Winter Hammock Camping on the Appalachian Trail - Port Clinton, PA

Join me for 2 days of Winter Hammock Camping, Backpacking, & Camp cooking as we hike a portion of the Appalachian Trail near Port Clinton, PA. www.sintax77.com
For this winter camping adventure, I’ll be taking advantage of a couple of free days by heading up to Port Clinton, Pennsylvania for a spur of the moment solo backpacking trip. Along the way, we’ll see some sections of the Appalachian Trail that PA has to offer, go over my winter backpacking gear, setup a winter hammock camping rig, build a campfire, and do a a decent amount of camp cooking on my trusty, old-school canister stove.
Trailhead Parking: Appalachian Trailhead, Port Clinton, Pennsylvania, Rt 61
Note: Parking at the actual trailhead is no longer allowed / possible. I parked in the town of Port Clinton near the Fire Station and proceeded down Penn St to the dead end (GPS coords 40.5797448,-76.0249347). This small detour allows you to hike directly under the highway bridge and link up with the Appalachian Trail on the other side.
For an easier read, check out my full blog post here: www.sintax77.com/winter-hammoc...
GPS Data for this trip is available on my website's Trip Data Page, or on the blog post linked above.
This was a relatively simple ‘in and out’ hike with a total one way distance of just under 3 miles and an elevation gain of 1,284′.

Remember when the food and pan is hot it'll continue to cook when taken off the stove. You should definitely use a top for the pan. You'll save so much fuel using one!!

I have used my Bahco Laplander saw for several years. It has been reliable on camping outings and NCT trail maintenance efforts. It is a good value. I bought my dad one for Christmas this past year as he needed a new hand saw for hunting. I purchased a leather belt holster to keep it this saw more available while performing trail maintenance.

if you want a good value saw, go for the corona saw. but if you want the best folding, and fixed blade saws, go with a Silky saw. They are without a doubt the best...... really missed your videos. glad your getting out there, braving the cold, and bringing us some much needed entertainment. cant wait for the next one.

Bro, this is crazy haha! I grew up in Phoenix and have lived in Florida for years. I live as close to the Equator as possible. The temperatures you talk about are insane to me! -20? "Oh, it's not cold, it's in the low 30's." What? Bro, I put on winter gear in the low 70's, no joke. I realize it's probably a blood thickness thing seeing as I have lived near the Sun my entire life. Crazy. Thanks for sharing!

I live close by to that section. I HATE that they closed off parking at the trail. 🤬 That hill kicks your butt no matter what shape you’re in. 😁 There was a dividing Rock before you went up the big rocks (to the left)...the trail heads down some steps . My photo on YT is from me at the first lookout. 🥾🏔 Great video!

I just got the Vecto CNOC Container for my 2018 AT Thru. I really think I am going to like the open mouth on it. It does weight 2.6 oz. which is more than my Evernew, but I like that is rolls up tighter/smaller than other bladders. Thanks for showing this and hiking this section of the AT.

Gomboy is a Silky model ... very good folding saw, although the F180 is a bit smaller (about the size of the coleman). The thing to remember is a Silky cuts on the "pull" stroke. Lots of KZread videos on the Silky variations.

Bahco Laplander is a pretty sweet saw. I had a Corona and liked it but the teeth stay somewhat exposed when closed. Not really too dangerous but gear could get caught in the teeth if your not careful. Silky makes some of the best saws I hear. Thanks for the video and for living it up for the rest of us.

At the base of a tree, the ground is warmer than the surrounding air. If you flip your bottle of water over so it is upside down at the base of tree, it will reduce the probability of it freezing. If it does freeze, since the water will freeze from the top down, it is more likely you will be able to remove the lid in the morning.

Silky makes the gomboy. It's a good saw. Silky saws only cut on the pull but they are fantastic saws. I own 2. The pocket boy and big boy. both will cut through hard and softwood like butter. Gomboy is the middle size of those two. They all perform the same just different sizes. They are super aggressive and come in different tooth sizes.

I have the Coghlan, Corona and a Gorilla folding saws...go with the Corona. It's a larger tool but it is an excellent saw, strong handle and the blade works the best of my three. Keep a small can of WD40 to keep it lubed which lessens the friction of the sawing action. My best bushcraft saw is a collapsible Sven...awesome tool but I have to carry it in an arrow quiver mounted on the outside of my pack. An 18" axe complements the wood processing tool set.

for your uses I would go with the Bacho Laplander. Cheap good saw that will work well for most of the stuff you will be doing. Now if you want to step up to a nice saw for winter when collecting more wood, like dead standing, and you want something more substantial I would get the boreal 21. The Boreal would also make a great gift for Mike as a Christmas present too. He would love that saw!

Get the fire wood furthest from your fire site first. Then work your way in towards the fire through the evening and night. Oh a little sriracha and you'd be golden lol.

Hey Sintax. Great vid as always. You said you had a 2016 edition of AWOL's guide? Check page 115 on the right. It's been awhile since I have been to PA so perhaps the regs have changed for the PA State Game Lands. The regs were the same IIRC when I was there in 2014 and I think have largely been the same for some time. One night wild camping legit within 200' of the AT (the "corridor") & 500' from water sources, trailheads, road crossings & official parking areas. Interestingly there is that notation that you have to start and end in different places. Oops? ;) Keep up the good work!

Hey, I may have missed this comment previously, but I’m curious do you like your chameleon more than your Darien? I was completely sold on the Darien then I noticed you’ve been sticking with Dutch for the last bunch of trips would love to hear your thoughts! P.S. your videos are a great way for a dad of 3 under 3 to stem the hiker stir craze!

Dude. At about 1:00:00, the fire is reflecting against something to your left, and it looks like a pair of eyes watching you eat. lol God that's creepy. Awesome video, as always! Regarding saws, I have a SOG that I've been carrying for about a year, and it works wonders. Fairly certain that it was in the $20ish range. 10/10 would recommend.

I had to stay up tonight to see the alleged critter eyes around the camp fire. I expected it to be a racoon, but the eyes were pretty far apart for a racoon.

What happens when you invert your MSR canister stove right after the burner is lit? On my Kovea, I invert right away after the initial ignition, so I do not use up the propane in the canister.

Hey man love the videos. Just a quick question. I'm fairly new to hammock camping and i was wondering if you could recommend any good inexpensive under and top quilts? i really dont want to spend more than about $250 for the whole system. I've been using my sleeping pad and my sleeping bag and i figured its time for an upgrade. I really look forward to hopefully hearing from you. Thanks, SEAN

There are some synthetic brands out there, but if you're budget is $250, I would highly recommend checking out Hammock Gear's new Econ line. The Phoenix 30° UQ is $99, and the Burrow 30° is $138. Boom, full set of real down quilts for under $240. www.hammockgear.com/econ-quilts/
