    Happy Gregorian new year, and if you go out to eat or drink today remember that everyone working there is not having a relaxing holiday even if they’re pretending to be happy! And until something is done federally to fix the tipping problem, tip those people well when appropriate.

    I agree. If it helps though, my head-cannon is that after the collapse, much of the city was evacuated and the city was essentially abandoned, save the college perhaps, and people are only now starting to return or recently returned after there were no more disasters. But still, even if it's been only 25 years instead of 100, you'd expect more emergent infrastructure.

    I feel like Skyrim probably doesn't follow our calendar system precisely. While they have a similar period comprising their year, I imagine they probably celebrate the ringing of a new year on a different date than the Western Civilizations of Earth, kind of like how China and a couple other countries celebrate their new year on a different day. TL;DR technically New Year's is a regional holiday, and Austin is working outside the regions that celebrate it. For the folk of Skyrim it's just another Morndas.

Even cities completely flattened by WWII were mostly rebuilt within a decade or two. This is like if, say, Hiroshima was still to this day mostly empty of people, and hadn't bothered even cleaning the rubble from the wrecked buildings, much less building new houses, while people who were born decades after the war complained about how the war wrecked their city.

    I've always thought there's a ripe market to establish a blacksmith's forge in Winterhold. There's plenty of ore in the hold in general, and there's a mine just down the road which is essentially part of the town. Seems like it would be a boon to the local economy to set up a blacksmith there. Also, since magic and alchemy rub shoulders a lot (and mages need lots of restore magicka potions), an alchemist's shop ought to find a ready-made clientele with the college right there. Get those things going and then you have more taxes going to the local government (which can then do things like, for example, hire more guards, who can patrol the town and its outskirts and make it safe enough that farms can be set up in the environs of the town), and perhaps you attract the khajiit merchants to make the town part of their trade routes since there will be more to buy and sell there. There's room for Winterhold to rebuild itself, there just doesn't seem to be the will to make it happen.

  • @SorowFame

    @SorowFame

    Maybe they do it specifically so Khajiit don’t show up, Nords can get pretty racist, especially to the north-east, and frankly given Winterhold’s Jarl I wouldn’t put it past him to sabotage his own economy because he thinks it the cats show up they somehow collapse what’s left of Winterhold.

    I think Nelacar kind of counts as self-employed. The two retired guys, I think only one of them is actually retired and the other is his servant, so employed. Also you missed Phinis Gestor, one of the teachers in the college. Also Enthir, who's... I mean he seems to be part of the faculty, who just happens to do some shady stuff on the side.

    I would LOVE to see this series carry over into Oblivion once you wrap up your findings with Skyrim. Maybe don't jump straight into the Imperial City (unless you're REALLY ambitious), but instead start off with a smaller town like Leyawiin or Cheydinhal (or even Bruma, which would actually make the most geographical sense coming from Skyrim) to get a sense of the regional populace and attitudes. The way NPCs behave and interact in that game makes them feel like prime targets for a direct survey from the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

    this is the most surreal kind of video to run across and I'm all for it. There's creative ideas, and then there's bringing the day to day grind of the real world to video creation and making money off of it. Not bad. You're Employed.

    there is a difference between a slowly withering city, which is where unemployment is usually at its highest, and tiny villages, where the population is so small the residents have to basically do everything themselves. Winterhold is firmly in the latter, and in that situation it's less about employment and more about just working for survival

    The disaster in the “not too distant past,” happened almost 80 years prior to the direct survey done this past week. Most of the present residents of Winterhold were born after the disaster. With nearly a century to clear debris and rebuild, I’m not all that sympathetic when I see abandoned, damaged structures being left to decay instead of being demolished for reconstruction.
