This was beautiful! I love cardinals, they’re so cute, and you did an excellent job! Oftentimes the male cardinals overshadow the females, but you demonstrated in this painting why/how the female cardinals are beautiful too, they have such nice colours. One thing that you may not have noticed is that female cardinals have red eyebrows!! I’m not joking! I know they’re not real eyebrows, but you should search images of female cardinals and you’ll see what I’m talking about, they have red lines where their eyebrows would be- they’re soooo cute!

Très joli, bravo.
The way to get around that transparent base coat on the Cardinal is to basecoat the Cardinal out in white first and then go over the top of it. White , black and gray are excellent undercoats depending upon what colors you're using going back in over the top.

I prefer color as underpainting level. It's giving more lightweight to feathers, some of the feathers on the edges of the bird body can be half-transparent. If I ll paint more dense objects - fruits, cups etc - I ll choose white/sepia underpainting
The red bird is a male......he. The other bird is a female ........she. If these r cardinals the brightest one is always a male. Hope this helps u.
