I've read Ursula K. Le Guin's "The Dispossessed" and I have "The Left Hand of Darkness" and her entire Earthsea series on my shelf awaiting my attention. You're absolutely spot-on with your assertion that Le Guin used her writing to, as you said, "explore our own societal norms, and challenge some of our preconceptions and our ways of understanding each other and the world." She was a tireless activist for creating a better world through the exploration of many big ideas and systems, such as (amongst others) feminism, gender and gender roles, sexuality, religion, morality, Taoism, egalitarianism, anarchism, collectivism, prison abolition, the justice and education systems, religion, community, freedom, human suffering, etc. When she died in 2018, the world lost one of its great philosophers and champions of goodness. I'm not much of a sci-fi reader, but after discovering that Lois McMaster Bujold's "The Curse of Chalion" was my all-time favourite fantasy book, I'm eager to check out her sci-fi Vorkosigan Saga, where I'll probably start with "The Warrior's Apprentice."

Le Guin sounds like such an inspirational author. I've had Earthsea on my shelves for ages but feel really intimidated to pick it up for some reason! Ohh I remember you talking about The Curse of Chalion. I need to pick that one up!

Great choices Ellie. Loved Left Hand of Darkness and it began a long love of her work in general for me. Who Goes Where is such a fantastic and iconic story and absolutely love what John Carpenter did with it. Great video.

Hi Ellie, Merry Christmas. I love books based in the Antarctic or other snowy settings. I'm not much of a Sci fi reader but would be willing to try it. The Thing is a great film so I may try the book. Interesting list.😊

Merry Christmas 🎄❤ I'm not much of a Sci-Fi reader either, but might try and read a few more next year. It might be fun to try something a little different 😊 Thanks for watching and commenting 🥰

I was going to mention Ascension! That's a good one, I loved it 😊 A few other cold/wintery scifi books on my TBR: Pina (self-pub I think) by Bernadette Richards, The Three Body Problem by Cixin Liu (1st in trilogy), and The Martian by Andy Weir (not "winter" but still chilling and isolated).

Some interesting books, I haven’t read any of those books, I must admit that sci-fi is not a topic I tend to read, but I might try a few in 2024. 😘😘

On top of my head I know at least two books that have a wintery or at least cold feel to them. One is the recent published "Plutoshine" by Lucy Kissick, which I only read a few months back and thought was really great. And the other one is "Pushing Ice" by Alastair Reynolds which luckily is one of his stand-alone novels so it wouldn't require jumping into a series immediately.

Evening Ellie, hope your week's going well? If you don't mind Warhammer 40k Lukas the Trickster is a fun winter sci-fi book. It's set on the planet Fenris which is so cold and snowy it's classed as a death world. I'm the same as you in wanting to read more sci-fi. I was really lucky earlier in the year as everyone bought me sci-fi books for my birthday so I have a nice collection to start with. I found the booktube channel Words in Time really useful, it has lots of best sci-fi type lists. I was so happy seeing The Thing in your video, it's one of my favourite films.

Hi John 😊 My week has been busy (as always) but I've finally gotten over my nasty cold which is a relief. Thanks for asking. I hope you are doing well? I like Warhammer! I'll check that one out, thanks for the recommendation. "So snowy it's classed as a death world." You can't get more wintery than that! You will have to let me know your thoughts as you read through your sci fi collection. Thanks for the YT recommendation, I'll head over and subscribe. Yes! The Thing is awesome! One of my favorite films too 😆

@@bibbidibobbidibooks glad you're over the cold and feeling better. I'm good thanks. I like getting my Warhammer books on audible, they are so well made and always have great narrators/voice actors. So far I've read some Arthur C Clarke (Childhood's End, 2001: A Space Odyssey), John Wyndham (The Midwich Cuckoo's, The Day of the Triffids, The Chrysalids) and I started The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, I've enjoyed all of them so far. I hate it when a new film format comes out because I know I'll have to buy The Thing again, I've got it on dvd, bluray and 4k 😄

@@johnbeasley3258 good to know, I'm always on the look out for good audiobooks. I've read The Day of the Triffids (who doesn't love killer plants) and the first Hitchhiker's Guide book. I love Douglas Adam's humor. I'll have to try Arthur C Clark!

We lived in Hollywood too fast a time. Now quiet extras in a bored cafe, our phone screens make our faces black and white; the modern human mourning former fame. It’s time to flee this monotone burlesque with stolen boas, stolen fedoras. Which microphone will hear our happy breaths? panting when we leap back into color. Oh, Sunlight fund the studio within; a theater that our grief and joy has built. Let’s help the angels find their seats again. They want to watch our introspective film. Forget you’re acting. Take the chance to live, and smile when you rip prewritten scripts
