    Likewise here in the UK, AKG have always been a reliable choice - I've tried them all, Shure, Sennheiser etc. I've used AKG regular mics for studio recording over a 40 year period, and now with digital wireless units, its an obvious choice for reliability and quality. Great review Doug, sensible and informative reporting without annoying background music. Many thanks!

    THANK YOU THANK YOU DOUG!! I’m gravitating closer to AKG, and getting away from the Shure & Sen. and your video gives a lot of info and clarification.soon all of my audio will be AKG. Even to using wireless AKG guitar transmitter. I’m desperately in need of a question answered . Doug, the instrument wireless transmitter that you mentioned in your video is the way I want to go. My question is... do I need an separate system for everything mic’d? Can I have have a headset microphone and a guitar / MKG L CABLE signaling to 1 PT Body pack transmitter, at the same time? Or do I need separate frequencies What I’m trying to do, is work off of 1 SR45.? I like the idea when I’m not singing I can switch over to the MKG L and go wireless guitar. I’m tring to eliminate 1 out of the 2 cable mess when rocking vocals and guitar. if I can knock out both by using one receiver and one PT45 that’ll be cool. I know I would save the trouble and purchase $100 instrument AKG but, if I can save a few bucks .... I’m in! Thank you so much agin for all your videos. A fan & Subscriber Raul R. from Oceanside Ca.

    Each thing being mic'd has to have its own separate transmitter and receiver. Unless the receiver, like the DSR 800, has multiple receivers in one chassis. That's pretty uncommon, though, and tends to only appear on the top-of-the-line units. The lower-end models (like the Perception series) don't let you choose specific frequencies so generally speaking you can only use one on each frequency band so you have to be a lot more careful about selecting radio bands when purchasing to make sure you don't overlap. But when you get into the higher-end models you get more flexibility in being able to select the specific frequencies, which allows you to run more systems in a given radio band. The WMS 450/470, for example, typically allow about 12 systems in a single band, depending on how much of that band is unoccupied. When you get into the 4500 and 800 series those numbers go up considerably.

    Hey Doug, I think, in the meantime, I've seen all of your video's and every time I'm learning something new! So thanks again. But in all of those video's I've never seen what type op audiodelay you use. I find it hard to delay the audio for livestreaming. Sometimes you just don't know where it goes wrong. Hardware? Streaming software? KZread/Facebook. So: Do you have tips? And what delayer do you use? Looking forward to your next video!

  • @djp_video

    @djp_video

    6 жыл бұрын

    Basically, I don't have to worry about it. I usually just make sure the audio follows the same path as the video so any required delay is automatically handled by any devices in the chain. So generally speaking audio goes into a camera, which then goes through the switcher, which then goes to my streaming device. Audio stays perfectly in sync that way since it gets delayed automatically exactly the same amount of time as the video. On the occasion that audio doesn't go through a camera, I don't have to add much, if any, delay to make its sync be "good enough." My Sony cameras have very minimal delay on the SDI outputs, so even when I bypass the cameras and feed audio directly into the switcher it doesn't feel out-of-sync. (My BMD cameras are another story -- audio does need to be delayed for those.) But I understand the frustration. Software-based streaming solutions are notorious for having audio sync issues. Just one of many reasons I went with dedicated hardware instead. My Teradek VidiU hasn't ever had a problem with audio sync. If nothing else, though, you could see if you can change video frame rates to see if shooting drop frame vs. non-drop frame is causing you grief.

    Thanks for the answer. I do live events whith live acts and we get a very big cable with multiple XLR's (don't know the name for that). Audio mix left/right, but also audio return to FOH/PA (for the audio that goed with the video for the LED walls). Therefore, the audio comes in separately. But the somehow the delayer we used wasn't working well, therefore I asked you. But now I understand why you don't need a delayer. I'll just keep on searching.

  • @djp_video

    @djp_video

    6 жыл бұрын

    I do a lot of those types of events too. (The cable is called a snake, BTW.) But we just take the audio output of the mixer and feed it into one of the camera inputs most of the time. There is usually a camera closer to FOH than the switcher anyway. And when that isn't an option for whatever reason we just feed it into the switcher input. Not all cameras have a latency as low as mine, though, so I can totally understand where a delay might be required. It just hasn't been an issue for me.

    If it is a digital mixer and you are using a bus out most mixers can add a delay. If you are ganged with stereo out then not. But you can probably get the mix engineer to set it up for you if you ask ahead and it is a regular gig. I have dealt with it personally, but not in a livecast situation. I just fix it in post. You should also record some room ambiance if you can. Off the board tends to be EQed wrong because the sound is tailored for the room. A good engineer will avoid hyping room modes and so on. The degree this affects you depends on how much work the audio engineer is doing at the board, and how much is handled by outboard EQ etc. I know I advise people that my board sound is horrible, but I constantly get complements on having the best sound ever in rooms I mix in. That is particularly true of troublesome rooms. And FWIW I use a combination of mix console and outboard gear. In most situations I suggest you at least set up a couple of condenser mics and record the room itself even if you get a board mix. Use some height to get away from location noise and people talking. Even point your Cardioids up a bit. Delay align your board feed to that room sound. If your engineer is good, they will already be using a lot of delay to align acoustic and electronic sound. If they cant figure out delays and say they refuse to use compression then chances are they are just old school mixers and wont be able to help you. There are a lot of tin eared audio guys pushing faders out there who cant do much. You will probably badly want a board mix because the crossovers and speaker placement in the room are creating all kinds of comb filtering problems all over the place. Those are tough gigs.

    I have used them a bit, so I will throw in my 2 cents. Countryman or DPA are my only 2 recommendations. But be sure to check the bodypack with it because they vary a lot. You want to test the compression/decompression carefully. Sennheiser top end has the nicest. AKG is next. The Sennheiser dropout problems dont exist on their top of the line but that will run you 3x the cost of a comparable AKG. They tend to only get sold to bands on tour. The rest of us mere mortals cant get them. Sennheiser low end are bad. They seem to me to be up-sell bait, but I dont bite and neither should you. You always want at least what they call a True Diversity receiver in any brand. And mixing brands is never a good idea. They often wont play well together. The more wireless systems you have in one location the worse your over all problems will be if the radios are not really good. One old Electrovoice wireless mic can wipe out a whole bank of decent brand channels with noise. Wired mics always sound better if they are of comparable quality because there is no signal compression / decompression which all wireless mics have. Except possibly digital, which is changing the world again, but Doug already explained why they are not universal. Wired means a lot of cables, and that means setup/tear down costs, and some people complain about walking on a wired stage. For wired headsets, Rode makes a decent 3.5mm to XLR. The other thing to note is that presenter headsets and singer headsets are not the same. Sensitivity ranges differ. And you need to know how to wear one to get the audio quality right. The default 'just wear it' setup is almost always wrong. You need to fit it to talent individually, The mic cant be too high/low or to forward/back. The sweet spot is really small. Sibalance and bass are the main components, but phasyness sometimes comes into play at certain frequencies especially if they are on headphones or in ears. And the mic needs to not move during performance. Even for 2 ear models I end up using surgical tape every time. So as you can see the talent should consider hand held or stand held if at all possible. Plan on spending $2000 per channel and much patience for every gig to get it working well.

    Hey Doug, I'm about to purchase a new wireless microphone and would like to hear your opinion on Sennheiser (ew500) vs AKG WMS4500... Which one would be better in terms of sound quality and reliability. I've been using Sennheiser wireless EW500 for many years with great success but give the fact my newer Sennheiser D1 digital wireless system sounds so crystal clear (I can say identical to a wired version of the capsule I'm using in it) even more than the trusted EW500 which is analog, I'm just wondering how AKG wireless compete. Thanks!

  • @gotgadgets

    I haven't used that particular model of Sennheiser, but I've more or less given up on that brand for wireless systems, mainly due to too many dropouts and general instability in the past. I've also been to countless concerts where, if there were issues with the wireless system, it was always a Sennheiser product. They may have fixed that... I can't say for sure... but back in the day when I was still using systems from pretty much all brands regularly, AKG was always the most reliable (and had the best sound), and Sennheiser the least. I can honestly say in the two decades that I've owned and used AKG gear that I've _never_ had a dropout unless the transmitter was really far away from the receiver. In my mind you buy AKG for wireless reliability and sound quality, Shure for the most rugged systems and the best support from the manufacturer, and Sony for a balance between the two.

  • @mprz8188

    Doug Johnson I get your point. Now, digital vs analog, is there that huge difference in sound quality? Say DMS800 vs WMS4500.... For instance, EW500 G4 (new generation) is at the same price as the AKG WMS 4500... Again, Sennheiser has a particular sound and as you mentioned earlier, tends to suffer from poor transmission reliability.

  • @gotgadgets

    @gotgadgets

    6 жыл бұрын

    That depends. For the best analog systems, they're pretty close to the sound you get from digital. If you're dealing with the value products, not so much. I use my DMS800, DMS700, WMS4500, and WMS450/470 systems together all the time and they all sound great. One does have to be a little bit careful when buying a "digital" system, though, as some of them actually aren't -- they just have a digital signal that gets transmitted along with the analog, carrying metadata but no audio. If you're going digital make sure that the system actually sends a digital signal. The best way to be sure is to find out what sample rate and bit depth they're using. If the manufacturer doesn't specify, there's a good chance it isn't actually digital.

    Doug Johnson The Sennheiser system I'm currently using is the D1 (digital wireless 2.4Ghz) and my analog go to mic is the sennheiser EW500 G3. I'm trying to choose wisely and move forward in the right direction. My D1 is half the price of my EW500 and I believe it does sound better, Fuller and crisper. Shure has QLXD and ULXD systems which are digital too but those are way more expensive. What I have in mind is replacing my 4 year old EW500 system (which is absolutely immaculate and works perfect) by a better sounding and reliable system, any brand, any model within same price range (around USD 1k)

    TornadoPL The pocket receivers are only available in the higher end 4500 series. While they are technically compatible, you do still need a stationary 450/470 receiver around to configure the transmitter. (The 4500 transmitters are programmed directly on the units, not through the receivers like the 450/470). But the PR4500 models are difficult to find. When purchased new I've had to special order them, and used ones come up very rarely on eBay. Maybe one or two per year. They may be a little more readily available in Europe, but they are difficult to find (at best) here in the US.

    Even though they look similar, they're completely different microphones. The D5 will be better if feedback rejection is something you need to consider. I haven't tried that combination, but from what I understand based on a conversation with an AKG representative in the past, the 4000 series doesn't output a pilot signal that the 450/470 series are expecting to see, so the receiver won't actually enable the audio output. In other words, you wouldn't hear anything. You can go the other way, from a 400 series to a 4000 series, but because the 400 series are only programmed using IR and don't have a menu system of their own, you have to keep a 400 series transmitter around just for programming. But 4000/4500 series transmitters don't work with 400 series receivers.
