Relatives can donate blood but it is not encouraged. There can be a higher risk of Graft Versus Host Disease when blood is donated by a relative and GVHD may cause fatal complications during the transfusion. Its different for organ donation though but even then your organs would still need to be compatible.

1) no blood donation goes into a patient without extensive screening and testing, which takes time to do and set up. The next hospital would be much quicker. And 2) why not relatives? Blood is blood, if you're an identical twin you've got a really excellent match re blood, stem cells and even organs. I was tested as a possible stem cell donor for my son, I wasn't a close enough match though.

First degree relatives cannot give blood donor especially for patient with transplantation history. In several cases it could cause inflammation in recipients organ and cause organ failure, which is life threatening. I got this from US and Singapore Medical Journal, and this has been in the discussion since 2012. Longer than we think...
