Winter Camping with a Sled

For this Backpacking Trip, we use a Pulk Sled to go Winter Camping in the deep snow of the White Mountains. GPS Data at www.sintax77.com
Mike and I originally planned to do a long overdue return trip to Mt
Crawford for some winter backpacking and camping, but as is usually the case, the notorious weather of the White Mountains thwarted our efforts...
For an easier read, check out my blog post and full trip report here:
www.sintax77.co...
...With a higher summits forecast from the White Mountains Observatory calling for -60° wind chills due subzero temps combined with high winds and gusts upwards of 90 MPH, we opted to stick to the lower elevations instead. So we shelved our higher elevation idea to camp on Mt Crawford, and instead started scouting for a new location on the fly.
Basically, we were winging it in terms of trip planning, but fortunately I was armed with a full set of White Mountains AMC maps to keep up safely prepared on whatever trail we ended up cast upon by the winter hiking gods.
In the video we do some snow campsite selection and setup, tons of firewood collection, snow furniture building, campfire cooking, trail sledding on the rather steep Airline Trail, and overall just plain having a fun time out in the snowy woods of New Hampshire for a few days.
Time of Year: Mid February
Parking Location
Appalachia Trailhead Parking Lot
44°22’17.6″N 71°17’19.9″W
Trailhead
Appalachia Trailhead on Presidential Hwy (Hwy 2), Randolph, NH
Trails Used, Day One
Valley Way Trail
Randolph Path
Airline Trail
Setup Camp near Airline Trail
Our campsite was located in the middle of the triangle formed for the Airline, Randolph Path, and Valley Way Trails. We used this campsite with significant snow pack on the ground so leveling out a decent platform for a tent was no problem.
Based on my experience in this general area on previous summer trips, I would assume it would not make a very accommodating tentsite without snow, due to the steep and rugged terrain.
Day 1 Mileage: 2 miles
Day 1 Elevation Gain: 1,122′
Trails Used, Day Two
Airline Trail
Return to vehicle at Appalachia Trailhead Parking Lot
Day 1 Mileage: 1 mile
Day 1 Elevation Gain: 6′ (pretty brutal, I know)

One of my favorites. You all looked like you were having fun and were so much more relaxed than usual despite the cold. Loved the second childhood moments with the sled. I know Mike needed it. He really seemed more relaxed than usual. Good times, guys. Maybe should do it more often.

Hey Sintax, I have been watching your videos for about half a year, and they have totally inspired me and my husband! We both decided we were going to give backpacking a try. We started with day hikes, and we have been slowly increasing our mileage. We started carrying heavier and heavier packs, and we are officially going on our first real backpacking trip this weekend! Thanks for putting in all the hard work!

Thanks guys for the great video. Watching Mike sledding was so funny I kept watching it over and over. Great beer selection also. And who doesn't love a good steak. Mike congrats on your expanded family. You are a great dad that I'm sure your kids look up to. So good to see you guys together out on the trail. Great friends are a gift from god. Take care both of you and hope to see you soon. Peace.

Too old and decrepid to mount a pack and head out anymore. As a young man I used to head to the white Mountains all the time. Fall and winter were the best time, no bugs and no worry of food spoiling for lack of rerigeration, fresh meat in particular. I now enjoy tagging along on your NH adventures.

That tubing is tap lines for collecting Maple Sap for making Maple Syrup. Its common place to take the taps out of the trees after the season in the spring. They might be left over from the last season or new taps for the up coming season.

Beer and steaks in the Whites made for a perfect winter trip. We had a very strange winter in Northern Michigan. The temperatures stayed above average most of the time and we had rain in January for the first time that I can remember. Lake Superior never froze!! Two years ago it was almost 100% ice. Bailing from the Michigan plan for the Whites was a good idea for this year. Bob

Enjoyed the video, and what I learned about tapping Maple trees. With pulling a Pulk sled up the side of a mountain, you both might find the info on a "Z Drag Recovery Rope System" useful. Believe it or not, those are the same sleds we used on the Denali expedition, so you are legit! But we used massive duffle bags instead of plastic tubs and sweet custom harness system with suspension.

That's pretty cool to know. I'll have to let Mike know that he did a nice job after all, haha. I like that duffel bag idea too. That sounds decent.

Yea the first time I came across tubing like that, I thought someone had left a bunch of trash in the woods. It years years later I learned it was for tapping the trees.

If you bury your beer under 2' of snow, they snow will insulate it and keep it cold but it won't freeze.
