Winter Survival Overnight -7 Fahrenheit (-21 Celsius) (Siberian Log fire)

I go out into the Ohio Woods to enjoy an overnight in Sub-zero temperatures. My dog, Spirit, comes out to be with me and I put the Siberian Log Fire to the test.
For information on classes and scheduling go to: waypointsurviv...
The backpack I'm carrying is the Savotta Jaeger which is now called the Savotta Jaakari in the medium size. You can purchase it here: www.lamnia.com...

    This video deserves more views for the fire if nothing else. An all night long fire in THAT cold you don't have to tend to? That's worth the weight of that saw.

    Thought I’d check out some of your older videos. Very interesting fire. Seemed to work well. That looks like a WW II German army hat (feldmutze) that you are wearing and, I wouldn’t be surprised if your wool pants were also German. Along with my CW re-enacting I also do WW II re-enacting as a German soldier (soldaten) in the 2nd Panzer Division, which was actually an Austrian division. Also love Hormel chili. Good video.

    Very true Mark. I wouldn't drink water from a creek if I didn't have to.but it's good to know these things.i almost froze to death one night in a cold February night. With all the dry mesquite wood surrounding me I didn't think about gathering wood and staying warm all night instead I was thinking how much longer before the sun comes out.

    Great job but if i could suggest you might want to especially on a night as cold as this one you might want to get a fire even a small one going first just in case you develop an injury and finish sawing up the nights firewood by the light of your warm fire . Don't know if I'm a 100 % right on this issue but it would make an excellent discussion.

    That is always an excellent idea, because fire is hardest to start when you need it the most. However, I was very familiar with the area and had a couple of extra fire-starting tricks in my fire kit just in case. Still a very excellent observation on your part. Thank you.

    James, Hello! Nice, very nice, but burr b4 the Siberian fire was started. This brought back a kayaking trip I took on the Buffalo River n Arkansas, 4 days, 3 nights, not even close to being long enough for me, it was awesome, anyway, I didn’t do a Siberian log fire, too warm, but did an Indian fire (don’t know name of it) but it’s feeding long sticks/limbs into fire, it was great for my needs, cooking and a TeePee over it for drying clothes. Question...what do u were on ur feet/hands to keep them from freezing ???? I love being out n the crisp cold days, but can’t enjoy it for long (could when I was younger, but I’m 61 now) because n no time at all, my feet/hands get sooo cold they hurt. Enjoyed ur video! Thank u

    Excellent close up of what that Silky saw will do. Most people do not know what an energy saver those cut on the pull saws really are ! I absolutely love them . I have a Sugawazo fixed blade and a 650 katana boy. I also have two Corona saws that cut on the pull. One of them is a folder and the other is a fixed blade. A person can actually use any of these cut on the pull saws even when you are exhausted and can cut a nights supply of fire wood in no time.

  • @WayPointSurvival

    @WayPointSurvival

    Yes, the pull cut saws are by far the best. Once you start using them and using them properly, you won't ever want to go back to the other style.

    Nice siberian log fire, but that isn't the pot hanger mod I was refering to, I was refering to the ring around the contour on your stanley cup. It looks to be some sort of packing strap metal? but the handle joint interests me as it is clean and doesn't involve drilling the cup. The wire I am guessing is probably coat hanger wire or something but yes, do you have a video on how you made that?

    That fire turned out very well. I'll need to try that setup next time out. I noticed a lot of embers floating around your tarp and sleep system. Did any of your equipment become damaged due ti the sparks? You mentioned something about your bushcraft pack but didn't say who made it or the model. I camp down in Scioto County close to the Ohio River. In my area I see a lot of tick activity and wonder how you deal with them? I'm not sure where you are located in Ohio but I'm sure the ticks are a problem where you live to.

  • @WayPointSurvival

    @WayPointSurvival

    5 жыл бұрын

    Thanks for watching and commenting. That type of fire lay is probably one of the best out there for the winter in front of your shelter. I did have a small hole in the sleeping bag from one of the embers, but that is to be expected in harsh environments. That's one of the reasons I prefer the old school canvas sleeping bags to the newer nylon type, although I have several of those as well. The Bushcraft pack is the Savotta Jaeger from Finland which has now been re-named the Savotta Jaakari in the medium size. You can watch my review of this pack part 1 here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/Z5au0JuRe5asXcY.html and part 2 here: kzread.info/dash/bejne/i4p304-qZNTQoqw.html . The best way to deal with ticks is to do regular body checks of course and make sure you pull them out if they dig in before 24 hours has elapsed to generally avoid getting Lyme disease. I carry a cheap plastic comb for my head and try to just keep an eye the areas where ticks like to embed. Other than that you can of course spray yourself with Deet, Off, etc. but I don't like putting all those chemicals on my skin and they can cause deterioration of certain types of gear.

    Nice video . First yr we did a week snow camping trip we had buck and laplander saws, and spent most of ea day cutting wood for the night . Saw the Silky 500 on one of Lars vids on Russian Survival and the Big Boy . Those two saws cut our cutting time by over a half . The 500 is the Shit !! Laplander isn't used anymore or the bucks , have added Gomboys for trimming and we are NEVER looking back !! What is that Parka ? Guessing a Fjallraven something ? Also , did your wool pants come Gathered at the back of the waist ?! .............................................................................. Thanks ......... Gubs

    I watch many of these survival videos on youtube , most are one night maybe a week in cold weather. Then I watched some homeless videos where these people live in that hell for months and years in tents . The homeless are the real survivalists ,do this same video trying to survive on the streets for a month and I will be impressed. This is nothing but overnight camping .

  • @WayPointSurvival

    @WayPointSurvival

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yes, it's one thing to do it on purpose for practice etc., it's altogether different when you do it because you have no other option. We call it survival/training, they just call it life and it's a miserable existence. My heart goes out to all those in such a condition.

  • @billredding2000

    @billredding2000

    2 жыл бұрын

    @Mark JG: First, who cares about "impressing" you, a nobody? Second, this video is about making this kind of fire in sub-freezing conditions, has NOTHING to do with street-trash "homeless" people. So what if it's just "overnight camping?" The goal was to show how to make this type of fire and keep warm through the night. It did that. Now, what do YOU have besides airhead, condescending criticism? What would YOU do differently here, given the topic is demonstrating a Siberian Log Fire, not a discussion of homelessness (most of whom CHOOSE that sorry, pathetic "lifestyle")? ...a rhetorical question (don't answer/don't care). -- BR

    True. But then if I didn't use adequate lighting etc. it would be hard to film what I was doing for KZread. And, it wasn't a strictly primitive outing, it was really about practicing skills and surviving the cold. I am a big fan of lighters and carry one at all times. Maybe one of these days I will do a total primitive survival overnighter.
