I've always felt once the Jets returned, we should've given the past history of Jets 1.0 to them and have the Phoenix Coyotes history start when they moved. If anything, as a gesture of goodwill between Phoenix & Winnipeg.
To all the hardcore hockey fans in Arizona watching this video, sorry to see you guys lose your team. The people who filled that building (as small as it was) deserve respect for coming out for their team. - Random Canucks fan.
“Based on the climate, I don’t see the arena issue being resolved any time soon” Translation - Taxpayers aren’t willing to give freebies to billionaires any more.

Playing catch up. Thank you for still covering Utah. I went to games when I lived in AZ. Been in UT for 14 years and so excited! You all cover so well!
I know the last thing Arizona fans want to hear is the opinion of a Utah fan, but I really hope that AZ gets another team. Imagine the rivalry between AZ and UT. Would be awesome! Also in my opinion there is only one name that a new organization in AZ can be called, and that is the ARIZONA PHOENIX! Arizona will be reborn from the ashes!
If there’s an ever a chance they gotta follow exactly what Jets 2.0 ownership did brought an AHL team to Manitoba in 98. Ran the team like the 32 NHL franchise. Was in talks with the NHL since the 2002 Winter Olympics. Built a new rink in 04 to NHL standards and always kept in the dark till the right moment.
Regarding the Roadrunners: the Reno metro area is already getting an ECHL team this Fall, the Tahoe Knight Monsters. While this team will play about 45 minutes from Downtown Reno, still they're first in the market and people will get used to going to those games, buying their merch, etc. Additionally, they'll be affiliated with the Golden Knights, who are the most popular NHL team up there.
I’m excited for the All City coverage of Utah HC. I enjoy watching your show. Anything related to you guys will be awesome.
Blaming the auction cancelation on a bidder is ridiculous. #nuts #inthebag
The old jr. sun devils were called firebirds. Fun call back
There used to be a WPHL/CHL team called the New Mexico Scorpions that played in Albuquerque
COYOTES...FOREVER...SAME UNIFORM
You can build an arena in Arizona, you just can't ask the public for any money or tax exemptions, easy. They gave the last guy a gambling license and he still wanted a stupid tax exemption. Screw that.
Love your podcasts
I like what Craig said about civic pride in regard to public funding. Utah is young in this game and I think that's what they have in mind. Even where I live we put an entertainment district to pay for a youth hockey arena/ events center. The youth hockey gets a ton of local support.
Would love to see an ownership group with Doan, Watt, Alice Cooper, and any other person that comes aboard
If they come back they should be the Phoenix coyotes
I would like to see youth hockey out in the west valley... like past the 101.
Matt ishbia, please save us!!!! Tempe could happen with Matt at the helm.
As for the Roadrunners, is there a contract between Utah and the Meruelo group and how long is the term, because there use to be a rule with the AHL that a team there were to have a NHL parent team to be in the league, so the Smith group could build their own AHL team. But in saying that the Chicago Wolves this past year didn't have an NHL connection.
Why is Glendale not an option in the future? I know the history and fighting with Coyotes ownership.
@user-xn9jm6wx2i

Because the Glendale City Council is awful.
I’d love the Coyotes name to come back but I do have a suggestion for an alternative name and that is FireDogs as it would be a play on the Desert Dogs nickname that we at the Sharks had for you guys but no matter what Howler must be brought back as the mascot!!!
Give the OG JETS their history back
Two common critters that haven’t been used yet: Tarantulas and Bighorns. If the Roadrunners leave Tucson the Tucson Tarantulas has a nice ring.
The Firebirds was a baseball team I watched in town before The Diamondbacks came into existence. So there’s a local historical tie to the sports logo. I think Arizona losing the Roadrunners team / logo is a huge travesty as it’s belonged to the state even before the Coyotes. So Arizona is losing more than just the Coyotes, great job Muerelo.
Okay So why can't veterans memorial coliseum host hockey ? It will seat +13,000 For hockey and then what is not a bad seat in the arena. Yeah you're gonna have to spend quite a few million to make sure the ice is good in there but considering where it is you already got all the parking you need And it's at a centrally located arena with access to I17 and I10
If you really want to rebrand the NHL in Phoenix, how about the Phoenix Inferno (like Firebirds, a name of a long forgotten team, this one an indoor soccer team in the late 70s). And if Murelo take his AHL team to Reno, perhaps we could see the resurrection of the Phoenix Roadrunners (with a new farm team in Tucson taking the Coyotes name and logo). For the record, I think Arizona Coyotes is just fine. The idea worked in Ottawa and Winnipeg. (And if hockey ever comes back here to Billings, Montana, I'm looking forward to the return of the Billings Bighorns.)
There is another solution to all of this. One that most likely would have to wait a while but the way things are going there would be a wait any way. At some point, the Suns will need a new Arena. It could be 10 to 20 years but that's another way the Coyotes can get a new Arena is to share one with the Suns again!
I hate to say this, Coyotes fans, but there's no team for at least 10-15 years. The current political climate has to change on the arena deal, or there's no team. #sorry

Sadly yup
I can’t imagine they use Firebirds with the closest AHL team to Phoenix besides Tucson being called the Firebirds. Arizona Phoenix could be interesting but maybe too much crossover with Phoenix Rising. Those Gila Monster AI’s are deranged AF. Scorpions could work. Heavily used in NM but at this point mostly for youth hockey.
Matt Ishbia is the answer. He can retrofit the arena downtown in a matter of 2 years. Rename the team Phoenix, (not Arizona) whatever the team name will be. An arena on the outskirts of Phoenix is a bad idea!

Arizona Coyotes 2.0
Tuscon Coyotes and Arizona Firebirds? And keep the kachina logo as an alternate. It doesn't have to make sense. We can have good things that don't make sense.
The NHL will always want to be in Pheonix because of the size of the TV market. But, at this point, there will never be another franchise in Pheonix without an arena and nobody will build an arena without a franchise to lease the building.

Quebec City built an Arena without having a team.
I think the history really can't be moved to the current Jets cleanly.. there is overlap that just fails. If Alex is truely done then the history should go to the Utah team.. that said, what I can see moving to the Jets is the Logo's and Trademarks owned by the Yotes from that old Jets team. Let them use those if they want.. they really are no use to any other team anyway. Let's face it.. the history of hockey in Winnepeg for both Jets teams is shared in many ways.. oh the team records are not.. but the rest is, the fact that the players played there and such... really, the records would serve to confuse anyway. As far as the NHL in the Phoenix Metro area.. murky.. and don't hold your breath.. the more I look at this.. it's more than just Alex Meruelo... this team has had issues off and on since the day they moved here. Honestly, I'm not so sure that the NHL is glad to be rid of Alex as much as they are glad to get out of AZ.. the political climate for the NHL has never been rosy. The fact that Alex got $1B for his team rather tells me that the NHL was listening to Alex complain about how the various governments were playing the game and the NHL knew it was a failure from the get-go and really.. it's time to get out... Alex had one last play to go.. and if that failed.. he's walking and I think Gary Bettman knew it.. I'm not saying Alex is blameless.. but history of this team show.. Alex is just the latest ownership group to have issues.. At some point, you have to look at the common thread... the various government agencies are common.. how many owners have been here? 6 or 7.. and Ellman (the second owner) faught hard to either upgrade America West Arena (now Footprint center) and other places to build a new arena before finally look west to the Jobing.com/Gila River Arena... Quite Frankly, reading the history of this team.. Since Ellman sold the team this team has been teetering ever since. nearly 20 years of ownership instabillity.. No, Alex is no saint.. but after reading the teams history.. the cities of the Valley and the state have showed very little love to the team and only the fans have. Honestly, I'm surprised that the NHL just didn't move them while they owned/operated them from 09 until 2013.. Glendale was already trying to get rid of them around that time. I think Alex has actually shored the on-ice product up.. as far as the arena.. he's not made any friends.. but at the same time.. it takes to be be friends and when the other side don't really want you... impossible task. I think they had it better in Winnipeg... at least then they only had to fight the $$$$
And number 34 comes home
Closer to Alex Meruelo; That's a GREAT THING! I do believe that Gary Bettman has Arizona and it's fans in his interest. Bettman bent over forward to help Meruelo; I'm glad this chapter is finally over! Personally, I really don't want "The History" to be saved. The said history has been HORRIBLE! Few positive things to hang your hat on. I think Bettman knew all along Meruelo wasn't going to make anything work. I do believe the NHL owners were behind this too! There is NOTHING CLASSY ABOUT MERUELO! The guy is a P.O.S.! I'm glad he's gone! When talking a new arena, Could there be a possibility of tearing down Memorial Coliseum and arena in that location. Looks like a good location for anyone in the valley. It's centralized.location. Not too far East or West. Let's see what(OR WATT HAPPENS!)
These boys are our AZ boys.
Firebirds for the AHL Tucson team since Meruelo is probably thinking Reno Roadrunners. If Ishbia was the owner and wanted a new start he could name them the Burn....get it? I'm here all week.

From what I read the arena wanted Meruelo to sign a 20 year lease and he said no, so they kicked him out. A very stupid, stupid mistake. Gila River arena is a beautiful place
There is a difference between political climate and peoples dislike for Alex Meurlo.
As for rule changes, I would really like a short-handed goal to cancel the powerplay.
Coyotes 4ever!
Arizona should be at the bottom of any expansion list period. Coyotes never made a dime in the desert ever. Nhl struggled to find ownership for the team and all that took on the team regretted it. There wont be a long list of potential owners for another team in the desert. Besides any ownership group will have to pony up the expansion fee 1 billion plus and a new arena cuz your not going to get public support for it. And on top of that the owner is going to have to be willing to lose millions as the market is weak for the nhl and would be a huge financial gamble.
Everything with Muruelo is IF he follows thru....Roadrunners will be in Reno in less than 3yrs
Give the jets their history back period. Why should the coyotes have Winnipegs history?
The Phoenix Phoenix?
Coyotes back please. Howler and all of it. Do you think the Native American reservation could be a great owner group? How about a barn at talking stick? It could be built in 2 years.
NHL hockey will be back in Arizona, Phoenix is too big of a market to not have all four teams. same goes for Atlanta and Houston

Nothing, he was your only hope. The NHL tried for years and went above and beyond. Even the way they went out was a gift. No team in any sport was given so many chances.
