Recently bought the Nu-x B6 and absolutely love it.able to use with battery powered rig if necessary great sound .simple to use. no wires hanging around.you can always plug the receiver into an extra xlr and move it to a better location on the stage if you need better range easy to hang it off somewhere for better line of sight. Sound is fantastic. charging case is a brilliant idea lasts at least a couple of full charges before you need to charge the case.

Jay, the auto shut-off issue you raise doesn't exist - at least not now. I've just left both my transmitter and receiver on for a whole blues jam and they were still on and working after five hours. Sure, if you turn the transmitter off and leave the receiver on then after 10 minutes the receiver will turn itself off. Equally, leave both transmitter and receiver on in a silent environment and they'll turn themselves off after a bit. But provided you leave both transmitter and receiver switched on and picking up ambient sound of some sort (not necessarily loud) the rig stays 'live' for as long as it's got battery.

In addition to what you said I’ve plugged the receiver into a (50’)cable & run that to the mixing board. If it powers off the transmitter & receiver are close to me & easily turned on quickly. Haven’t tried it with a 100’ cable but I think it would work.

I have been using the Cloud Vocal Prime for about a year now. It's a pretty good mic but definitely has some flaws. One of my biggest frustrations with the mic when I first got it was how unstable the plastic clip felt on my bell (like you were showing around 2:40). One trick I discovered on accident (that Micahel appears to be doing as well) is using the clip with the "Face Down" label facing up. For whatever reason, using it this way on my sax is WAY more stable. I also wonder if his sound on the Cloud Vocal would have been improved if he used the foam windscreen. All that said, I really enjoyed this comparison. The NU-X B-6 seems like a really solid option for the price. Thanks for the video Jay.

I think a good reason for not having the Nux automatically charging, is that you don't want to store rechargeable batteries fully charged. You should store them att like 50% and only charge them fully right before you're going to use them.(Compare the way your phone doesn't charge fully over night until just before wake up time)

Really enjoyed your comparison, well done! The only minor thing that i disagree with is the case charging point that you made. I think hitting the button on the case to commence charging is just fine. Rather that than charging simply by closing the case. You may want to wait to charge a few hours before your next performance rather than beginning to charge right AFTER a show. Better control over the timing and charge retention imho. Thanks!

Great review Jay! So I bought one of these and I like it, but I have been burned TWICE on gigs with the battery in the transmitter crapping out mid-gig. The first time I discovered was the bad design flaw you noted where you actually have to press the button on the case to actually get it to charge when it's plugged into USC-C. I didn't press that button. However, last weekend, it did the same thing, and I could swear I had it charging for hours after pressing the button, and the side case LEDS for the case-charging showed all four LEDs lit green before I took the setup to the gig. What could be going on? What do you do to make sure it doesn't crap out on you? Might I have a unit with a defective transmitter battery?

So when the Nux test was done I guess it was set to the alto EQ? That might account for the slight midrange/fullness boost and better overall sound? Doesn't really matter because it clearly sounded the best, and your horn sounds fantastic (as does Michael Gehgan).

Interesting shoot out. I have been happily using a Nady Centerstage Satellite unit for several years. Looking for a back up. I went checking out the Nu-x and the Kimafun. I was disappointed to see the Nu-X does not have a mute switch, nor the ability to change channels. 2.4ghz is heavily t trafficked and venues Wifi can interfere with the connection. I use XVive in ears, and often need to change channels (6 available) so I understand the need to at least have the ability to try a few channels in the 2.4 ghz spectrum. The Kimafun does have four channels available, but honestly I don't like the design for playing out in the crowd, which I often do. I like the one piece idea, but it seems to hang way off the bell, which could spell problems on the dance floor. It seems Nady has change the mic design on my unit but is out of stock EVERYWHERE. LOL Appreciate the shoot out and all your info!

It's an oldie but goodie and not noisy at all.I just don't like having to infer red and re- signal it if someone else is on the same channel and the belt pack I have mounted with velcro on the saxes that I use most on gigs but I hate that I have velcro on my MkVI's! but I hate the belt clip more!

Although the NUX sounds great and has excellent features, it broadcasts in the 2.4 GHz band, which is the same band as many other wireless products. You cannot choose which frequency, NUX chooses automatically. Lately, I have been sharing a stage with 18 other wireless devices. 6 of these broadcast in the 2.4 band. No room for my NUX in this crowd. Sadly, I had to return it. Wow, this is a great product comparison video!

An interesting measure for a sax mic his: "How much of the rest of the band gets picked up through the mic along with your sax?" - not tested. Also, the volume that was coming out of that alto used for the testing, was not loud. If felt like the testing sax player thought he was in a public library? lol It would be nice to hear a metal mouthpiece and a triple FFF volume rather than a medium volume at the loudest. Again, full volume dynamic rather than half volume and soft being played by the tester. Also, having a discussion about multiple channel choices? Cool video! thanks.

I purchased a NUX after watching your video (about 3 months ago). I found that the auto-off function did not work for me. It would stay on during intermissions and recently the battery died after about 2 1/2 hours. So I will have to remember to turn it off during intermissions. Could it be that the ambient sound in the room is keeping it on? Also, i will try some of the charging tips mentioned in the comments.

Jay this is a great vid. Do either you or Michael have experience with the AMT Q7-LS system? I have their older Wi-5 and it's getting pretty long in the tooth. I want to replace it in the coming months and was looking at the Q7; now the Nu-X is at least on my radar, but I'm curious what you might have to say about the AMT offerings. Thanks!

I have the NUX B-6 as well as the AMT Q7-LS Wireless Mini system for sax. The AMT has 100 channels available on the UHF band -- thereby making interference a nonfactor. Although the 2.4Ghz NUX works great most of the time, I have had a couple of interference issues with it in crowded restaurants (cell phones, wi-fi, etc.), causing me to switch to another mic. As for sound... The AMT has a fuller, rounder sound than the NUX -- but it also costs 4x as much. Plus it's bigger/bulkier, which isn't an issue on alto/tenor, but it adds a noticeable amount of weight (5 oz) to my soprano -- causing me to have to use a neckstrap at times. The NUX is lighter and less obtrusive. Everything's a tradeoff. Actually, my favorite mic is my DPA 4099. Best overall sound quality in a small, lightweight unit. But, like the AMT, it's pricey.

I enjoyed this video, and the Nux system has some very nice features. Unfortunately, it doesn't have a mute button, which for me is a deal-killer; I also agree with you that the 10-minute time-out is a terrible idea. If they ever fix these fatal flaws, I will probably get one.

@@bettersax surprised that none of these microphones have an interface to a phone app where you could adjust defaults and setup for different profiles, including muting, switch on remotely through BT/WiFi, and other s/w controlled functions. Such chips are inexpensive ( ~$5 retail) and could be designed in easily. The software is also not too difficult to implement these days

Ribbons have been my favorite for saxophone for some time. While I understand why people use wireless- they don’t even come close in sound. Thin, ‘tinny’ and ‘brittle’ to my ears. Of course, like mentioned, some EQ can alleviate much of that and in a loud setting, might be really hard to hear much difference. So the wireless advantage could certainly be worth the sound change.

I bought mine and haven't been out with it for a field test yet, but I noticed with some basic tests at home that you should not put close to a 2.4 GHz router. As I don't have much space, I play close to my work computer, the router was sitting on the same desk close to where my zoom H5 was standing, connected to the receiver. The interference was really noticeable. I couldn't get a clear signal if I moved as far as 10 Ft from the receiver. I disable the 2.4 Network and left only the 5G, and things got way better. So, be aware of this. They mention it in the manual, but who reads the manuals, right? It's like a side note, not even in bold saying to stay at least 2 meters away. Be aware of that as it is a clear limitation that can affect home users like myself and many others.

The following just my experience for you guys as a reference. I am a saxophone street player from Taiwan, I have bought NUX B-6 when it's just been announced but I returned it back after the first time I use it on street, B-6 is not working normally on a crowded place, because too much microwave interference that will caused B-6 on and off seriously. Actually the sound quality is good for saxophone, but better be used inside of house without microwave interference.

Hey Paolo..great question. I use those mics all the time as well. Yes, they are a higher quality sound and wireless reception, specifically made for large venues and microphone movement around the stage. We're also talking about a significant price difference and a belt pack. I love not having a belt pack for smaller gigs.

Hi Paolo, I had the possibility to compare the NUX and the CLOUDVOCAL with SD Systems LCM89, LDM94 and AMT LS mics. In my ears NUX and CLOUDVOCAL are good mics with a very good sound in this price range and great features like the CLOUDVOCALS integral effect section, very good for playing solo with playbacks or in small clubs, where you have a limited amount of wireless systems in use. But on bigger and loud stages with a lot wireless and in ear systems in use I would prefer the more expensive AMT or SD Systems in combination with UHF wireless systems due to better feedback resistancy and great, natural sound. And the UHF frequency range is less vulnerable ref. drop-outs and interferences when using many wireless systems due to a larger bandwith.
