In this eighty-third episode of the Wisdom for Life radio show, hosts Dan Hayes and Greg Sadler discuss a number of ideas that originally came from philosophy which have taken on different, sometimes even opposed meanings in popular culture.
In this show, Dan and Greg discuss the nature and experiences with fandoms, a phenomenon that has been around long before that term began to be used. The focus in this episode is on identifying good and bad aspects to fandoms for those who participate in them, and working out approaches that will allow people to enjoy the good aspects and avoid the bad aspects. They also discuss whether participating in a fandom can be part of a full, happy life, from the vantage point of moral philosophy
They discuss what the original meaning and movement associated with these terms was, and still in in philosophical circles. They also discuss the range of popular meanings assigned to these terms, and in some cases how the terms came to take on these divergent meanings

This is a show in which Dan Hayes and I explore ideas from philosophy and connected fields and apply them to issues and challenges from everyday life. We range quite broadly, sometimes exploring resources from philosophical traditions like Stoicism, Aristotelianism, Existentialism, among others. We focus on both understanding theory and key ideas, and on experimenting with philosophies in practice, or philosophy as a way of life. We discuss social, political, ethical, relationship, dating, and workplace issues. We also occasionally answer listener questions, or focus a show on untangling moral dilemmas found in AITA posts. We have also done interviews with guests ranging from academic philosophers to NFL football players. And we sometimes stray over into literature and popular culture, for example, in looking at Philip K. Dick's works.

I was sort of involved in Godzilla fandom for a while and went to a convention one time. It seemed like a nice family-friendly community! That being said, as my friend once put it. "Fandoms that involve doing something rather than consuming something tend to be more chill". For example, people who are skateboarding or making models tend to be more welcoming communities than, let's say, Starwars. Nothing against Starwars. I happen to enjoy the series. Also, to be fair, there are the fixed gear bike jerks out there! Haha, any way, It's difficult to say how true that is, but I thought that was an interesting yet perhaps reductive observation. Lastly, when I skated more as a teenager, we would kind of look down on longboarders, which I think was pretty silly now. So perhaps my point is moot here.

I think we might consider skateboarding or biking less fandoms and more interest groups. Unless I suppose there’s a big aspect to following people in the group, like Tony Hawk. But then that seems more like athlete or celebrity fandom. The Godzilla fandom sounds quite interesting

@GregoryBSadler Yeah, that's probably a good distinction to make. The Godzilla fandom is really cool. Usually, they're fans of other Kaiju and Tokusatsu films and shows, too! It's a lot of fun!
