Wire Terminals That Don't Suck - Frustration Free Connections
Ғылым және технология
In today's video I share my experience with open barrel connectors. So much easier and require only some needle nose pliers to get a decent connection. Some shrink tubing and you're left with better and more reliable connections for your Maker projects.

I was about to go and buy connectors for my speaker wires and it was going to be closed barrel, thanks now I will be using open instead.
Excellent content 😀 thanks very much
Thanks for doing the video. I have had trouble with the standard spade or wire ring connectors. No sizes work for smaller wires. These look much better.
nice i don't think i've really tried this style connector... will do that. i will say that for the normal crimping butt connectors (i guess you might call this closed barrel, maybe it's me but when i hear barrel i usually think of the 12v style power connector with a coaxial pin and grounded barrel/sleeve), i've had good luck getting a great crush using the knipex cobra pliers which have a flat area very close to the hinge so the leverage is tremendous. built in insulation does have it's appeal but maybe not quite as compact as heat shrink, and heat shrink does feel a bit more pro to me. also probably even with a good crush, closed barrel not so great for stranded wire, especially in projects with a lot of movement of the wires.

I'll check those out. Knipix has been great with their strippers.

@@MakersMashup totally. i recently got the 13 72 8 electrician's strippers... they can cut a 6-32 or 8-32 threaded bolt without chasing the threads. very nice. oh also i should have mentioned that when i crimp with the cobra, i have to be careful not to crimp too close to the edge, it crushes so hard that the edge of the crimp will shear the wire. that's power!
I use a different connector for joining 2 wires together and it has a shrink wrap built in and solder sadly I'm not home and won't be for 2 months. And I am not going to look for it when I'm doing 12-16h days 7 days a week currently. If I remember this I'll get ya the name of them though.😵

Don't sweat it. I've seen those. How did they work for you?
You can buy some wago connectors or get the chinese knockoff ones from temu at a cheaper price. They really are super cheap.

Bet the temu knockoffs disintegrate within a year.
I whack my connections with a hammer just to make sure they're good and crimped.

That's awesome and scary at the same time. I'd just have broken fingers 🤣

@@MakersMashup I've built up a tolerance. 😂
I don't get what you want to say.. putting the cable that's maybe 20, 22 AWG into a blue crimp which are normally for 14 to 16 AWG?!? Sure it doesn't work. Secondly those so called "crimp" pliers they send with the cheap connectors are totally for the garbage, if it's not meant to be an emergency repair. I can just recommend to check the website from manufacturers that invented those connectors, like Amphenol or Molex etc, then have a look at what pliers they recommend and especially how the yaws look like and then get a cheap one that not just resembles them from the far. Those first connectors are totally fine with the right tool, aircrafts still use them, well from more precise manufacturers of course.

No just used as an example the different colors of course I'm not using a wrong range. The issue partly is the range itself. 22awg in a 18-22 connector is doomed from the start. If you have a quality crimper that can crimp those properly I'd love to see it. Yes the flat ones are garbage as I pointed out but the ratcheting are OK but still hit and miss. The precision crimpers work great it's the crappy connectors that are the issue.

@@MakersMashup well I use some weidmüllers crimp pliers.. or knipex but I don't know the product code. No failure so far under normal conditions.. but if the cables are likely under tension in your application, your connector is the better choice with the extra strain relief.

I have a pair of quality crimpers that make these crimps work very well for me. I normally work in a bit thicker gauge wires but for the small stuff I just strip off twice the length and fold it over? I also order the precise size I want with m3 holes off ebay, the ones you get in a kit only carries very few of what's available. You can also get some thinner types in softer metal that works well for low current, I use them for an arcade build and they are great.
you dont like them becuase you dont understand them and youre using the wrong tool for the job. yes, uninsulated connectors are better for small wires, or where youre bunching wires together. but that doesnt make insulated connectors bad. you need to understand which ones you are using, they have nylon, vinyl and heat shrink connectos, and varying quallities of each. the same goes for crimping tools. once you learn where each connector is useful, they become great options, but youll never find one thats great in every situation.

That sounds exactly what I described in the video.
