Morality of Cursing & Hexing║Witchcraft

Please note that these topics are entirely personal, these are merely my opinions on this topic. I respect everyone's opinions on these topics and completely understand if they are different, however, rudeness towards members of the community with alterative beliefs will not be tolerated.
I get asked a lot about where I stand on this topic, I tend to be pretty flexible with it, feeling as though others can choose to do what works best for you, but in this video, I wanted to discuss how some people respond to cursing and what you should think about within your own practice.

“Do no harm, but take no shit”. Sounds like something we all should follow in our everyday lives. As far as curses, etc., it just sound like a way to put someone in their place and not necessarily hurt them.

I'm a solitary Witch and have been at it for over 50 years. One of my teachers, many years ago, told me to look at these spells as giving Karma a hand, since I was brought into the negative situation by no fault of my own in the first place. She said that gives me the right to protect myself AND I've never gotten anything negative back, EVER! You have to put up strong protection and wards.

As a witch of over 20 years, I personally see the changing attitude to hexes and curses as a sign that modern witchcraft is growing up. I personally use hexes, curses etc only in the most dire circumstances but I believe I have the right to defend myself and my loved ones.

And you have that right to defend yourself. Say someone's creating rude lies about me, I don't see any problem with sending something that would influence any future lies they spew to ricochet right back to them. When it comes to messing with the free will of another, I won't do that, not even a simple love spell. I would be horrified to find that someone I had no interest in dared to manipulate me in such a way, therefore I won't do it to another. As you know, it's all about your intention. We create our world around us, everything we do, we say, it has an affect on our lives. If you are working within the laws of nature, you'll always be fine, but not everyone abides by the laws of nature. Being a witch of over 20 years, I'm wondering what you think about the fact that there are so many ppl now dabbling in witchcraft bc of the internet, KZread, ppl who otherwise wouldn't have an interest. It's become quite a trend, and I'm not so sure if that's a good thing bc there are a LOT of immature, ppl learning just spells, via Ytube, with no context of what they're doing, no understanding of where the lines are drawn. They're not taking the time to read, learn, and not every Ytuber is as thorough as HearthWitch, many just offer up the spells they know.

@Moon Child it's not retaliation in the sense of petty revenge. Putting up a charm to protect yourself is not so different from curing something. One is simply more direct the other more vague. If you curse someone for mild annoyances is petty yes, but if you feel someone is deliberately causing you grief and problems is it really petty to curse them so that their negativity and I'll intent go back towards them?

I'm quite pulled to the idea of hexing and cursing, but I'm not sure why. Good to know there are people who specialize. Everywhere I look for answers about cursing and hexing, it's always 'the 3-fold rule!' or 'karma!' or, as Hearth said, 'think about it harder!' Like, there's a reason people want to practice hexing/cursing. It's not all rooted in revenge and whatnot.

I have never cursed anyone in the past. But my great grandma was a known powerful witch in my hometown so I grew up knowing some shit. A week ago i cursed someone who has destroyed my home. I made a doll into her likeness, blew her name into it (kinda like baptising it) placed all my anger into it, tied the little hands and feet 3 times, drove a nail into the stomach, poured vinegar and grave yard dirt, made a little black coffin, spat on it and buried it on the cemetery. She's in the hospital, comatose... Lesson: don't cross a witch's greatgranddaughter.

I personally wish personal growth and healing to those whom have hurt me. Though in the moment of hurt, I'll admit that it's easier to wish them away from me. My personal montra is "Walk a mile in my shoes, then apply the golden rule." Maybe the person who's giving you trouble has troubles of their own, so Personally, I feel it's better to wish healing to them and personal growth. Plus if for some reason I was giving someone a hard time, theres a reason, likely personal. Everyone has an opportunity for growth. Plus an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. I want to break the cycle of abuse, by healing the scars. These are just my beliefs though, sometimes you have to fight against an abuser, I've been there. You do you, do what you have to.

Initially I agreed with this, bc it all makes logical sense on paper. But then I actually tried to think about how I would apply this to the people who have caused suffering in my life, and I realize I can't. There are abusers, pedophiles, molesters, gangbangers (when I lived on the streets of NY), snipers (yes, I used to be a war civilian overseas), and manipulative narcissists who have left destruction not just in my path, but have brought harm to others. I have lived a VERY painful existence, to the point that I'm mentally fragile & always on the brink of self-destruction. For me, I cannot imagine that a spell or even a curse can change the very ingrained brain patterns of my trangressors. You can't fix psychopaths. A curse or hex may just push them to go further into a rampage. So at best, protection spells for me & my loved ones, and a banishment or binding spell against these villains (to protect other victims) is all I can hope for. Your message of rainbows & butterflies will work against lesser evils tho, but there's just some people who have no hope for redemption. None.

Thank you! I have never felt the need to do negative work... until this week. I’ve come to understand that, with narcissistic personalities, “kill them with kindness” just feeds into their worldview that they are correct and deserve all the kindness and help that they deny others. I’m still on the fence on what to do (because the easiest magickal outcome that would limit the problems that this person is causing is death due to her health problems and I don’t want that), so right now I’m leaning toward a recorded meeting and then, failing that, mediation. But binding is another option I’m exploring.

  • @jf2801

I do think that any sort of baneful magick should be done as a last resort or with careful consideration. For a lot of reasons. There's the whole putting energy out and the possibility of it coming back, but also just maybe thinking about if thats what you want to put into the universe, regardless. Also, there's the fact that it can and does really mess up things for the person or people it gets directed toward, and that can be pretty hard on one's own conscience. You gotta consider whether or not this person truly deserves what you are doing to them. And take into account your own intentions and what makes you the one that should pass that judgement on them. And then there's the risk it could affect others, besides the target. Like the people around them. Not to mention, to do baneful magick, at least curses, you really have to hate this person. Like despise them. And it takes constant workings and spells and meditation and harnessing that disdain to feed the curse. It's real work, and takes a lot of energy, and you gotta ask if hating them is worth it. However, I do think it has its place and trying to tell others it's inherently evil of them is not something we should be doing. Sometimes, baneful magick is needed to make somebody see the wrong they are doing. Or to make them stop or teach a lesson. Sometimes it can be used to further protect you and loved ones, when warding alone isn't enough. Banishing is sometimes considered baneful, but yet specific target love spells are not. One is more manipulative and honestly sketchy. And it isn't banishing. Banishing is to remove negativity and toxic people and/or entities from your life. That's a reasonable thing. Making someone love you is dangerous and unhealthy, I believe. If it's forced, it isn't true love. That's just my personal belief. i respect others, of course. But yeah, not everyone thinks curses are inherently evil. And we shouldn't wag our finger at them for it. It's helping them. So I say just don't aim one at me and I won't care.

J F I agree with you. I’m not a witch and I don’t practice any magic. I was hexed and cursed at least 5 times by my mother’s sister when I was 4-5 years old. Why? Because she was jealous of my mother and angry at my grandmother. She ruined my entire life. Everyone I spend a lot of time with ends up dead. I have been mentally and physically tormented. Where is the justice in this? I am in my 50’s now and it is taking my life. It’s like an infectious disease. I can see that many people who engage in these practices do not know what they are really doing and what the effects truly are. How many people will be negatively affected. I have done nothing to this woman! I implore them to think for a while about eternity and where they’ll be going if they choose to go this route. Think about how many innocent people will get hurt, other than your target. Children, friends, neighbors, relatives, coworkers. Everywhere these people go, they’ll be carrying that energy around with them. Think about something other than your own ego.

@@faithcross8109 not to mention, it tends to take a lot of their own energy. But, as a witch, let me give you a little tip, hun. You have magick, too. All you gotta do is say you've had enough. Focus your intention healing your hurts and protecting yourself. I want you to look up uncrossing spells. It basically means curse removal spells. Ever heard somebody say "don't cross me"? Probably related. Except, they'd be crossing you, technically, as a cross is a type of curse. Anyway, sorry to hear about this person with ill intent targeting you. But, she only has the power you allow her to have, in your own life. Claim your power, and use it to stay strong. I hope it helps. Sending love and positive magick your way, hun!

Also, I did go on to say baneful magick has a certain place and can even be beneficial. But, as a last resort. I hope you read all of it. The main takeaway is that, more often than not, cursing is an ongoing process for the witch. They can't set it and forget it. They have to consistently be working to curse you in the present. Idk your relationship with your mother's sister, but, I highly suggest making ammends, patching up differences, or, if she's too toxic, cutting ties with her. Separate yourself, and her magick will lose potency. Also, never let her have anything from you. Not a personal item, or a piece of dna, or anything. A single strand of hair is all it takes. Spit, even. A fingernail. Your true name.

Your videos are really a balance of information that is greatly needed. Another point that I am really glad you made is that most people also assume that 'witches' are mainly white European. While we never 'called' our path by any name, I come from a mixed heritage from the Caribbean and my mama taught me to walk what is known by most as the 'grey' path. She taught me to learn the harmful arts but not to practice them, but to understand how to protect against them. It was brilliant. In my path we don't believe (and based on personal experience I can confirm this) we don't believe that throwing light and love is necessarily going to work. Generally, the entities or energies we've dealt with actually 'feed' on this energy, so you have to find another way to 'poison' your energy and protect your self from feedings. Needless to say we work with the poison path plants as well :) Personally I also work with banishing rather than binding, only because binding ties my energy to maintain that binding, but I agree that there is a time and place for these workings. I lived in an abusive home and trust me, when I was able to move out and do a banishing, I damn well did. I would never wish harm because that's just me, but I will absolutely protect me and mine.

Thank you, that was so refreshing and undogmatic! 🌈 I personally wouldn't hex or curse a person just bc it would feel like tangling up my energy with theirs, as if I'm creating a bond, that I as sure as hell don't want to have with someone that pisses me off! 😄 I'd always try to banish and get rid of them... Just my own feelings, I'm sure one can undertake curses without getting all enmeshed... I needed this video! Fuck how I needed with videos. I am in my 30s and I am heavily traumatised by growing up with an extremely abusive father. He nearly killed me as a child on a number of occasions. I managed to escape him at 20 when I ran away but now he's found me again. He found out where I live and he's been harrassing me and threatening my life. I don't think he means to actually kill me, just destroy my life further, but he could kill me in an rage fit when he's no longer aware of what he does. I'm protecting myself as much as I can, I have a support system of friends that know about this. The police won't do anything in my country. i have no proof of the threats or the abuse as a child, he doesn't have a record so unless I'm attacked and he leaves marks, they won't protect me. I've been doing bindings on him and return to sender spells for years. They worked for a while. But I am exhausted by his abuse, of living in fear, of being constantly victimised by him. I've been thinking about actually hexing him, and I've tried to do some research and ask for guidance in witches communities and have been shunned and shamed for it. It was, honestly, quite triggering, as a victim. To be shamed for wanting to take action to yes, do harm, but the harm is done to defend myself after a lifetime of harm being done to me. This video was exactly what I needed. Thank you for being open minded and thoughtful.

I don't feel I could do a serious curse on someone though I have been tempted. I'm a massive believer in Karma so it would worry me to distraction but everyone has the right to stand up for themselves. The most I have done is freezing spells and go away spells to rid my husband of a guy bullying him at work. It seems to have worked.

Thanks for the video. I don't like to curse or hex anyone but I have no problem with binding magic, but I only do it if I feel it's time. Recently a friend told me she suspected someone had put a curse on her. I told her I do magic and offered to break it but when I sat down to plan a spell, it didn't feel right. After much soul searching, I felt to tell her to do other things to work in her personal energy and shielding. I was so worried I'd given her the wrong advice, but I had to follow my intuition. I did a positive energy spell for her instead. I do sometimes find that saying a bit limiting: that magic must be our laat resort. I think sometimes it should be our first action to help us with the mundane.

I practiced for three years my craft, I still feel like a beginner and it is just that I feel more comfortable using my work for positive outcomes. I accidentally and non intentionally cursed and hexed some people in the past, it worked and I was sorry about it. And it was even before I recognized myself as a witch. I prefer doing protection, self love and help people with my energy, but to each their own.

Yes! I am sure there are some who are irresponsible with their work, but the vast majority of us who have to undertake baneful work are simply “returning to sender.” As for Karma - Whether it’s a thing, or isn’t, I do believe that (1) practicing responsibly “covers” this, and (2) the Universe is infinitely and intrinsically capable of restoring balance. It’s not a thing that should deter our practice because the Universe will determine what needs to be balanced and how. ✨Love and Light✨

Having started out wiccan and moving on to a more crooked path over the years I can see it from both sides so I understand where most of these people come from. I think another reason some people immediately get defensive is because for some they have been fighting to distance themselves from negative stereotypes in pop culture and seem people who curse and hex as also feeding into a negative stereotype which effects them directly. Although I don't follow the rede or the threefold law anymore I believe the universe always settles back into a balance so anything I send out is going to have an equal and opposite reaction. But frankly sometimes the consequences are worth it.

I'm new to the channel and have loved every video I've watched so far. Very informative and, I feel, trustworthy guidance. I'm new to witchcraft and I feel very comfortable listening to your teaching. I only have one comment on this topic and that is when the comment was made that cursing etc may be acceptable if the practitioner wants to teach someone a lesson. Taking psychology into account, most of the population acts from the Ego self which makes this belief a bit touchy in my opinion. The actions of another person could be misinterpreted or someone could simply not like another person for whatever reason and then argue that they "need to be taught a lesson" when in actuality it is the Ego of the practitioner that is creating the strong dislike of another. I'm not say cursing etc is never warranted, ever, just saying that I think it is dangerous to leave some things up to an individual's discretion. Do I have a solution? Unfortunately, no, just an opinion at this point and a point of discussion. Thank you again for the great videos!

thank you for the video ,my family goes back in the craft more than 150years , although the Wicca read is from the 70's , it was passed to me from my grandmother back in the day .it is best to pay attention to your own craft and leave others out of it . but you are correct, to each your own craft . as a point that is not often talked about, the 3 X 3 law that is in the read is much older than the read itself or Wicca for that matter . my grand mother said see had heard it back in the 1910's ,just put a little different ,but for the most part meaning the same thing . the craft is truly wide open , but i always remember what my grandmother said to me , careful what you wish for , be careful of your intent ...thank you great thoughts on the subject , thanks for sharing ...} O {...

I completely agree with you. I always say to others in need regarding witchcraft and wicca. Witchcraft is like a tree and as such it has many branches. Wicca is only 1 of many branches of witchcraft. Plus, not all witches are wiccan's and not all wiccan's are witches. I for example is kemetic. Aka an Egyptian pagan. I too recently asked this question on a forum regarding curses. As I have someone in my life that takes tremendous joy in causing tremendous havoc to me. She's all sunshine and rainbows to your face. But behind your back she tries to destroy you. She has single handedly caused me to get 1 warning at work and last week she succeeded in getting me fired. She is a coward. I have recently got a better job than before. But I have not and will not forget this person. Once I have started the new job, she's going to cop it. But like you said, there were so many people saying, remember the 3 rule, you're better than her let karma take care of her. If you ask this then you're not a white witch etc, etc. I have never wanted to do harm to anyone. I still don't. I don't want her to get physically ill or die. I just want her to experience what she did to me and that's it. Love the video

My friend is wiccan - she quotes wiccan rede to me so, I assume always she doesn't do "hoodoo" as she says with disgust. I find hoodoo fascinating and I find it's nearly impossible to find info about wiccan spells without happening upon bits of what I consider hoodoo added in! Wiccan rede is against love spells but they're everywhere, so for me, as I gather information and find my moral compass, it's hard for me to separate hoodoo from wicca. I think the idea of wicca is beautiful and very aesthetically pleasing and makes me feel good inside - but it's hard to draw a firm line in the sand against hoodoo because I really like a lot of the herb work and things, and so I like some hoodoo. My point is, she quotes wiccan rede to me, assuming I'm following wicca, when I'm not decided yet! I'm a baby witch. However, she does say "do no harm but take no shit" and "don't fuck with anyone, don't let anyone fuck with you."... That being said my best friend is closer to her and knows she was looking for herbs that are only used in "dark magic" at a local shop, and they judged her for it. So that being said, she is quoting wiccan rede and ideology to me, but doesn't seem to be completely wiccan. She does sex magic and all and to me, that's more hoodoo than wicca (although I don't know what she's trying to manifest there, I haven't asked, so I can't say for certain.). I do not know how to really navigate this witchy world, and I really find your bit about wicca being new (I had no idea!) very enlightening! I do not believe crossings, hexes, and curses are in the future of my practice, but I don't judge others who do. I know that I need more positivity in my life, and I believe it is a waste of energy to do negative working on others! It's a much better choice for me to do magic on myself, because I know that energy is not infinite. I think the wiccan rede and the Threefold Rule are beautiful words and I feel very peaceful when I think of them but I find issue with people who quote the wiccan "rules" and yet don't fully follow themselves. I do not know yet if I'm wiccan or if I'll practice hoodoo, I find that I'll probably find a way to meet in the middle. I love archeology and learning of cultures and lore, so wicca fascinates me but hearing it explained basically how wicca itself is younger than some people still alive right now, it makes more sense. Religion is always evolving. For instance I did a "love spell" that was sold to me by a witch. I do not know what type but it seemed harmless enough - some herbs like rosemary, clove, rose petals and color magic, with candles pink, dark pink and white. I was to write my name and the name of my crush into the wax and burn the candle for at least 3 hours a day while meditating. Once I even did so in the bath. I found no harm here because the intention of the spell was not to manifest love where it was not, it was to foster the connection that already existed between my crush and I and to make it stronger. Many people think this person Cares for me, she even carries a moonstone elephant I gave her around in her wallet everywhere she goes. I got fussed at about "free will" (by my wiccan friend, not the crush, different person) and wiccan rede and also she said that inadvertently, I'd been petitioning fae to intercede on my behalf. I did not know anything about this, and being Irish-American, I firmly believe in fae but I did not ever think to work with them, I did not even know that was a thing until recently. She had me put honey out, saying they'd want something in return. I whispered an apology during my offering in case I'd angered them by doing this spell so long and offered the honey up with respect and I stopped doing the spell. Did... Did I really invoke fae without even knowing? She asked what type of herbs I used and said that by repeatedly carving the name in, I'd done that. But I believe intention to be the biggest part of witchcraft, and so I was and still am very confused. I did not intend to interfere with free will and I certainly didn't mention any faeries! I personally am not ready to work with any deities or the like. I know you likely won't see this, but anyone else who reads it, is it possible to do such a spell without working with fae? Simply working with the herbs from the earth, rose quartz energy and free will with meditation? Or am I really meddling in things I'm not ready for by invoking fae? I did get some house plants like she suggested to make the fae happy but how easy is it to accidentally work with fae or a deity and not realize it? Is that possible with just meditating and candle work? Can a particular deity or... Idk what fae would be classified as.... To sort of claim your magic and expect offering for intervening without being asked to do so? Due to my heritage I take fae very seriously and I would never want to anger them but I'm not confident enough in my craft and what I know about fae or deities to work with them yet so at this point, I'm scared to do any more herb work or candle magic or even just to meditate on things other than protection and warding because I'm frightened by her words. Can anyone reassure a baby witch she's not accidentally invoking fae by doing candle magic? 😐 If it helps I mean it actually worked. Not entirely, I mean we're not together but she started texting me just to talk and even hung out with me two days in a row and I honestly think it went very successful considering it was my first attempt at anything! We are fostering a good friendship, I don't know if she and I will ever be together but I didn't ask for that, I asked for a chance to get to know her better and see where it went. But what's that got to do with fae if I didn't invite them into the ritual? I'm lost! Please help 💜

You may end up wanting to practice just witchcraft in one form or another, it can be adapted to your intention and is very versatile and aesthetic without the need for deities and religion as seen within Wicca. The Fae are always around, many people interact with them and have experiences with them without realising or intending, no evocation required. All spells can be done secularly unless they require calling on a spirit or deity, the fae are wonderful spirits to work with, but certainly aren't required for any working. We can choose to connect with them and they may add their energy and assistance but they are an addition, you can manifest the outcome without them. The Fae, if they reside in an area around someone may get annoyed at the lack of offerings regardless of whether you have worked with them intentionally or not, they can't "claim" your energy, but as they have likely lived there for a long time they can get annoyed at the lack of offerings. Some people avoid this by working with iron around their homes to limit fae presence. Unless you are calling upon them for a working, you aren't evoking them, they may be present but you aren't causing that x

Wicker is more ritual magic then neo-paganism due to along with traditional witchcraft Gerald Gardner also took a lot from ritual magic including all the tools commonly used in Wicca which it may be a worthwhile and interesting read for any wiccan to look at the greater and lesser Key of Solomon or most similar practices to do the same the similarities between what the rituals where originally an altar to 4 Wicca and other similar practices is extremely interesting

Hi hearth, 👋 I agree with this. I study Traditional Wicca, Druidry, and Draconian magick. I believe in doing these. However, I meditate on the situation that brought up the consideration for cursing. Questions like have I have done all I could do to resolve the situation without magick? Does the person(s) involve truly deserve it or is it just my emotions getting the best of me. I usually wait until I have recollected myself before even making decisions as to curse or not to curse. There is a alot of facts that I will consider before jumping into it. I am a leader of a group and I host a pagan podcast (not any good but whatever). But yea there are a lot things I do consider before jumping to these type of spells

I don't mind sending out a curse if it's warranted but it is usually a bottom of the barrel thing. There's also degrees of curses. If I'm feeling petty then I'll throw out a curse of inconvenience ie. May your headphone wires always snag on doorhandles. If someone has really done something bad then I'll go to town. It's not something I'd do willy nilly mind you. I also have curses built into my home protections
