Wiring a Schneider Softstarter for a Motor

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

How to wire in a Schneider AltiVar soft-starter and controls. In this video we will go through an Schneider softstarter, explain the power circuit, wire variations of control circuits using both AC line voltage and DC low voltage, and explain the manufacturer's data sheet for these specific models.

Joel, This is an amazing video. I've recently became Red Seal construction electrician in my apprenticeship, I have never dealt with motors because I've spent most of my apprenticeship doing commercial and residential high rise towers. When I was in school learning motor controls, I would never understand the section. The pictures they drew out did not really apply to the real world. A couple of months ago, I was given a contactor and a 12 x 12 jb and was told to wire this up. I had no idea what to do, I didn't even know to use din rails to mount the contactor and soft starter... nobody could help me, eventually somebody else did the job and I never learned. I love how you have the din rails, the contactor, and starter exactly how it would look like in real life. I saw the A1 and A2 terminals on the contactor, but had no idea what it was. I am going through your channel and I hope I can learn everything I didn't get to learn in my apprenticeship. You are the instructor I needed to have during my apprenticeship. This video relates so much to the real world. Thanks for making and posting these videos!

What the right devices or control ( soft starter ) for 1hp single phase Water Pump Motor , my source using Solar Power Inverter. Thanks..

Would you recommend this sort of application for a well pump with power supplied by a solar-fed high frequency inverter to avoid the amperage in-rush? I am trying to plan how to ease the strain from high induction loads on the solar power system. (This is all in the planning phase). Thank you!!

Thanks for the video... do you have advice on if you want the entire system to run or stop just based on a 24V signal with no start or stop button? Also, I would think that this default state would be stop, but is there a way to wire where the default is to start? P.S. What would it look like on a two speed motor and phase monitoring?

Is it possible to run the soft starter just from a MCCB to SFU unit with semiconductor fuse and directly to soft starter and output to motor?

Let me see if I understand.. If I already have a motor controlled directly by a contactor, to add softstarter I would A) add the softstarter between the contactor and the motor, and B) add the breaker to provide safety. Second question. If I have a single phase motor, how can I tell if it is capable of being self-started?

Nice video.pls those 3 wire from the mccb, are they hot wires. Is the motor a 3 phase motor. Also, the wire connected to A2, is it a neutral wire?

Yes, Those are all hot lines from the breaker through the contactor and softstarter. The entire power circuit is 3-phase delta at 208V (Canadian with our color code of Red/Black/Blue for hot lines, and white for neutrals.)

Hi Joel can you do the wiring illustration in the case of a single phase electric motor (the type with capacitors attached ? also assume the power supply is a 240V three wire (L,N, PE) type

Hi! These softstarters are not actually built for single-phase motors like that. You'll need a 3-phase motor to use this. In your case, you might be better off to connect a VFD (Variable Frequency Drive) and use that to convert to synthetic 3-phase if you need a ramped start.

@@joelteacheselectrical So you mean a VFD with a Single phase input and a three phase out put to ramp up the motor. One problem though, the motor itself is a single phase type with capacitors, so it only takes a three phase input, how do you power a single phase motor with power from a three phase (U,V,W) output of VFD?

Also the datasheet of the ATS01N112FT and ATS01N125FT does say it can be used to power a single phase electric motor. I may be confused on this topic, it seems like there is a lot i am missing. Setting me straight on the topic will be very much appreciated

It might, but personally, I would not advise it. A soft-starter synchronizes with the source frequency and allows an ever-increasing amount of the source voltage to pass through as it ramps up. On a grid, that frequency is very regulated and easy to control. Most generators struggle to maintain a reliable frequency and this can lead to burnouts on these units. I would suggest a 3-phase pump on a VFD with a ramped control. A VFD takes the incoming supply, whatever it looks like in voltage and frequency, and converts that to DC that it then creates synthetic AC out of. It is far less reliant on the quality of the incoming power. Any electronic device, VFD or softstarter, can fail with a higher probability on a generator due to the erratic output under load. I would be cautious, or possibly look at upsizing your genset to better handle the load.

@@joelteacheselectrical this is extremely helpful but even though I said generator I meant to say my inverter I am using a 6000w growatt pure sine wave transform based but ever time the well pump kicks in lights flicker. The pump has a capacitor already but was thinking maybe a bigger one might help, thoughts? Also based on you reply since this inverter supplies pretty clean 60 hz the soft starter might work true?? Thank you btw

I make all my illustrations in Microsoft Visio (I have a 16 part series on how to create visual representations of electrical parts with it). Those drawing are exported as images and used in Powerpoint. I use a Autohotkey "Powerpoint Inking Toolbar" in that with a Wacom One tablet, and then I record with layered documents using Screencast-o-matic.
