In reality the Germans first mocked the Soviets in Finland and then froze in the USSR. Neither USSR in 1939. nor Germany in 1941. had sufficient experience to organize a large scale offensive in such freezing conditions with poor infrastructure and it was a learning curve for both, except the Soviets contented themselves with minimal victory just as they began to work things out because they were worried the Germans might attack them, while later the Germans bled dry before the experience they gathered might help them win the war...

@@andrewwalter7991 Stalin knew that an invasion was most likely coming in 1941, but not exactly when and how. And there were many false calls while Staling kept convincing himself that the British were somehow provoking him into a war with Germany. Stalin knew that the Red Army was not ready for a war with Germany in 1941, which is why he tried to deny the writings on the wall. When it came to the Winter War, it was different. If one only compares the available forces of either combatant, the Soviets had a huge advantage, and Stalin knew as little about fighting in winter among thick forests and marshes as most other Soviet officers up to the high command. Any surviving good officer commanding troops in Siberia could have told him what was to come, but they likely didn't dare to lest they be executed.

@Konstantin Vesselovskii In away yes, but don´t forget year 1809 when Tsar had to buy the peace from Finns. Russians had a control over coast line, because Swedish (mostly Finns) were fighting else where and those left in Finland were ordered to retreat to Sweden. And yet no army standing against Russian army they couldn´t take the whole country. Not even with the help from Finnish Sprengporten former Governor - General of Finland and those other Finns who had offered the country to Catherine the Great. The ordenary Finns kept fighting the Russian army. Conclusion: If the red army had taken over Finland it would have been only start of querrilla war, but in this time againts whole nation. You just don´t get it, we had already sent kids to other northen countries so that we could fight to the last man. If you know Finnish history you know that in Finland "to the last man" really means that. So we both should thank the god that red army couldn´t take Finland.

All of them wanted to get rid of the Sweden. One or two of the them died before the war (executed ). Only the common people did not except the idea. And they fought against Russian army. We know for sure because the Officers of "Anjalan liitto" signed the petition to Russians. And some officers surrendered with out fighting when Russian troups game. In Brazil, whatsoever people know about times the Second War is the clashes between Japan, Germany, and Italy against the allies. Rarely the brave and courageous Finland is remembered for the fights against Russia to defend its independence and freedom. When I taught History in my country, Brazil, I always emphasized the fearsome war that Finland choose to defend its territory, which army was very little in comparison with the Soviet Army. Although was a disparate confront, Finish soldiers had halted the Russian offensive and placed the Soviet army in a fix, severing its logistic chain and dislodging the Russian Army in several areas, by several times. Finland, which by then nobody believed to be a doable adversary of Russia, showed to all world that was able to solve a bunch of military challenges, expel and halted the Russian intruders, and transforms their country into an impassable fortress. Finland is an example of courage and determination. I love the Finnish people and I taught my pupils to respect and love this commendable nation. Long live to Finnish people!!!!!

Another great upload! I love anything involving Finland. Also, anyone interested in the Continuation War might find Tuntematon Sotilas a good read. My father in law (who is Finnish) said the English translation does a good job at staying true to the feel of the writing. I can't speak Finnish (except for some basic phrases and swear words lol) so I wouldn't know. But the book was very interesting, it gave an interesting perspective on the war. Especially the struggle of the Karelians who were in the thick of it fighting for their homes. The 2017 film of the same name was fairly true to the source as well, and I think the lead actor did a great job at portraying that Finnish breed of tenacity called sisu. I highly recommend them both 🇫🇮💙

It was the second largest city in the country with an identity all its own. But economically? Realpolitik-wise? Not too sure another big batch of poverty ridden land with dilapidated infrastructure is what we need. As new generations arise, the memories of the lost city grow ever dimmer. I recall shortly after USSR fell Russia tried, in fact, to sell some of the land back - without success.

@1 1 Indeed, that would be the Swedish name. I think much of it is just a bit of "football hooliganism" aroused by the particular fight in this video - it's got the status of something of a legend within Finnish culture, and I suppose quire rightfully so. Most people do, upon even a bit of reflection, admit that it is rarely the winning party in a war that gives up a significant chunk of their territory :D

Well no, the Syrian War actually might be the best documented war ever since. Problem lies at a political level, since it already starts with the name of the war: Imho it is less of a "civil war", as it is a proxy war. The question if it started as part of the Arab Spring is too hot, since the Arab Spring was more of a coordinated secret intelligence mission of western countries than a real uprising of the people aka "civil wars". The topic is dangerous ground for any KZread channel if you ask me.

@Вхламинго Swedish and West coast Finns / Finns proper ( Suomalaiset or the *сумь* as they were referred to by the slavic Novgorodians ) had a mixed settlement and culture since the Iron age, beginning around 500 AD. They were Swedish allies long before being incorporated to Swedish kingdom from 12th century onwards. Today's Staraya Ladoga on the southern shore of lake Ladoga started off as a trading post with mixed Swedish/Finnic ( most likely Karelian or Vepsian ) settlement. The Eastern traderoutes to the Byzantine and the Abbasid Caliphate were controlled by the Swedes and Finnics before the emergence of Kievan Rus in 900s. There's a lot of Archeological evidence to support that. EDIT As the Kievan Rus seized the Eastern trade from the Finns, Russian language in trade came to replace Finnish, and the Finnish tribes via the river systems of Northern Russia would start adopting Russian. Finnic tribes would still be quite instrumental in the early stages of Novgorodian Republic.

And only some of the signatories to the treaty had a Slavic name. But that doesn´t mean that they were Slavs there´s a lot of Karelians and Ingrians with russian surname in Finland and Finns with Swedish names . ( Michael Agricola was a finn but had latin name. He had also Fnnish name Mikael Olavinpoika.) @Konstantin Vesselovskii That promise was echos of 1921 rebellion in Eastern Karelia area in USSR where local Karelians started uprising against Soviet forces to create independent Karelia. Some Finnish volunteers participated to it also on side of Karelian rebels. Rebellion was crushed by Soviet forces and that led to thousands of refugees from Eastern Karelia to flee to Finland to escape retribution of Soviet forces. Mannerheim sympathized lot with refugees and Karelian insurgents and that led him to promise to help Eastern Karelians. There was not much begging done by Hitler towards Finland as it was firmly agreed between Finnish and German politicians that Finland and Germany will be co-operating in war only if Soviet Union starts war against Finland and that happened on 25th of June 1941 when Soviet air force bombed multiple cities in Finland. On that same evening Finnish parliament acknowledged that Finland was in state of war with Soviet Union. Mannerheim gave his Sword Scabbard Declaration only on 11th of July 1941 when war had already been going on almost a month.
