My dad was a respectfully dirty vehicle mechanic with a smell you never forget. I occasionally catch that smell in a garage that takes me right back there, reminiscent of grease and grimy overalls … he would’ve been proud his creativity rubbed off on me although now a lot cleaner in a hobby Workshop … N

Rachel, while it is great to have such a handy husband, and wonderful to be married to a good man, I encourage you to learn his DIY skills and make your own jig. The process of using power tools, and selecting nuts and bolts, and cruising the aisles of Home Depot, will enhance your knowledge of jewelry making and lift it from a craft level to a serious machinist level. As a woman myself, I had to learn all this and free myself from dependency on others. Are you helpless in the kitchen? I bet not! You are probably skilled in domestic arts. Be skilled in other areas too, as each skill on one area, advances skills in another area. Plus it is a form of female empowerment. If any girls or women watch you working with power tools, they also feel responsible to learn how to do it themselves. It may seem daunting but its really easy. We cannot go back to 1950's when were relegated to the kitchen, expected to marry, bear kids, and please our husbands. We fought hard for that right. Don't lose it. I have the pleasure of knowing that I am miles ahead of my Ex husband, and adult son in every DIY skill they know or don't. Plus I am skilled in domestic arts as well. A true Renaissance person. I taught my son and daughter the same skills - cooking, flipping French crepes, knitting, sewing by hand and machine, changing car oil, filter, tires, basic woodshop, DIY around the house, refinishing wood (my specialty), making jewelry and identifying gems and minerals at shows. These are skills everyone should know. Most of us learned to cook watching our mothers working in the kitchen. Watch your husband working in the garage, on the cars, fixing things. I was lucky to have a dad that was very handy and got my DIY bug from him. When I was married, I also depended on my husband, but he was not handy at all, so I bought all the tools and did it myself. I did all the cooking too, and I was earning more than him, so finally I wondered why I had a useless husband and removed him but kept the dog... and the tools! See, you can do it! Good luck at the DIY Academy.

Very clever to make a earring wire jig! Why did I not think of this? Its a pain to match them up perfectly and this solves the problem. I love your wire bending jig too, its a work of art! I have to make that. Heading over to my scrapyard today. The heavy metal top plate prevents the metal dowels from jiggling to much which is the issue with the flimsy $25 aluminum jigs on the market. Plus it looks really cool, like a machinist precision tool for metal fabrication, which is after all, what jewelry is. Also very clever to clamp some round nose pliers in a vise to get the heart shape. I can see a jig coming up for that too. You are the best, Nick! Subscribed.

thanks for your comment and sub MJ, being a production welder jigs are a crucial part of the job perfect for helping with speed and repeatability. using perforated sheet allows this peg board to be easy fabricated also really cheap if you can find offcuts. It’s surprisingly robust when clamped down and can take a bit of a bashing great for people like me who can be a bit heavy-handed sometimes when it comes to making jewellery. all the best to you … Nick

hi Hefty thanks for that, you’re right with hearts being so “in” i’m sure these would go well if I was going to focus on sales. 3,4 and 5 leaf variations are easy to achieve when drilling wood for a peg tool, I did a bit of this in a previous video kzread.info/dash/bejne/eK16krJxc7aqqdI.html I try to respond to all comments, it’s great to have some connection although they’re starting to come in thick and fast lately … all the best to you …. Very, very nice work. My only comment is I think the ear hoops (fittings) are a bit thick. I use 0.80 mm wire for my hooks.

LOVELY MUSIC ! 😍🎵 And brilliant metal work, of course. I've long since discovered that my nail files are exellent tools for making small adjustments on silver jewellery. I sometimes use a couple of tweezers too. While changing earring pendants from one type of hook to an other, if I think they make a better match... 💎💎💎💎💎💎

Nice one Nina, not an easy subject to get right being a bloke, i’ve sold a few to friends and family and they seem to be generally happy with this size and shape. if I was selling more would be good to give a few different design options … good point, I’ve never thought about sleep friendly qualities in earrings … next vid in progress … “Salt etching copper for casting” … cheers … Nick

Hi, Love that you showed how you make your jewellery. Was such an interesting and fascinating process. Could you show how you buff such intricate and delicate things too please? Love that you have made jigs and show how to make things with it. I always struggled to make 2 things remotely the same & got so frustrated I just gave up and bought them (would’ve never thought to make a jig). ❤️

Hi Mel thanks for your comment, i’ll include the polishing bit next time would be a bit more wholesome. Being a welder I’ve always made Jigs, it’s part of many production processes especially for repeatability. This simple peg jig works really well, it’s very strong and robust when clamped down. The hardest part of making this jig is finding suitable perforated steel … All the best … Nick ❤️🛠🗜🪚

hi Marie, this product called perforated metal sheet. it’s used for panelling and architectural installations. It comes in a variety of thicknesses, hole sizes, hole spacings and patterns. Some suppliers on the Internet may provide a cut to size service. Or you could try asking around local metalwork companies if they have any offcuts of this sheet material … Hope this helps … Nick

Can you use the silver solder paste on Argentinean silver?

hi Monika, I would assume that you shouldn’t use standard paste considering that there are specialist solders for Argentium including solder pastes. Rio Grande sell it in hard, medium and easy varieties … hope this helps … Nick

hi Angela, Silver solder can be used on Silver, copper, bronze and some brass wires they have to be clean and non-plated or coated. unfortunately it won’t work on aluminium wires. hope this helps … Nick

hi Richard, I tend not to close the ear wires because if they’re not right for somebody they can easily be changed. also for safety reasons if the earring is caught on something it may bend open and save the earlobe getting ripped. this is all hearsay from women who have bought my earrings … not sure if they would suit me very well … cheers … Nick
