Wipeout 2048 - Why It Was The Perfect Prequel

In this video I discuss why I think Wipeout 2048 from 2012, technically the newest game in the franchise, was the perfect evolution for the Wipeout franchise. I hope you'll enjoy it!

its my first wipeout. looking back at it the biggest flaw of it is its track selection. 10. the dlcs felt to disconnected from the main game since it only adds a different game within a game. It should have gotten at least 16 tracks minimum ngl. Its quiet a shame. AG Racer is my favorite gaming genre, yet there hasnt been a game where I really feel like "THIS" takes the crown. WipEout 2048 is awesome when it comes to ships, immersive gameplay experience music and visuals but lags content. Redout 2 is awesome when it comes to controls and visuals, but is incredible unfriendly towards casual players with its overly exhausting track design. BallisticNG has everything but nothing really shines for me.

@@philipp_mn You make some solid points. I wouldn't call Wipeout 2048 a DLC though since it is its own game. HD/Fury was for example DLC for 2048 on the PS Vita :) I agree with your assessment of Redout 2 and BallisticNG though. Thanks a lot for taking your time to write a comment!

What makes this game fun for me from a """lore nerd""" perspective is that this is quite literally the birth of a sport that is 160+ years old at the time of HD/Fury/Pulse, despite it being formally announced in 2044, if I recall.

I also think it was a great decision to make a prequel. When comparing the settings and surroundings in HD and 2048 you can really see that one is far more futuristic so I really think they nailed it from that perspective.

i enjoy how the devs paid attention to detail. the scale of racing in 2048 is much smaller than the other games. screenshots from hd showcase just how massive the ships are compared to the size of a person. Here in 2048 they feel much more grounded in reality and more realistic -fitting inside existing car lanes- its fantastic visual storytelling.

@nym5qu17 In that regard, it mirrors a similar case to F1. Cars have gotten bigger over time, whereas they were pretty small way back when. This would be a similar case, 2048 was just the beginning with its equivalent to the first F1 racers, while HD/Fury shows us the advanced race craft of 2207 and beyond.

2048 was my favorite part of The Omega Collection. Maybe it was because I played so much of Wipeout HD that it was nice to have a game that was fresh to me because I never played 2048 on the PS Vita. I loved the tracks. Some of those A+ Challenges are really difficult. I still haven’t passed all of them. I would love to see what could be done with Wipeout on the PS5. I hope it happens someday.

The game you are referring to is probably either Wipeout Pure or Pulse. They are both great experience even by todays standard but Pulse might be the better pick because of the campaign grid that was absent in Pure. 2048 for the Vita is also an awesome game but the PS4-version is obviously superior if you aren't on the go, especially thanks to the 60 fps upgrade. I really enjoyed my time with 2048 on Omega Collection- it did a great job presenting an entirely new wipEout experience, the presentation was absolutely gorgeous, and the prototype ships are all extremely fun to play around with. That said, I think the progression system was actually my biggest issue with the game- I set out to rank up enough to unlock the Pir-Hana prototype, but I didn't have enough XP to do so even after elite-passing literally every other event in the game. Grinding those last few levels for the prototype and its event slowed down greatly without the bonus XP from new events, and it kinda became a bit tedious grinding completed campaign events to finish up the game. As a side note, playing wipEout Fusion again for the first time in a while has given me a new appreciation for the skill cuts in this game. Fusion's skill cuts are cool in their own right and some are really hard to find, but most of them are a bit jank and require you to open a door that actually never had collision, or boost over a pit where falling may or may not be faster than the main route regardless.

  • @AGRacingCentral

Since I haven't completed all A+ challenges myself, I actually wasn't aware of that problem, that's a bit of a miss for sure. In the Vita version it was done on purpose to force players online but since the online XP in Omega Collection isn't connected to the single player campaign, it makes little sense. I agree though, obviously, that 2048 is a great game and, like you said, the skill cuts are perfectly implemented too. Thank you for raking your time to write your lengthy comment!

As much as I love the more modern versions of Wipeout I still don't think they can match the atmosphere of W1 and especially W 2097. There was something about those darkly lit night tracks esp in 2097, the thumping 90s dance music and that robotic sounding voiceover that made it such an unbelievable visceral experience that I didnt get the same feeling playing following games of the series.

I can see why you think so if you are coming from the "F-Zero spectrum" of AG racing. The crafts are more glued to the track in those games and can feel a bit more snappy to control. I'd say that once you get over the initial barriers, the Wipeout controls feel really exact and intuitive too.

It was the right decision to increase the experience gain in the PS4 version to give players the option of not having to play online. And yes, I've also spent a lot of time on the A+ challenges, those bad boys are extremely challenging :)

Mirage was meant to be responsible for MagLock technology(i.e. making tracks work against gravity too, somrthing you see in WipEout pulse and HD). But in 2048 there's maglovk, and Mirage was made during the events of WipEout Pulse. Undeniably, though, its a great game. Its just foreshadowes by the Psvita's somewhat mediocre success.
