I've been watching a number of pruning instruction videos for my peach tree. Most talk only about the platform and taking the branches that rub, acute angles, and reducing the foliage and opening the middle. This the first one I've seen that answered my questions. I now have an understanding of cutting technique, precisely where to cut and why, just so much information that I am delighted to have found it. This video is terrific.

My approach to pruning, while generally similar to your own, varies in a couple of ways. The techniques I employ have been applied to fruit trees that were at least 20 years old when I bought my place on Oregon's south coast 48 years ago. So the phrase, 'tried and true', most certainly applies. Because I have standard apple, plum, and Asian pear trees, their tendency to produce vigorous growth is borne out every year, with new growth anywhere from 18" to over 36". So it is imperative to cut way back, leaving anywhere from 3 to 5 leaf buds, otherwise the branches would become too whippy and incapable of supporting fruit, as you have pointed out. The direction which these buds face is typically outward so the center of the trees are open to sun and air movement. Where I deviate from your approach is where I make the cut. I gently slide my pruner down just above the bud I am about to cut until the bud itself stops further progress, at which point I snip. I know you spoke of dieback, but I have only seen that occur less than 1% of the time. When you leave a stub, it will die off and eventually rot-- a situation that doesn't benefit the tree. As a remedy, if you go back later to snip off those dead stubs, you are then pruning that one branch twice. On my large trees where I have made close to a thousand cuts on one, that is too labor intensive and, I have found, unnecessary, for nothing is gained. The other difference is in the angle at which you make your cut. The greater the angle, the more surface area needs to go through the healing process. On a tree with several hundred cuts, this amounts to a great deal of energy that the tree expends in recovery. While I am cognizant of not leaving a flat surface upon which moisture can cling, most of the branches grow at such an angle that a perpendicular cut is as capable of shedding water as your steeply angled ones. Also it will heal in a year's time. Angled cuts definitely need to be employed if the situation provides no alternative. Pruning techniques widely vary among orchardists. There are some constants, but the purpose of my contribution here is to show that other approaches have also been successfully taken. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and experience.

Gary - thanks for a through description of your pruning methods. After nearly 50 years of pruning the same trees, it's clear you have developed a pruning system that works well for your trees and you. You also make the case that there are variations on basic pruning methods that will produce healthy trees and a lot of good fruit. Here's a video on summer pruning of apple trees. If yer interested, give a look and see how it compares with your summer pruning: kzread.info/dash/bejne/a52jqcWlZ8qul8Y.html Thanks for your comments and here's wishing you continued success with your orchard!

Apple fruit buds can produce fruit for 8-10 years, peaches for only 1 year, this requiring a very different pruning approach. I have noticed that phenomenon but didn't realize the reasoning that such a cut stopped the growth of the branch of 2 year old wood. Per your lesson at the 15:35 I understand what I observed

Great discription. Great knowledge. Thank you for sharing. I will keep watching your great work. My Apple tree will be happy again next years. 😁😊. Greeting from Europe.
