest comment ever! I wanted to give my opinions on these performances and got _way_ too into it! That being said, all of the actors featured here are incredibly talented and have worked super hard to get where they are today. I am by no means an expert, just a geek who's never known life without musical theater but is way too technical about it because I was always too shy to actually perform! Yay! SO HERE WE GO- - Chuck Wagner (0:10) has a great voice, but it's just a little too clean, which makes it feel like he's still in Jekyll mode here. - Anthony Warlow (0:33) is the clearest for obvious reasons, it almost feels like cheating to give a critique. I love him in this role though. Best performance of his in this show is Transformation. - Robert Cuccioli's (1:01) voice is great and he's fun to watch! I love the sexy leg he does in this recording! - Rob Evan (1:25) is my favorite by far! His tone, vibrato, and growl are perfectly balanced, and his Hyde feels truly unhinged! Not shown here is the final high note of this song, which Rob _always_ knocks out of the park! - Why do I feel like Guy LeMonnier (1:48) got mugged by the drummer after this performance? What I could hear of him sounded pretty decent. - Sebastian Bach (2:15) looks like he's having the time of his life! Maybe not my favorite vocal performance, but his Crazy Harry energy makes up for it! - I can't take David Hasselhoff (2:40) seriously. His acting is so ostentatious, and his vibrato is hideously overdone. It sounds less like singing and more like a nervous chihuahua. Maybe the only performance here that I actively dislike. - Laszlo Molnar's (3:02) take is interesting to me. His voice is really nice- you can hear a smile in it, and the casual way he kills the priest, punctuated with that little bit of growl at the end is kind of chilling! - I wish the audio in Thomas Borchert's (3:30) recording was clearer. It's hard to get an idea of his actual vocal performance. However, I love his big dopey grin! Cheerful/playful Hyde is one of my favorite interpretations of the character! - Drew Sarich (3:53) was a little underwhelming, but an interesting casting choice nonetheless. You don't see a lot of Hydes with a lighter tone to their voice. I'd like to see more of his performance, especially since this scene can be physically taxing, before I pass too harsh a judgement on him. - Takeshi Kaga (4:18) has a downright impressive voice. I'd like to see how he'd perform this scene and hear him in a live setting. - Paul Nicholas's (4:39) performance sounded like it hurt. Not that it sounded bad, but it sounded like his voice would be wrecked by the end of the night. The staccato was also an interesting choice. - Jo Seung-Woo's (5:04) voice is good, but there was a distinct dissonance between his theatrical body language and flat facial expression. Threw it off a little for me. - Ryu Jung-Han (5:30) takes the previous performance and sticks the expressions. Also, fantastic vibrato. - On top of a gorgeous voice, I love how menacing Hong Kwang-Ho (5:54) looks. He looks like he'd knock my lights out for breathing too loud. - Confession: I have a soft spot for German musical performances. German is my first second language and musicals are how I learned the majority of my German vocab and pronunciation while I was studying it in high school, which sparked a life-long passion for languages (and a linguistics degree, but I'm not here to talk about stress). That sentimentality smooths out Werner Auer's (6:18) performance a little for me, which is overall pretty great, just not my favorite. - Chris Murray's (6:43) performance is fun. His voice is closer to the top of my list- while it isn't terribly menacing, it's just lovely to listen to. A little lackadaisical on the physical side, but the blocking with Hyde just tossing the priest around is hilarious. - Marti Pellow (7:08) seems like he'd be amazing if the recording didn't sound like it was drowning in jello. - Constantine Maroulis (7:35). . . I'm not going to lie, I hated this arrangement when I first heard it. It's certainly a choice. Little to no actual Hyde in there, but if listened to without the lense of the story, it's a solid performance. - I hate saying negative things about people who are obviously very talented, but I have yet to see a Geronimo Rauch (8:02) performance that really stuck with me. He's obviously an experienced singer, every note is on point, but his cadence feels so flat, in this and Phantom (which was the video I watched right before this one, funny enough). - Yun Seok-Young's (8:29) voice, on the other hand, scares me in the best way. Gorgeous, and that one screamed line near the end is fantastic against the backdrop of his otherwise chipper demeanor. - Then there's Aleks Knezevich (8:55). I think I like his voice best out of the actors I hadn't heard of before this video (which was most of them, but still). He genuinely sounds -and in the photo looks- like a sophisticated gentleman who's flipped his lid and gone on a killing spree. I love his pronunciation and tone, and I'd like to see his live performance and hear more of his work. - Bonus: the other comments got me curious about Joey Richter and CHRIST ON A BIKE I HAVEN'T THOUGHT ABOUT AVPM IN YEARS. Voices I'd like to hear in this role: - Ramin Karimloo. I think he's overrated in Phantom (Crawford fangirl, sorry), but I agree with other commenters that he has enough power in his voice to potentially pull this off. - Terrence Mann. He has a _gorgeous_ voice, and is a versatile actor, having played the Beast/Prince Adam, Rum Tum Tugger, Inspector Javert, and Dr. Frank N Furter, among others. He'd be gold in this role. - Marko Hietala. We've heard Floor Jansen's cover of Dangerous Game, now we need a Nightwish cover of Alive/Reprise. This man has been a staple in the Finnish metal scene for nearly 40 years, underwent a botched polyp removal on his vocal chords in the '90s, and still sounds positively _incredible_- outstanding range, gorgeous vibrato and gentle tone in softer songs, and he can growl and scream like a beast! He would _crush_ this song! - Con O'neill. It sounds ridiculous but I'm only half-joking. He's an accomplished singer and actor, with a very unique voice. He's got a raspy, reedy speaking voice able to pull off an intimidating growl, and a soft, clear tenor when singing. Not to mention, his acting is phenomenal and he is nothing if not dedicated to his craft. The role of Jekyll and Hyde would be right up his alley whether musical or not. If you made it this far, thank you for entertaining the sleep-deprived ramblings of a madwoman, and please feel free to scream at me if you think my opinions are trash or I got something factually wrong! Edited for formatting and timestamps!

And I know as a damned one, that everyone will know me, everyone knows Edward Hyde" Whereas Confrontation goes: "But I'll live on inside you forever, with Satan himself within my body. And I know as a damned one, that no one will separate us, no one separates Jekyll from Hyde"

    1: Anthony Warlow: No doubt about it. No one is even moderately close to him. Not saying cause it's mainsteam. I genuinly think that. 2: Chuck Wagner. Love the energy in his voice. He does the song really well. The only version that I like almost (but not at all) equally to Anthony Warlow 3: Seung-woo: Legend. Love the acting and singing. He is so fancy and evil at the same time 4: Takeshi Kaga: This version has strangely grown on me. His voice was a bit weird to me the first time I heard it but now I like it. I also like the energy in his voice and generally this japanese version intrigues me. His delivery of this specific part is very good too 5: Chris Murray: He does the confrontation really really well so that's more the reason I mention him here. Also just love how german sounds 6: Yun Seok-young: Also very cool korean performance. Geronimo Rauch/Aleks Knezevich: Decent 7: Rob Evans: Pretty decent. I like his voice and acting choices with it Negative: David Hasselhoff: No offence to him, but I don't think he was good for this role. I guess he did his best but it just did not do it for me at all Negative: Constantine Marouls: No offence to the guy. I think he is talented in what he does (like Hasselhoff) just not for this show. I just don't think metal (or what this is) fits this musical and I don't like the direction this production went in at all The rest are just pretty "meh" to me (for this role, not as actors)

    I don't think Chuck Wagner gets enough recognition here. Yes, I agree that Anthony Warlow does absolutely amazing, and his voice matches the role greatly along with Robert Cuccioli and Yun Seok-Young. However Chuck's version is almost more desperate and woeful (possibly due to the key change) which I think is a unique interpretation of the song that really shows the pain and battle between Jekyll and Hyde going on at all times, and is just as powerful as the maniacal tone the other singers take to this song.

    Talking about costume design here because well I need to talk about David H. pants were so weird I know he’s very tall, 6’ 4, but my god the pants make him seem insanely tall and it doesn’t make sense for Jekyll but when he turns into Hyde, wow it makes sense it makes him seem creepy. Talking about music now because why not it’s a musical, someone pointed out how the first guy (only a couple of names I remember sorry) sounded happy like Hyde was happy to be ALIVE, the others sometimes have that little pop of joy but not many. I love Anthony Harlow’s performance- his voice is deep and I love his confrontation and transformation, he sounds like how I thought Hyde should sound like deep not too deep and for Jekyll not too deep nor to high I don’t know how singing works- I play cello. Now I need to talk about David H. casting I feel like he doesn’t belong as Jekyll, he doesn’t have that right feeling to him, and he also exaggerates his movements in weird ways like one moment Hyde will be walking how most people walk and then he’ll kind of crouch but not fully and then walk, it makes him look insane but not in the good way. I don’t like how his hair is extra long I get it Jekyll should have long enough hair to become Hyde but I feel like his hair was too long- I’m not sure. I think his voice isn’t loud enough either, it’s loud but not loud. I don’t know how to describe it- everyone else seemed to have this wonderful booming voice and then there is him, just there with his mezzo forte voice while everyone else is a forte. It’s very strange. I don’t understand a lick of Korean but the people who did the Korean musical versions of Jekyll and Hyde- did well in my opinion- they were loud and had this air to them that was very good. This is the end of my fairly short rant, I don’t know anything about singing just cello so forgive me.

    I’ve seen so many great singers take the role and crush it as Jekyll, but they get too feral or low for Hyde to do the songs well. I hate it because Warlow has a lot of unfair advantages, but managing to keep the energy in his voice is something he was great about.
