Wisdom

Philosophy means, in Ancient Greek, the love of wisdom. But the word wisdom can sound very big and forbidding; what does it really mean to be wise? And how might we consciously strive to be a little wiser?

    My dearest School of Life, Thanks for another masterpiece. I've always wanted to be in academia or work for something that society would think as an intellectual job while I'm working in a bakery after graduating from uni which in very fond of. I wondered why the idea of engaging in an "intellectual-looking job" has been haunting me for years and realised that I just wanted society's recognition for my intelligence. I know it's quite absurd but I can also imagine many people can relate to that. After watching this video, I understand that you don't have to be in a position where society would praise you for your intelligence but you can be full of wisdom without having any certain career. This simple idea improved my recognition of myself and made me feel good about who I am and what I do. After all, I think being wise and keep doing best at where you are itself is a precious thing. Thank you :)

    Hello School of Life! Once you grow large enough you should create a sister channel for the soul purpose of teaching the younger kids. Directly addressing the problems kids go through & what obstacles they may face will surely have a huge impact. It could also be a good channel for parents to run to if they find trouble explaining something to their kids. You could call it 'Welcome To Life.' haha

    This spoke to me at so many levels, the two that stood out the most was the ability at being calm, having a lot of patience with things, enjoying a day where nothing is happening and seeing it as a good thing. Also the one where food, water and shelter are often overlooked, I'm always thankful of having it, and never once in my life have I had to live without it, I don't know how it feels to starve, be thirsty or homeless, but I'm thankful I've never had to experience it, and only have other's perspectives on how it feels. Truly a great production video, as always.

    I think wisdom leads to a contented life, no matter what happens to you. And I think that essentially every person in the world is seeking contentment, often using misguided ways to try and achieve it, but essentially it is all in the way you think, and that is the core of philosophy, seeking more wisdom, and that is done in the mind either through direct experiences or using the brain to contemplate perceived ones, then aligning your brain to process things differently with this new wisdom, instead of the way we are taught to, or allow our emotions to dictate

    Sanath .K.S what are you talking about? What source told you so? I don't even know how to argue with it because it seems so illogical to make such a statement. Are you saying Buddha thought people are simple and you can easily describe and judge a person from just one encounter with them? Are you saying a person who has just lost their loved one will behave the same as the day they heard some amazing news? People are complex and to say that Buddha didn't acknowledge it seems simply foolish

However, being South African, I sometimes feel that African ideas should be explored a bit more. +Setshaba Mashigo That would be cool. At the same time, I think this would be a great opportunity from people within the respective cultures to make similar videos or blogs to introduce these ideas and teachings. It may be a bit too much to ask people who are not very involved in this cultural background to present these ideas well, e.g. for lack of ressources or personal understanding. Not to mention that it might risk misrepresentation of these ideas. So maybe more people from different cultural backgrounds will start similar projects and add to the pool of ideas.

If this requires a lot of resources on your side, you may be interested in outsourcing this to the viewers by enabling subtitle submissions in your videos! This idea came upon me when I wanted to send the videos to my friends in Poland and Germany who are interested in the raised topics but don't speak English (sufficiently). I feel like they're missing out on some good content. Please continue doing this brilliant job! :) Kind regards, Bob.

    Dear School of Life: I love this channel! It has taught me so much and I showed an exert from the Ancient Greece video in my assignment on ancient history. Not only did I get an B+ (most likely because of your video) but because of you have taught me so much in general - things that they don't teach in school, emotions, stress, anxiety, why countries are rich, why they are poor and other things. I went through a phase in my life where all of a sudden I felt as if I had no purpose in my grade and I didn't raise my hand in class and I lost friends and I wasn't my usual self. I felt sadness and very few days of mine were happy. I then found your channel and it really taught me how to deal with emotions and how to empower my heart and brain to improve them. This all happened around mid-last-year. At the end of 2015, my school held an awards night where I won first place History, first place Geography and first place Languages Studies. I am so privileged to have found your channel and watched your videos that made my days brighter. So thank you school of life, for you have truly given me life.

    i feel like this video and you videos in general are great. I feel like they've made me grow as a person, I've developed a different view of our society. But this came with a price. I feel like I rarely have a meaningful conversation, I feel almost alienated from my friends. You have helped me understand why people are like they are, why people behave the way they behave, but having a social circle that has not learned these things makes me feel unfulfilled, alone.

    literally these videos have changed my life. I'm far more patient with my family, because I see rude outburst, and I try to pause sometimes and think, where is this coming from. I grew up in a very religious household, and when i was young I used to pray that I'd have the wisdom of Solomon. Now that I'm older, I don't pray, but still seek wisdom.

The Tao Te Ching, the Dhammapada, Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, Teachings of Jesus, Bhagavad Gita, and the like. Wisdom is a much needed focus in this age of information and knowledge. A spiritual life that has an appropriate marriage between information, knowledge, and eternal wisdom is a beautiful thing. Thanks again for your thoughtful meditation on wisdom.

    +schnapslaus I think it is foolish to try to change the world. The world is changing constantly, why would one want to steer it in his direction. What makes his Idea of the world great enough to change the whole world for? The world is not his responsibility, he only takes responsibility for his own life rather. A wise person would become an inventor not to revolutionize the industry but more so because he knows he'll find satisfaction in doing that.

    Perhaps, after examining the history of history, the wise realize that the world changes for the better on its own, which makes sense if you consider the insignificance of each individual. It wouldn't make a lot of sense if a person could make a big change in the progress of the world's moral development. Maybe the wise know they can only reduce moral entropy on a limited scale, in the space and time directly around them.

    Loved the video, but I can't shake a nit pick (though it seems inevitable to have disagreement when speaking at length to define any term) - maybe it's the brash American in me, but somehow it's hard for me to default that it is _wisdom_ to decidedly not rock-the-boat when confronted with a friend who's made "wrongheaded" child-rearing decision or political affiliation. If truth is known by one, what beyond civility does the wise man have to gain to withhold it for the sake of placating an audience? Perhaps I'd too be too quick to assume strength in conviction be the default, as is my preference. Wouldn't true wisdom to know when to pick these battles at least? Or is it wise to assume that the truth you hold from experience won't be shared unless sought out, so better to save face rather be pushy when you actually know what's best. -Egotistical American opinion.

  • @Wtrdragoon

    @Wtrdragoon

    8 жыл бұрын

    +FREEDO My point of view is that the truth you have from experience is a personal belief about something, and as we all have these it would be an error to believe that your truth is more valid than another person's. Your point of view, however, may be useful to someone who is uncertain about the validity of their own views and is seeking an alternative. If they are a strong believer in their current viewpoint, it is likely that a conflict with them will only cause them to become more argumentative, more set in their viewpoint, and cause a rift in the friendship. If the focus is more on the commonalities you share, it is more likely they may seek your opinion or advice in the future, or wish to follow your example if you appear more content or satisfied in life than their beliefs or decisions have lead them thus far. Of course this is just a general idea, certainly there may be exceptions where conflict becomes necessary.

  • @xFREEEDO

    +Wtrdragoon Certainly there are truths that aren't derived from personal experience. Wouldn't it be unwise to value complacency over education? At least in SOME cases? What if that painful truth can do a ton of good, wouldn't in be "wise" to value that over placating a friend?

  • @tthenewcomerr

    +FREEDO Conflict is a defining feature of humanity; conflict of ideas, politics, truth. Ask yourself, why you feel the need to question others' beliefs; in the case of this comment, you are questioning your own beliefs, asking KZread for an answer. Indeed, some friendships can be built on healthy debate, but other times it can be healthy to see there are simply other ways of doing things. Perhaps one day your friend will come to you and tell you their approach to child-rearing isn't working out, they may seek another perspective from you. But most of the time it will probably work out just fine for them, even if it's not the way you would do it. In terms of wisdom, is it wise to assume our own beliefs to be more true than others'? Could the mere act of conviction be considered wise? People are often more open to learning than we might think, but we close off from learning when we feel attacked. In summary, would you prefer to be thought of as the wise friend, or the opinionated friend? A certain amount of restraint may be required for the former, understanding when it is necessary to divulge your experience.

  • @wjpmitchell3

    +FREEDO Glad you brought this up, because I had taken it as "know when to pick your battles" and hadn't considered the alternatives. I feel as though I could understand both perspectives, but I agree with you that my definition of wisdom, as I currently understand it, would place more emphasis upon knowing when to hold your tongue, and when to let it loose, but I'm also an American, so it could just be us. When it's hold your tongue or pick your battles, I know that's what I'm probably weakest with in this video anyway.

  • @Wtrdragoon

    +FREEDO I agree a lot with the way YoungMontanaQ stated it. Some friendships thrive on healthy debate, in these situations it requires that both people are open minded enough to listen to opposing points of view and perhaps to be able to agree to disagree without holding resentment. When this isn't the case, it can often turn into a fairly pointless argument with both sides feeling attacked and defensive.

I think a wise person would stop a potentially bad series of event from occurring even if it means upsetting some less wise people in the present and may seem a little rude to the average person. Therefore, I don't think a wise person would necessarily fit into the people pleaser group or even the social cohesion group.

    I agree with most of this except for the part on politeness; or, to put it with slightly more nuance, yes we may be polite, but this does not mean we should refrain from arguing about political matters. The School of Life's view almost seems to imply that either any person's opinion on morality/politics is as valid as another's (which makes it dangerously close to relativism), or it implies we should be reluctant of acting. Shouldn't the wise person be willing to debate and argue, in order for ideas to spread and conclusions based on flawed argumentation to be discovered? So many people (including wise people) hold views that, when crucially analyzed, show some inconsistency with other premises they believe in. These inconsistencies may never be discovered unless pointed out by others. To say that minds cannot change due to debate is cynical; has argumentation not played any role in moral progress? Having said this, a basic condition for anyone entering into argument should be to have the willingness to have one's mind changed when presented with the right arguments.

    +cybroekman why is relativism dangerous?

  • @cybroekman

    @cybroekman

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Eric O +Eric O Moral relativism, as I understand it, implies that there is no such thing as being "wrong" when it comes to morality; it seems like "anything goes". Hence gender inequality, homophobia and female genital mutilation can be accepted as simply being "moral" for a particular person. While I would not argue that we are able to reach the same level of objective knowledge about morality as we do about physics, I believe it would be a mistake to go to the other extreme and simply state that morality is nothing else than mere opinion. Refraining from discussion about these could allow grave injustices to happen. Moreover, relativism seems to me to be inconsistent. People who hold relativistic beliefs often accompany it with a normative statement, such as: "therefore, you shouldn't judge/criticize other people's views". However, if no view on morality is any better than another, then this statement would also be meaningless. It would be only an opinion without any weight.

  • @BroCactus

  • @cybroekman

    +Eric O You're kind of showing my point in why I consider relativism to be dangerous; if justice is only considered a point of personal preference, there is no basis on which to say things like slavery or genocide are unjust. I believe we can take an impartial view towards justice. One way to do this was brought forward by the philosopher John Rawls in a thought experiment. He told us to imagine being behind a "veil of ignorance"; a hypothetical state where we do not know which position we will take up in society. The just institutions are thus those that lead to the type of society we would like to live in, even if we do not yet know our place. Hence, the institution of slavery would only be just if we were willing to live in a society with slavery, even if we could end up being the slaves. Since no rational person would want to live in a society where they could end up being a slave, such a society cannot be just. This shows just one example of how one can reason objectively about morality. Questions of morality are fundamental to our very existence; it would be a shame if we all disregarded them as nothing more than an opinion.
