The "main guy" is Jari Mäenpää, and if you listened to Ensiferum early 2000, he was lead vocal, and you can hear his influence on the music at that point too. He writes these masterpieces. :)

@@aeldin131 Black metal usually deals with the occult and spirituality, but it doesn't have to. The band Carach Angren for example tell ghost stories and folklore with a black metal sound. It's far more atmospheric and thematic music. Explore Carach Angren with Haunting Echoes from the Seventeenth Century. Black metal bands wear costumes with face paint and makeup to look spooky and scary. The vocal style sounds witchy in comparison, like Jari's vocales here. There is also more blast beats, constant snare hits and the tuning of the guitars tends to be more flat. In death metal the musicians don't wear costumes. There tends to be more gore and violence in death metal lyrics as well, but it depends on the band. Fleshgod Apocalypse for example is a Death Metal band that does wear costumes with an overall theme. Think of it this way. Black metal is The Conjuring while Death Metal is Halloween. All in all, there is a band for everyone.

You should also check other two songs from same album Time and Land of Snow and Sorrow both live rehearsals at Sonic Pump Studio. Album is titled Time 1 and that is hint for concept. Time 2 album has been coming since this album, but wait and see. Also Forest Seasons album is really great with four songs: Awaken From the Dark Slumber (spring), Forest That Weeps (summer), Eternal Darkness (autumn) and Loneliness (winter) all official lyric videos. First album is Wintersun and there is also really great songs like Death And Healing, Starchild, etc.

This song (and the whole album it's from) is a musical masterpiece. Wintersun is amazing. One of my favorite bands easily. I've seen them live before and everyone just sings along. It's a great time. By the way...the drummer in this video is the current drummer for Nightwish. Definitely recommend "Loneliness" (there's a lyric video, I think) and "Time" (studio session like this one).

In Finnish storytelling lore it is common to not to have happy endings, just stories. It’s a conscious separation from Hollywood’s obsession with happy endings. Also it gives you a better understanding on the minds of people of forest and lake.

So many comments, I probably have nothing to add which wasn't said. Your point that the song mixes many different styles and subgenres, bringing contrast of them, keeps the long song alive and interesting: yeah, that's my feeling exactly. Really likes that layered singing there, and Jari has beautiful clean vocals. Nice pirate song! BTW, there's apparenltly lots of new Wintersun music coming. I heard Jari has written material for several abums, but he hasn't publish them, forgot what was said the reason but obviously lot more to come. I'd recommend band called Smackbound in the meanwhile. The dark haired guitarist Teemu Mäntysaari of this video is also in that band. The band was started by its vocalist Netta Laurenne (former name Dahlberg) who is also an actress and has played roles in some Finnish TV-series but also has studied singing, written songs for other artists and made solo albums. And also Rolf Pilve from Stratovarius is in the band. They have published one album (20/20 is the name) so far, but just heard from Netta that they are writing their second one as we speak. For example, "Drive it like you stole it" is an energetic, fierce song, while "Wind and Water" is a soft ballad mixed with agressive metal and heart ripping raw vocals also. Every song in the album is just very good and Netta has this enjoyable raspy rock voice.

Прямо как герой повествования, Алена прошла путь от "I'm confused" до принятия экстрим-вокала. :D P.s Респект Brad за упоминание значимости дуалистичных гитар в общем звучании, мало кто обращает внимание на этот элемент.

Yes! More people to doscover this masterpiece. The amount of work had been put into making this one must be incredible. I bet some other bands, can make enough tunes, that have zero musicality, to make a full album for comparable time . The whole song is not so abstract to my ear. It is about wandering soul, looking for home. It could be warrior, or sailor, i suggest latter, for number of reasons. Vikings been famous for sailing. Sons of winter and STARS. Sailors navigate by stars, even today you can do it, if your GPS went off. In vikings time it was probably the only way to navigate. The chant - "the way of the ocean grind so strong". The chanting on it's own - it is not chants of warriors ashore, as they have no chance to chant for a prolonged period, while at the sea, you have plenty of time, especially reminds me of oarsmen. The wind - Scandiavian countries are having different topology, but its more hills, than plains. In hills ypu have less winds, in plains more. In sea you are open to all winds. All this link up, and you got the licture of sailor and warrior. If you enjoyed this one then Time from same rehearsal session is another great one👍😀

Hey guys! Just subscribed to your channel and i'm really enjoying your content. I've seen you done some death, symphonic, progressive and power metal, so how about some doom metal? Pallbearer - Worlds Apart. No video for this one, but the music speaks for itself.

Thanks Khorne! Appreciate the kind words! We do want to ultimately cover the full scope of metal so of course we'll need to do some doom at some point. Thanks for the suggestion :)

Wintersun is one of my favourite bands, great video guys! I would like to suggest that y'all check out BABYMETAL if you guys dont know about em or have listened to em already its a Japanese Kawaii metal band that does a mix of Pop & Metal, on paper it shouldn't work but it just does so damn well, I suggest you guys check out their song called Road of Resistance which will most likely remind you of a certain band. ;) Thank you! I'll link the song here for you: kzread.info/dash/bejne/rIh5u7d_l6_clbw.html

Seen it, but not a metal song. Some kind of pop with some part of harch vocals. A lot of humor that clearly are why it is popular. But not for metal reaction though. Only my opinion, of course 😊

Aah okay, I didn't know that. I actually googled it now and turns out that locally, Scandinavia doesn't include Finland but in the rest of the world, Scandinavia is the term used to mean the Scandinavian Peninsula and thus includes Finland. At least that's what Wiki says! :D I guess we should rather use the term the locals use though. Would Northern Europe or Nordic Countries be a better term to include Finland?

Yes. Scandinavian peninsula means only Norway and Sweden. In cultural contects you can add Denmark. Nordic is a good word.

Thanks. I'll need to break a life long habit now but I'll try my best to say "Nordic" instead, when including Finland. Thanks for teaching me! :)
