Witchcraft Health & Safety║Hazardous Herbs & Crystal Caution

Hey everyone, today I wanted to sit down and talk about some of the aspects of witchcraft people often overlook, the mundane Health & Safety. It might sound boring, but as with everything, it is always better to know the hazards and how to avoid them, than put yourself at risk.

As an herbalist and baby witch the only thing keeping me from getting involved in magick was seeing internet witches telling hundreds of thousands of people to take herbs and oils and whatnot without any discussion of potential dangers. I'm so glad to have begun to find responsible witches on here that actually go over the risks and dangers

I'm a Clinical Herbalist and I had to study for Six years with my academy, plus independent study, to be able to work with people. There are so many people who end up sick due to not taking herbs and plants seriously, and will argue with herbalists, because "I read it." Or "so and so told me it's safe.." I cannot tell you how much I love and appreciate this video.

*Fish and reptiles aswell are EXTREMELY sensitive to anything in the air, and that includes things given off by plants!* I have many animals in my room, so I never use perfumes, room sprays or candles in my room. Also for example at Christmas time I don't have any fir tree branches or wreaths in my room because reptiles are sensitive to the oils it puts on the air. From my research, amphibians are the worst effected. I have an axolotl but I think that it's important for my other fish and reptile friends

In general fish wont be super bothered by the air, considering they don't interact with it normally. Betas probably will be because they often breathe at the surface, but if you have fish that are naturally central or bottom dwelling, they probably wont be effected by anything in the air, unless you have an air pump (in which case a good filter should prevent anything that doesn't dissolve into it being a problem). Just be careful of ash falling into an open-topped tank from burning herbs, some fish may be effected by that (although many fish foods contain small amounts of ash, so it really depends on what plant is producing it).

@@ingridc0ld I'm late, but as someone who has kept reptiles both professionally & personally: this isn't true--pine and cedar can be dangerous to reptiles if there are large amounts in the air (and definitely don't put it in their enclosure, especially cedar), but fir is a common bedding type. Reptibark, for instance, is made of Douglas fir. You also can have wreaths and branches of any type in a room with the animals so long as they're not enclosed with them--I suppose if you have a poorly ventilated space and super fresh cuttings, you might be extra cautious (& imo, you should always have an air purifier in a room with animals in enclosures regardless of how careful you are otherwise), but the big concern is essential oils and incense. Remember these beings coexist in the wild, so as long as there's appropriate distance and ventilation, a pine branch in a room isn't going to harm your reptile. The big thing is avoiding toxic essential oils & incense, though I'd err on the side of caution and avoid any essential oils outside of a small reed diffuser in a different room. I also would avoid any incense, though that isn't based on anything except my opinion that it's probably distressing for an animal to smell burning things since we're pretty unique in our appreciation of fire.

My boyfriend's grandma is really into essential oils and she consumes them everyday and actively tried to get us to do the same because "it helps" and when we wouldn't do it, she would try to sneak it in drinks a couple times when we didn't feel well. But I smelled it. She's positive that drinking essential oils is good and we can't change her mind. But luckily we don't live with her anymore so we don't have to worry about being drugged with essential oils

That woman needs a doctor, but I can’t help but wonder; what about getting her some dry cooking / tea grade herbs as an alternative for essential oils? She can also stew them into a syrup or cooking oil fairly easily. 🤔 she can even pray while preparing them if it’s a spiritual thing for her.

Oh dear. I’ve had to cut out all essential oils from my skin care because they were giving me contact dermatitis. Citrus essential oils made me so photosensitive that I had to wear scarves and use umbrellas in the summer to avoid burns and blisters even if I was only outside for five minutes. They aren’t always perfectly safe. I can’t imagine what reaction I’d get if they made contact with my mouth and esophagus!

So I might get flak for this but as soon as you said Pyrite, I was thinking about my Rose of Jericho as I have a very small piece of pyrite on top of the plant with water in it. I thought that pyrite was safe in water, turns out pyrite leaches sulfuric acid into the water 🙃🙃🙃 so i had to drain the water, take the pyrite out and get it dry, pat my rose of Jericho dry and im waiting for it to completely dry before I put it back in water again. Remember folks, even if you have been doing witchcraft for a long time (10 years for me) it doesn't mean you know everything! 😅

I appreciate this video and your scientific mind SO MUCH! You're so right, very few places talk about actual "basic, mundane" safety. I was terrified I'd poison myself or set something on fire at the start, and luckily I'd already decided "if in doubt, swap it out." THIS! "Crystal health and safety" is music to my ears :D Crystals are my thing and I've spent literally MONTHS figuring out which are ok in water, sun, salt, etc. and let me tell you, it's confusing and there is no one comprehensive list that I've ever found, and many books esp older ones are just completely wrong about cleansing and elixirs - Definitely "if in doubt ..." keep it out of liquids! You can ALWAYS make an indirect elixir. Also that trick with melting the bottom and sticking the candle to something changed my LIFE when I first heard it from you, thanks!! :) Cheers to 100K!!!

I'm a "baby witch" (I suppose - maybe more of a mature student?!) and I'm horrified that people don't consider this stuff. Most of it is just common sense, surely?! And I really hate that "it's natural so it's safe" argument - water is natural, it can still drown you 🙄. I would add to the crystals category - for those who like to tuck crystals into their bra (ouch!), make sure you check they're safe. And actually I suppose the same would go for wearing spell pouches round your neck, or whatever - if the pouch fabric is porous, be careful what's in it.

  • @FFVison

You had mentioned the candle safety. I remember watching you play that tiktok video and they had a candle that they had warmed the bottom of and stuck it to what looked like a coin or something and I kinda cringed a little. Yeah, be careful with candles. Just because the coin is slightly wider than the base of the candle doesn't mean it's perfectly stable. Remember, trying to use candle magic to prevent your house from burning down might be less effective than just being careful using candles.

Thank you so very much for posting this video. I have been noticing a lot of harmful practices lately with good intentions that were being done with an apparent lack of knowledge. Hopefully, everyone will start to understand that they must consider every aspect of every tool including plants and crystals before including them in their practice. I knew someone recently who was so convinced that drinking a small amount of skullcap would bring her particular health benefits that she ignored the possible negative effects it could have on her liver and she ended up in the hospital. Someone else put tourmaline in an oil mixture and had to go to the ER for a very serious adverse reaction. My heart truly ached for those who either lost or caused severe health issues with their pets when essential oil diffusers were all the rage. Please take care and caution everyone:)

I searched if Daisies were okay for cats and NO. I panicked and moved them into my bathroom. Unfortunately I think a leaf or petal or something fell that I missed, because now one of my cats might have a respiratory infection. It’s all because I didn’t think. Yes I’d love my room and home to be full of flowers and plants and herbs but my cats mean more to me. So please think before buying ANYTHING fresh for your home. Buy fake plants.

Great video Hearth! This is sooooo not talked about enough - I work with dried herbs and essential oils a lot - but I study them all first before I work with them and my mum always used essential oils when I was growing up so I knew always never to put them neat on the skin etc. I've heard some hideously terrifying stories - the worst story I heard after I had my son when I attended a baby massage class with him and there was apparently a story about someone in the news who had used essential oils neat on their baby and the results were fatal - just heartbreaking. Absolutely, they are not 'all safe' and 'natural' etc - those misconceptions I think come in part from the greenwashing of brands trying to seem like their products are more eco by using greenwashing terms like 'natural' which actually means nothing really. It's always so important for us to do our research - do the reading - from different sources and never take risks or chances! Thanks for sharing Hearth 💓 Xxx

I'm so glad that you brought up such a subject within the community. I've stressed this so much within mine. Just because you saw it or read it somewhere does not mean that it is safe. I stress education so much to those around me, even at work. I would rather people be empowered than foolish.

Great video Love the phone case. Congrats on 100k. This is a topic that definitely doesn't get discussed enough. On this subject reading up on everything you use is important. I made the mistake once of using a crackled glass votive holder once and it literally exploded sending glass flying in all directions. Nothing will kill a ritual quite like dodging glass shards.

This is such a great talk. Not enough is said about safety when using magic. I am a nurse by day and there are so many people that do harm to themselves because they consumed something that was natural thinking it was safe. I love that you talked about safety for our fur and feathered babies. Bravo!!!

a couple things. 1. Been watching a few of your videos recently, love them! I took a really really long break from my practice so I'm basically a noobie again. So I love getting back into it and KZread is a thing now and people like you are on here sharing the knowledge. Thank you! 2. Your nails always look so pretty and cool!!

Really glad I watched this video! I'm just starting to tread the waters of witchcraft buy I've always been into geology and have a large collection of gemstones! Good to know the earnings around them, I'd never heard any of this before, probably because they're brought for display so it doesn't really come up

This is why I tell people to never give me plants as a present. I have cats and whenever someone wants to be nice and give me a plant, I will have intense internet searches, whether the plant is safe or not. My workplace looks like a Gardening Center, because I tend to bring all the unsafe plants there. Great for the energy at work, but a bit annoying for me, because I will need to ask, whether it’s ok to bring the plant and sometimes people give me plants without exactly knowing what kind it is and leave the guesswork to me. Nonetheless, I love my friends and family, just take it easy on the plants guys. 😂😂😂❤️ Thank you for this video! And congratulations for reaching the 100.000 milestone! ❤️

great video (and i love your earrings and phone case haha) but yeah i hope some of the people (usually kids) ive seen on tiktok find your channel bc i still feel like i dont know much about the practice after months of learning and i can tell that theyre doing some things they probably shouldnt 😥 and then spreading that idea to sometimes thousands of people who dont know better

not just kids though bc ive seen a few adults who practiced for a long time who suggest diving right in when you find witchcraft and that feels kinda irresponsible to me idk maybe they forget how little people know/understand when they start from so long ago lol

I am watching this video on Sept 21, 2022...the whole video...no matter how old it is ...is an very excellent video to watch...just for the information which I believe is important...being a witch myself....safety is the first thing that should be taken into consideration in doing anything in witchcraft...if something happens...it can make your confidence level drop and it would more than likely leave one either depressed..maybe..or feel like that they aren't a witch....safety in everything is the key no matter with herbs, crystals...or candles....I agree safety must be addressed...research...then get into what you want....one is still a witch no matter what...if something happens...don't give up...but, learn from mistakes...but, in the end...be safe.... thank you for this awesome and informative video💜

This is a very important conversation to have, thank you. Some common herbs and whatnot that are fine for people are toxic for pets. Some crystals are unsafe when wet or powdered. Always do your research.

Yes, baby witches need a Witchcraft OSHA/HSE. "Natural doesn't equal safe" Exactly, would you burn poison ivy? No! I just stick to the culinary herbs. I have a healthy fear of fire, so rarely do candle magic, but always use a candle holder. If I can't find my chime holder, I'll stick a chime candle (like Hearth does) to a pillar candle plate holder. Also, be aware that waxes burn differently. A typical paraffin wax will burn fast and smoke a lot, whereas beeswax burns slower and barely smokes.

On the note of herbs that can mess with your medication: The same goes for activated charcoal! It's legitimately used in medicine as a way to remove toxins from your body but the reason it works is because of is very porous and just binds whatever it comes across to itself. If you are on medication or birth control, steer clear of investing charcoal as much as possible. And also, just generally, don't fall for the charcoal-as-toothpaste thing. It's like using a metal brush to remove stains from clothing instead of soap. It doesn't work as well and damages the material.
