This pruning a peach tree video forms part of a series of peach tree pruning where I share my annual winter and summer pruning of this specific peach tree so that you can see how the tree progresses and how the cuts you make impact the overall shape and performance of the tree. Getting the foundations, or primary branch structure, is really important in pruning peach trees and other stone fruit. The primary branch structure creates the strength and structure a tree needs to support large crops of fruit and getting this step wrong can result in branches breaking or reduced fruit production.
The 2nd year of pruning a peach tree focusses on cleaning up unwanted growth from the past summer growing season to maintain the shape we are working to achieve. We also want to be focussing on energy distribution and the placement of secondary branches that will support more fruit. The secondary branches will need to be cleaned up and summer pruned in the following summer to make sure unwanted growth is removed and only branches that are needed are kept.
I will be doing follow up videos on how to prune a peach tree and more specifically on how to prune a peach tree in South Africa to provide local and relevant video content.

I appreciate you talking about the timing of pruning because that is always a confusing thing with stone fruit trees. I saw a video of someone saying never prune stone fruit in winter and I'm glad you clarified some of that

It's the greatest of pleasure and I'm so glad you found this video too and that it helped you out! Yes, there can be information overload on the Internet with so many different opinions. Just remember you get summer and winter pruning of stone fruit. Winter pruning is for structure and the removal of dead or diseased branches and summer pruning is to direct growth where you want growth and to stimulate fruit growth the flowing year. Awesome tips. My favorite way to prune fruit trees is to cut them down to about knee height when first planting then work from there.

Thanks so much! Yeah I also prefer that option and if I had more space I would 100% be doing that too, but because I need to use my space really carefully I need to raise the height of the first branches. This allows me to plant crops underneath and also be able to walk underneath as the branches protrude into the pathways 🌻
