    My house was built in 2017, I went to install a light, the Romex in the outlet had 4 wires, the copper wire, the white the red and the black wire. The light had 3 wires, the copper the white and the black. I connected the white to the white the black to the black and the copper to the copper and put a cap on the red because the light did not have any red wire. When i put the breaker back on the light came on but the switch cannot turn it off. I opened the switch and saw the red and black wires connected to the switch, the white wire is capped with a screw cap. Can I change the wiring at the light from the white on the fixture to the red in the Romex?

    My house has a ceiling fan that i was going to change to a regular light. It is a very old house. First, even when the wall switch is off the black wire is still hot according to the pen tester. It is hooked up in the box with the black wire going straight through and the white wire going to the ceiling fan where it is hooked to two wires then back out and hooked to the white wire going out of the box. Plus the bare ground wire hooked to the fan chassis. What's up with that? Is that ok?

    Gary Brower Shut the room off at the breaker. A light switch only shuts off the circuit by disconnecting one wire. Also the bare wire is a ground wire and it’s supposed to be there. It directs electricity to ground if the fixture becomes energized so you don’t get shocked when touching it.

    I think you meant to say "the black probe into the black lead and the red probe into the white lead." But aside from that, why aren't you advising the homeowner to turn off the related circuit at the breaker box? All it would take is the wall switch getting inadvertently turned on again (especially easy to do if it's a two-way switch and another person in the house unsuspectingly trips the other one from another room) for a nasty, dangerous shock to occur. Barring that, at least put some painters tape over the switch(es)!

    Should I try this if my lights are flickering. I already checked the electrical box and that's fine. Edit- well just tried this and didn't work must be something else. It happened with another led fixture but fine with those halo lightbulb that was in the spot. But could be bad wires might need to get a someone to get it checked out. Also sometimes it just dims and stops flashing so not producing the light that is it's full potential.

    It's sometimes your light switch bro, could be a bad light switch which they're like $3 at home depot or the wires to the switch are loose. Bugs/wear can cause this. May want to consider that if you're getting flickering before you consider an electrician.

    Didn’t mention ground wires. Also, after the wire nut shouldn’t we tape?

  • @cavscout888

    @cavscout888

    Taping isn't required, and some electricians will even say not to, as doesn't help in theory and also is against code since it's not installing the wire nut per manufacturer's instructions.

    Follow the instructions if new. If old, hopefully has colored wires to indicate. If LED, it may not matter. If bulb type, it can work either way but can be dangerous to have them switched, as electrifies the whole metal cup the bulb screws into and can shock if touched.

    Hmm I am confused about the wires that you screwed together. I thought same coloured goes together. It looks like a white and black was screwed together.

  • @jbuddyman
    @jbuddyman8 жыл бұрын

    I do agree with Ted L, the first commenter. Also a good practice when splicing your wires together would be to take the stranded wire, twist it together, then wrap the solid wire with the stranded wire with your hands, then twist your nut on, as opposed to just screwing the nut on the wires. The circuit tester can actually be probed both ways, so it really doesn't matter. I'm not sure why they color them, but it'll work either way.

    Here's my issue! Every time I mess with chain lights, which you didn't address in this video, is the hang nut. The trick is to adjust the hang nut to the proper length from the ceiling so that the cover will come at about half way down the threads on the hang nut. Then it will be at the correct length when you hang the chain on it and feed the wires through it. Otherwise, as you can see in your video, you will have to twist the hang nut to adjust it. Which in turn, will twist the wire up inside the junction box or around the hang nut, as in the video and possibly cause a short.

    First, you assume too much. You assume someone who originally installed that light did it correctly. If someone switched the neutral and not the hot, the light would go off but it would still be a live circuit. Circuit break box! Also, nice that you did hook up the ground but you failed to mention that. That was a simple install. Now show one that's a nightmare with three hots, three neutrals all coming in, a ground, the twist caps and light fixture, plus jumper wires tossed into the mix that a shade tree DIYer did years ago.
