Winter ski trip with pulk

A three days hike with skis and pulk in the beautiful Vallée de Joux in Switzerland. Starting in La Givrine, going over La Genolière, Vermeilley, Les Pralets, La Bassine, Lex Amburnex, Marchairuz, Pré de Bière, Meylande Dessus and finished in Le Brassus.

    Danke Monika! Ich hatte grosses Glück mit dem Wetter und dem Schneefall über Nacht. Das machte das Aufwachen an diesem kalten Morgen etwas einfacher. Hast du einen Rotmilan als Avatar? Dieser Vogel hat es mir nähmlich angetan. Die sind in meiner Gegend häufig zu sehen. Ein wunderschönes Tier und in der Luft sehr beeindruckend. lg - Heini

    Great video...thanks! Have pulked on a trip in Maine to Katahdin, and now with Winter actually showing up in Pennsylvania here after decades, am going to try this in one of our State Parks. Inspiring...thanks for posting! Wish we had 1/10th the snow you guys get!!

    Hallo Roger, Danke für's Reinschauen und deinen Kommentar. Für die ganz kalten Nächte benutze ich einen Carinthia, ECC Line 1000. Der hat eine Komforttemperatur von -10 Grad. Ich habe ihn schon benutzt mit Minus 17 und einmal mit Minus 22 Grad und hatte überhaupt keine Probleme. Hingegen hatte ich ihn auch schon auf Touren mitgenommen, wo er zu warm war. Das kann sehr unangenehm sein, weil man den Reissverschluss offen lassen muss und man immer zwischen frieren und schwitzen schwankt. Er ist auch viel zu schwer (knapp über 2 kg). Wo es auf's Gewicht ankommt, nehme ich meist meinen Exped 600 mit. Der geht auch ins Minus, ist aber viel leichter und kann kleiner komprimiert werden.

    Hallo Marvin, ja ich kaufe diverse Sachen im Scandinavian Outdoorshop. Die Pulka habe ich gemietet, weil es sich für mich nicht lohnt eine zu kaufen. Mal schauen, ob ich diesen Winter eine ähnliche Tour unternehmen. Danke für's Reinschauen - Gruss Heini

    Hallo Kurt, da die Bahn nur bis Le Brassus fährt und es über Frankreich zurück nach La Givrine geht, nahm ich ein Taxi. Es ginge auch mit einem Riesen Umweg über Vallorbe, La Sarraz bis Nyon und von dort wieder den Col de La Givrine hoch. Zu zweit könnte man ein Auto stellen. Das ist ja nicht sehr weit. Danke für's Reinschauen - Heini

    Great trip and video! I'm working towards equipping for such a trip. I live in the U.S. in northern New Mexico near Taos Ski Valley. Similar to Switzerland - not much flat area. Looking at ways to hook up both me and my sled dog.

    Hi Andrew, sorry for my late replay. Yes, you're right. It's an alpin setup and it was not ideal. But I normally go alpin skiing and did not want to by this nordic crosscountry skis. This would be the better choice to do such trips. Thanks for watching and your comment. - Heini

    I justed rented one trying out such trips. Unfortunatly we do not have a lot of this big, flat areas in Switzerland, where it make sense to use it. I thinks that in Canada you have better options to go with a pulk. I wish I could do once a trip in Canada. But it's far away from here... :-)

    @@heinihefti8969 its cheaper for us to fly out of country than within. Doesn't seem right. My girlfriend is from new Zealand..round trip..better part of 3000.00 Canadian. I see you carry the larger packs...you take what you want when your trekking.

    Thanks for watching and your comment. I personally use a Carintia ECC Line 1000. It's a very warm one, but also (to) heavy (2000gr.). If you buy a sleeping bag you have to look at the comfort temperature. Every sleeping bag normaly shows three temperatures (comfort-limit-extreme). A sleeping bag can be to warm, which is also not good. Then you have to open the zipper. So think about the zone/climate/temperature where you want to go. Good bags are unfortunatly very expensive. atb - Heini

    Yes, your right - it's more comfortable to sit inside and you can stand inside to put on clothes. Regards- Heini

    You can't make a fire there, right? I see that the roads were already prepared. Are all of those trails was prepared too? looks awesome! I just got back from Colorado winter hike. and nothing close on that part.

    Hi Ivan, yes outside the tent I could make a fire. But it's easier to cook with a stove. Yes, in this area there are mostly prepared tracks. It's not like in Norway oder Sweden - the area is not that big and I was walking with my alpin skis, which was not ideal. But it was a good adventures in beautiful nature.     If your skiing groomed trails with gradual turns, the straight poles are fine. Blazing trails in and around trees, tight turns is where crossed poles come in handy.

    Hi Sharron and Martin, thanks for watching! Going with a pulk and taking pictures of my own was indeed very elaborate and a new experience for me. It was very cold so that I always had the battery in an pocket of my jacket. I couldn't open the carabine of the pulk with my gloves. Without gloves they sometimes stuck to my hands (made of iron). I planned to go for 40 km in two days (first day I started in the evening). Finally I only made about 25km. I had big blisters on both of my feets. I took my Alpin skis with me, as I'm used to them and I always left the skins on it. For this kind of trips Backcountry skis would had been better. With them I would have done more meters in a descent and would have been faster in flat areas. I planned to focus manually all the time and to use my external microphone. Finally the conditions were too challenging and I was glad to have at least some usable sequences. Unfortunatly with this annoying irritations of the autofocus. It's my goal to once reach probably the quality you have in your films. But I know that isn't so easy. What you do is really professional!!! I suppose that in a more or less flat area you can easily go 30 km or more with the right equipment. My pulk was about 25kg. Cheers - Heini, Bad Ragaz, Switzerland

They are not made for warming, just as outer shell wenn you go out of the tent in deep snow (like in my video). They are made from cotton with a synthetic, vulcanised sole.     Danke, das war auch eine ganz schöne Tour im Jura. Ich habe die Fotposer im Scandinavian Outdoorshop gekauft und gleich auf dieser Tour ausprobiert. War froh um sie. Die haben sich bewährt.     Hallo Fiete, danke für's Reinschauen! Das kann ich nicht genau sagen. Das war sehr unterschiedlich. Alles in allem hatte es gegen einen Meter Schnee und am ersten Morgen war es klirrend kalt. Gruss Heini
