    That was what my family told me too, just cull them come winter. Yet I see no volunteers to help me with that process 😂 Side note, I do seriously understand the struggle about being the one to do it. I still struggle with it every time, it doesn't come easy and hasn't really gotten easier for me. But I am generally "soft" of heart so idk if I'll ever get entirely over the emotional difficulty.

    @@h.s.6269 probably not, it’s really not in humans to take a life, but if you’re hungry, you’ll do what you must. Quail I understand, normally don’t live past 6 yrs and those are old quail. I believe that quail are meant to preserve life of either a predator or a human being, but I certainly understand your apprehension. I’m not sure I can do it either.

    Two other water options for cages in winter: 1) I always used plastic cat/dog bowls that had rounded edges, and I just filled them twice a day. They freeze, but because of the shape they act like an icecube tray. So I would pop the ice out and toss it outside the door of the shed. 2) I have small reptiles hot spot heaters (like 6"x6") that put out about 8 watts, they are thin and meant to stick to the underside of a terrarium, so they fit nicely in cages under a quart plastic waterer. Sort of like a mini water heater that you would use in an aviary.

    My cages are in a mostly uninsulated shed. We have a recirculating system that has a birdbath heater in the bottom bucket with the pump. It pumps warm water continuously through all the piping so they do not freeze and the birds drink often enough from the cups so they rarely freeze beyond a few ice crystals. They WERE going to be outside so they have solid walled sandbox rooms to lay in as well, helping to keep the eggs from freezing and keep them clean as well.

    I put news papers on the bottom of my cage and then strew and some leafs. They really like that and of course a box with strew to hide in if they want. I use plastic water containers and just trade out if it gets cold. I'm out there 4 times a day checking on my birds they watch for me. They are happy.

    @@bluegrass4840 I 100% recommend rabbits for sustenance. They are very easy to care for, reproduction begins around 6 months, gestation is about 30 days, and when the kits (young rabbits) are around 8-10 weeks old they are around 5lbs and ready to be given their final destination (breeder, feeder, pet, sell, etc).

    Will cold temps affect their ability to lay eggs? Will they lay at all if it is too cold? (its been in the 40's here pretty often) I have them on the ground in a barn stall. They seem to be doing well. They are almost 10 weeks old and still haven't started laying eggs. Have plenty of feed, water, and free-choice calcium.

  • @VeysPlace

    Yes, they need times of darkness, so they can rest. Keeping lights on 24/7 will bring their stress levels up, and drop the production levels.

    Hey Zach!, Do you or could you have a video on if you can keep Quail with Chickens?, I have a large pen and I was wondering if I could keep Coturnix Quail with my Chickens, I don't have to large of breeds, My only large breeds are Favorelle's and Lavender Orphingtons, I mostly have Silkies and smaller breeds such as Modern Game's, Thank you!

  • @VeysPlace

    @VeysPlace

    2 жыл бұрын

    It isn't a good idea to keep the quail with the birds, unless the quail are in cages, where the chickens can't get to them. Things that chickens carry, is usually too high for quail to be immune to. Now if the chicken are scratching the quail litter, that could be okay. Just make sure that the top of the quail cage fights against their tendency to roost on top of the cages.
