A friend has an XLT SR and lives 20 miles south of Charlotte, NC. The week of Thanksgiving he drove 78 miles from his house at 29° and used 80% of his battery. Going from 230 miles of range to ~100 doesn't cut it for most.

My F150 4wd with a 5.0 Coyote engine averaged 22 mpg in the eco mode on a 1400 mile trip last winter 760 mile range on a full tank. Ice ice baby.

My 76 Chevy pickup with a cammed 454, headers, 750 demon carb, and manual transmission got 16 at 70 mph (3.23 rear gear) 40 years later it's only up by 6? All that tech, all those years of "improvement"? And that's all ya get? Maybe it's because my full size truck is smaller than today's economy trucks. They have only convinced you it's better and sold you the same shit

@Donald Leider, that sounds like a sensible plan! I've already seen "Hoovie" do a video in cold weather using the Lightning he had for a short time. He towed an empty trailer and then the trailer loaded with his small classic car. IIRC the small car weighed maybe 1,500 lbs and the trailer may have been about 1,100 lbs. I want to say he lost around 50%+ of range as a result. I've also seen a video where "new charging stations" were built and it was cold/snowing and suddenly people couldn't even charge because the stations were malfunctioning. This guy said he turned on the heat ~5mins before leaving so it'd be like remote starting but Id like to see more testing on this, which clearly the heater was soaking up the juice... So I wonder how much range would drop with an electric vehicle's heater system heating the interior to a comfy temp in various outside temperatures and the amount of time it takes to achieve the desired temp, comparative to an average combustion engine vehicle of comparable size. I mean some of us recently saw negative double digit temps when we got up in the morning to go out... Also how much is the range reduced by running the AC on hot summer days to get the car cooled down from the sometimes 180°+ interior temps... The fact is, these all-electrics are still NOT practical and they're hardly "saving da planiiit!!" when they're utilizing power for charging which is still largely generated from the consumption of fossil fuels. Can't forget the toxic lithium for the batteries & the high sale prices, gov't subsidies to lower that cost and then insurance/tax which likely are still very high but I imagine they offer subsidies as incentives for people to buy them all at net-contributing taxpayer/subscriber expense. We also have to consider that before the winter cold hit, California was pushing it's "ALL-ELECTRIC!!" agenda but then quickly told consumers, "PLEASE DON'T CHARGE YOUR CARS NOW!! THE POWER GRID IS OVERLOADED FROM THE HEATWAVE!!" And how do they "think" this will "improve" with shutting down more coal/natural gas power plants WHILST simultaneously "DUMPING COMBUSTION ENGINE VEHICLES AND PUTTING ALL-ELECTRIC VEHICLES ON THE ROADS!!" and thereby needing to tax the power grid even more. It's a $$$ racket because we see these same "activists" still utilizing the climate control systems in their palatial palaces and places of business, being chauffeured in their combustion engine motorcades, taking flights on air-polluting private jets to travel THOUSANDS of miles to "receive an environmental conservation award"... Absolutely hypocritical.

And lots of places, especially in the northern states and Canada, can see temperatures SIXTY DEGREES COLDER THAN THIS... There is SO much about this tech that's not ready for the mainstream, yet!

I park outside and the last couple of days it’s been -20F. It’s been bad enough I actually had to put my regular car batteries on trickle chargers. I know I don’t live where most people live, but I feel like the technology is still very far away from banning gas powered vehicles.

Think your right, the way you do it if the time comes is but a new vehicle, and get grandfathered in if you will, before the ban of gasoline cars and trucks happens because someday it will. My new 22 Tacoma sr 4x4 will probably outlive me, I hope we don't see the day that you will be forced to buy something you don't want EVs are for the birds! Peace.....

Right onto the backs of combustion engine powered tow trucks like many of them are now due to people not planning trips properly as well as unexpected weather events and power station charging issues. Guys we know that politicians and their elitist criminal cohorts are trying to exert even more control over the populous but all of this is absolute nonsense. It's not to be ignored because they are control freaks with an agenda but it's up to "WE THE PEOPLE" to fight back & it starts with elections of local to fed reps. As for combustion engines, there are still such engines powering flight as well as sea faring vessels and I'm pretty sure that the Presidential motorcade of one Joe Bribery is NOT "all-electric now". The upscale models come with a ICE vehicle to pull it

Any type of vehicle is effected by colder temperatures, gas, diesel or electric. My diesel truck warms up slowly but once warm it holds the heat due to a front cover. I preheat the engine with a block heater in my garage. I have seen the rats nest of plumbing in the Lightning and it scares me. Good luck with your truck.

We had a -50C windchill last night here in Canada, I wonder how much range and power it would lose at these temperatures?

Wind chill doesn't affect the temperature of objects. In other words, the object won't get any colder than the actual temperature.

My ICE worked without fault, ran for over 40 hours without stopping, thanks to work issues with the cold (even when the power went out for hours) .... But seriously, we do have real weather issues, that need to be considered. Running out of energy in the middle of the prairies at -40 (with 60km/h winds), is not tenable.

It's planning, I travel between Regina and Saskatoon, charging station 1/2 between, I have a ER Lightning , and in non -20 or lower weather, I get to my destination using~60% charge doing avg 120km/hr. Now in the winter deep freeze, anything at-20 or lower, I lose around 40% range, heat is a big draw. I'm not disappointed or anything, I knew the trade off, I had a 2015 platinum new, and in under 7 years I put on over 330k on it, in 2016 I spent over $17k in fuel. For me a EV was about saving $$ , period. And I have, 10mons later, I've spent just under 2300 on charging stations and at home, and I just rolled over 21,000 km. I still have a 2020 Jag FPace ICE though, just incase

We ordered three standard range Lightnings for work which should be here in March. This is good information. My estimates were that we'd get about 1/2 the stated range in the winter but the loss of indicated power is something I hadn't considered so thanks for providing that information.

The real question is what is the replacement cost for a new battery when the time comes.

we are on rolling electric blackouts currently due to the brutal winter blast here in tn. This doesnt look good for electric vehicles as the grid cant even handle people running their heat. Its the same with ac in summer.

I want to know how much real cold affects an EV. -15 is a typical winter morning around here. -20 is not uncommon and most winters have a couple -30 mornings.

These are toys for the city crowd that does not haul loads or do any blue collar work. Here in the real world of building, bad roads , trailer hauling, firewood collecting, long distances between jobs and cold weather this type of vehicle wouldn't even come in second place to my 2006 ford with 200k miles. When people really wise up to the limitations of these battery packs and the the cost to replace when they're used up they will want the gas burner back regardless of age.

Tow 5,000 lbs at -20 F. temps, you're looking at about 1/5 or less of shown miles from all the vids I've seen. So, charge showing 200 miles, you'll get around 25-40 miles.

What happens to the range on this vehicle if you run the heat in the winter? AAA suggest it cuts it in half.

Hi Sev. I also have an XLT SR. Last month in November I got an average of about 2.1 miles per KWh with temperatures in the 30’s and 40’s Fahrenheit. Like you, I used the heater minimally. I predict I’ll probably be getting about 1.6 to 1.8 miles per kWh when temperatures drop in the teens. So far, for the last 2 1/2 months, I’ve been averaging about 2.4 miles per kWh doing mostly city driving.

Im getting my XLT SR soon. Super pumped. Im in Seattle, winter is not as harsh but definitely keeping an eye on this series. My truck was a mannequin, got it MSRP though. Cant complain but My dealer drilled the bumper on my truck too! Did you fix those holes or just leave them be? Debating leaving the license plate or fixing the holes for a cleaner look.

The main benefit of an ev is home charging. I'm not sure why you would get any truck ev without that,? charging is 5x the cost alone if you can't home charge. I'm in Canada and it's -25c here. The lightning is parked outside with 240v and with precondition timed departures it has 100% power. Yes the range is 45% less at these Temps. With no camping etc in winter I can live with it.

Your F-150 Lightning office Rocks!! Seriously blown away by it. Nice to know about the difference with cold weather. I’m planning semi cold weather trip in Jan and trying to make a round trip in an ER for about 200 miles. Will have to see the temps when time gets here. Great content!

@@markpace9400 I go round trip (250 miles) to my office and back at a 4K elevation where I keep my Lightning garaged. I’m bringing it home to Lake Tahoe today and keeping it here not garaged and that will be a different test of the cold at 6200k. I’ll report back here. At the moment it’s showing 91% @ 208 miles at 4K in a very cold garage.

Cold weather turns it into the Ford F150 Static

Back in the 70's when my younger brother was in his late teens, he drove a VW Bug. In the winter he froze until he put a kerosene space heater on the passenger floorboard....

I think there will be a lot of changes in the auto market in the next 5 years so I'll stick with what I've got until it all shakes out. An EV today will probably be close to obsolete in 5 years.

3 years is more accurate. also, buying a used EV that is already obsolete is just insane, the trade -in value will be terrible.

This was a solid explanation; you hit all the main points and get high marks for accuracy! Can you repeat for the people with an L2 at home that pre-heat their batteries? Bonus points if you can sum up what that added to the electrical consumption.

I’m highly considering an F-150 Lightning but will be moving to a colder climate about the time I buy my next truck. So this series is right on time for me. Thank you for putting yourself through this so we can make more informed decisions.

ALL EV have this issues very easy fix. keep it plugged in at night to the charger and set a departure time in the app so it pre condition the battery before you need to leave and also get the cabin warmed up for you, My 22 Tesla Model X Plaid as the same issue. New EV owners are blowing this way out of control.. Just all need to work together and Educate people

I am interested in the full winter experience of this SPECIFIC vehicle when nightly charging is not always an option, since my SPECIFIC use cases would commonly necessitate driving after no charge nights. I am well aware of the effects cold has on modern batteries and their power storage/power delivery. But how this SPECIFIC vehicle preforms under the conditions he’s putting it through will go a large way to informing me if it fits MY needs in a PICKUP. If it can’t meet certain thresholds under these conditions, it won’t do me much good. If it can, it becomes a very viable option for me. Please save your “education” for someone that’s asking to receive it next time.

@@MxRelli Not sure what time frame we are looking at, but if you are buying your next truck in three or more years from now, might be worth considering a Tesla Cybertruck with more range, more power, way faster charging on a far superior charging system, more towing, higher max load, better efficiency and better heating and cooling systems...and it will never rust and keeps your safe from stray bullets. You would want to make a reservation now...

Thanks for sharing your video. I read through a number of comments and although EV may be the future, the simple cost and time to replace the ICE fleet will take years, plus I expect that people will choose to hold on to their ICE vehicles longer. Much work to be done on the infrastructure. Fossil fuels will be with us for a long time, simply because if nothing else, they are needed to create all the "free fuel". Solar is a long way away as a primary source and wind is limited to certain markets. And the lead time for nuclear puts it in the future. I expect that these govt mandates to prohibit ICE sales will be interesting to watch as we get closer to the actual effective date. I want to invest in an ICE dealership just across the state line from California. Bottom line is that its not just a one size fits all solution. The other day I was not driving so I starting looking for EV vehicles as we drove around town. I spotted 2 in an hour of driving. Not going to happen anytime soon in GA and fortunately we don't plan on moving to the Left Coast.

I live in Maine and I have the standard range battery as well. I do not have a garage and I do not charge at home. I am curious to see how it goes this winter.

So you probably drink Slurpee when it’s 19 degrees but we will find out how the truck does this winter differently than most people. 😁 I cut this part out to make this video short, but the starting operating temperature of the charger is -22 F. The vehicle battery was also tested at -40 F. We should be ok.

I'm certain I wouldn't have purchased my lightning platinum or any all electric vehicle if I couldn't charge at home. I just don't believe it would be worth it, if I had to pay $.31 to $.43 per kwh. Currently I pay $.075/kwh in winter & $.12/kwh summer. With avg 1.7/mpk that's $.044/mile winter & avg 2/mpk that's $.06/mile summer. I normally don't compare this to gas prices, just how much I'm paying per mile. For nearly a 7000 lb vehicle these are low operating costs, not even considering the little to no maintenance that's required.

I decided to get the truck because I get free charging at work. I live 40 miles from work and I go in 5 days a week. Currently I only charge there. I have the option to charge at home if I need to, I just have not needed to yet. For my situation it seemed like a good idea to get the truck.

Great video. I'm a little concerned with the fact that the Lightning loses so little battery in cold weather. You'd think that it losing almost no battery % overnight would be a good thing, but there should be some if the vehicle is keeping the battery at a good temperature. Hopefully Ford has a lot of data on this and the BMS is programmed to keep the battery healthy.

Thank you for these videos. I bought a mach e select sr for the following reasons; 1 it was available and 2 to see if I could get by with the smaller battery since the price increases with the lightning. I too lost range during the winter months however I am able to condition the battery since I charge at home. After a year and a half wait it looks like my lightning will be here any day now. My experience with the select allowed me the confidence to order the sr battery even with the temps here in Delaware.

Good video as always! Keep it up. Giving up on my Lightning dream....dealership and Ford Canada can't get their stories straight. But might have a different ev tomorrow...

Good job of saying many wont have this issue, because they can pre prep the truck, BUT some people cant pre prep.

Winter conditions? What about your towing range or carrying heavy loads?

I'm nor an EV fan by any stretch of the imagination,but this is a really good practical review ,your premise to test over the winter in real life time conditions should be good/interesting. Will follow your progress.

I have my SR range Lariat and I noticed a significant drop in range since it really cooled down here in northern CA. I still need to tinker with have the truck plugged in and using the comfort settings to help with the range loss in the winter.

@@EVTruckLOG When spring comes your truck will be fine. Just keep the battery between 5% and 90%, or better between 10% and 80%. I think most manufacturers build in enough buffer that you won't see degradation affect your range for many years, but if you avoid charging to 100% very often it will be good even longer. I charged my Fiat to 100% every day because it only had 85 mile total range, but it could still do that after 5 years. In the summer it could even go 100 miles, but in winter it was closer to 70. My Tesla is nearly 8 years old and has only lost 6 miles of range and I only charge above 80% 3-4 times a year. It seems like winter affects the Lightning more than my Tesla, but it's just bigger and heavier. My XLT SR will be built in January

How’s the truck holding any new updates?

I bought a Jeep rubicon 4XE just for this reason. It still has a gas engine and I guess that in itself is a piece of mind. With the hybrid system I average just about 33 mpg in the summer and roughly 28.5 in the winter (in Maine). My commute to work is 82 miles round trip. If they had a charging station at work my MGP would be so much higher. I think we are heading in the right direction but still a few years away to solve the EV millage range issue.... Great video about the Lightning, almost bought one but went with my 2022 Jeep 4XE instead.....

So, as long as you live in a warm climate, dont tow things, and can charge at home, an EV should be ok. But, if you live where it gets and stays well below freezing, you cant charge at home, you want the heater on so you dont freeze to death and you can see out of the windows, or is you need to tow, stay away from EVs. Also, with EV batteries being underneath the vehicles, what protects them from road salt in winter? Dont they corrode? I like your videos btw

All interesting information. The next question is what happens if you are on the freeway and there is a collision or something else that creates total closure of the highway? You could be stuck for hours. Could get dangerous

@SEVLOG I am greatly enjoying mine! Luckily i only have a short commute so the range reduction from the guess-o-meter (about 25%) isn't too bad for my situation in North Central Illinois.

I live in Massachusetts. I see like negative 8 degrees Fahrenheit so I don't think I should get an EV. There are very little charging stations around and I can't afford an EV anyway. When I was 17 years old it hit 40 below zero.

In Canada not using the heater isn’t an option

My F350 6.7 starts right up with no problems.

19 degs is Warm. This coming Friday. The High temp in Mpls, Mn. will be Neg -6 below Zero.

Thanks for the video....clearly you are having fun figuring all this out. Once that novelty wears off however all these roadblocks may become a huge pain in the rear. I have 2 vehicles...a tiny VW Beetle to buzz around town and it barely sips gasoline. When it finally dies ...it is now over 20 years old...I would consider a small cheap used EV to replace it. The 2nd vehicle is an 04 F150....it guzzles gas so I only drive it when needed sometimes it sits a week or 2 at a time. It been insanely cold in Canada the past week and the F150 is sat in front of my house all week. I can say with certainty if I need somemore drywall ( huge reno on going reno on my house ) I can jump in it and just go. Thats what I want...toooo many other things for my 71yr old brain to worry about than my truk stranding me in the middle of the road. Despite what all the current narratives pushed at us I believe this is all most owners want....for me life is too short to over complicate things.

When it finally dies? Yank engine, rebuild it. Done, last another 20 years. I have 3 cars, 20, 30 and 50 years old. All still going fine, mechanically perfect. Rebuilt the 30 year recently for 4 grand bumper to bumper, good for another 30. Ice cars last literally forever.

They should have put a heat pump in. Heater in mine uses 6k to 3k watts until the heat pump takes over, then it uses like 1k.

I'm in the Nova area myself. To drive 11 miles for a gym is crazy, lol. Seems like almost every strip mall has one.

With the reduction of power, you would think that they would also have limited towing rating??? I wonder if this is ever taking into consideration. You cannot tell me that you’re safely able to tell maximum payload with 80% reduction of power when you need to overtake or accelerate to get onto an on ramp.

So the display says that 30% of the power used on your drive went to the climate control system (heat). You had a relatively short drive, and in that time it had to heat your cabin from freezing to comfort. If you had driven longer, that initial heat up would have been a much smaller percentage of your total power consumption. Once up to temp it likely won't use very much power to maintain. Analyzing this level of information takes a little getting used to.

Have you ever noticed that the battery and engine temp gauges ALWAYS show the same values ? I doubt they are working

It would be interesting to see how the truck handles at -40 F it gets so very cold in Minnesota

It probably wouldn't. No substitute for gasoline engines, I am in my early fifty's so hopefully I'll never be forced to buy a EV, don't want one. peace.....

Have you ever done a cost per mile based on price per kWh and price per gallon of gas . I think it could boil down to how far can you get with $40 with an EV F150 , vs an ICE F150 vehicle

98kwh is not big enough for a truck that big, especially in the cold. also power output limitation is interesting, ive been in -15C in my model 3, parked overnight not plugged in, and within 10 minutes of driving i had access to full power.

Idk about fords app but with tesla you can “precondition” car which also preheats the battery 🔋 for max power when it’s plugged in . Also Technically you can get the power back by driving very hard & fast for like 15 min. Will heat battery quickly.

Yes, Ford has preconditioning available if plugged in. Not sure how long is needed for best battery temperature at various outside temperatures.

They never comment on how much range they loose with running heat in winter or A/C in 1000 degree day

This is very much a truck for people who want a truck to commute and take the family around 99.9% of the time. That's not an insult. People who don't need to tow giant loads ever and just want the convenience of a pickup bed but can't drop $90k+ on a Rivian, this is your only EV option right now. And I think it's a good one so long as you are honest with yourself and how you plan to use it. PS you are a brave soul for buying this thing without any form of charging at home.

Very well said! I think Ford marketing hyped up this truck for towing too much. Haha yes, I love experimenting with different tech and being able to share that experience. Otherwise this vehicle would have been no go for me... LOL

No, Ford didn’t hyper this Truck up for towing. The problem is people buying these things have never experienced any other EV. But the OP is correct this is a family hauler and commuter. While the Rivian would be ideal, it doesn’t have the interior space like the Lightning. Either way good luck and you might want to look into getting rid of it for a better towing vehicle like a Hummer or Rivian.

@@lrod8692 how did you get too range no one mentioned that, we were talking about towing which was the point of fords marketing to show how well it could pull a load it's an ad for the lightning's towing capabilities, they have a heap of ads promoting it's towing capabilities the train ad was just the first

From one degree to -10 is a pretty big difference when it comes to starting diesels one degree not bad but 5 to 10 below really tough

@@nathanbrumbaugh8545 yea. I’m glad I don’t live where it’s like that. It’s normally lows of 25 dipping into the teens here a few times. Hardly ever single digits.

If it’s anything like the electric service cart at work it doesn’t like the cold much. That’s why batteries are for golf carts and NOT for trucks.

Nice honest info thank you But you are just reinforcing how useless EVs are if: you live in cold climates, cant charge at your home, live in rural areas, need to haul stuff. I will stick w my tacoma. It starts in -40 degree windchill, i can have the heat blasting, music on, and get gas in a few minutes time.

I’ve been driving EVs in Canada since 2011 and over 500,000 kms, they do great in winter in most day to day cases. Saw a Lighting in PEI over the summer on our Ottawa-PEI roadtrip.

@SE I can’t wait to get my XLT SR. My build week is 12/19. Unless it gets delayed (fingers crossed it doesn’t). I work and do all of my running around is within 10 miles. By and large. About 20 miles a day. So I’m not worried about my range but I want to test it out at some point. I got the same XLT except I added the step (because it’s not always the easiest to jump up on the tailgate) and the 9.6 so I can use it to power my house in an emergency. There’s a workaround if you don’t have the multi thousand dollar Sunrun/power wall garbage.

@@JimPoole nice! For those cold days when you can still feel your face, heated seat should help a lot. Apparently Lightning resistive heater from HVAC is not very efficient. I try to answer most of the comments if I just uploaded a video. Hey thanks for watching!

Too hot: shuts off or is ruined Too cold: shuts off; won't come on until warmed up

Turn the heater on, and how fast will the battery drain. Throw in the defrost! Don’t use the radio to save juice!

This makes me even happier I bought a 2022 F-150 STX with the 5.0 instead of a Lightning.
